At the Buzzer: Indiana 101, Milwaukee 70
Quick thoughts on a 101-70 win against Milwaukee:
How it happened
Indiana’s offense continued its early-season onslaught in the first half of Wednesday’s game against Horizon League favorite Milwaukee. The Hoosiers shot a sizzling 60 percent from the field, including a 9-for-14 mark on 3-pointers and put 51 points on the board. Indiana assisted on 14 of its 18 made field goals. Three Hoosiers hit double figures as Lamar Wilkerson had 15 points, Reed Bailey had 12 and Tayton Conerway had 11. IU posted an impressive 1.44 points per possession in the opening 20 minutes.
Defense, however, was an issue. IU struggled to stop dribble penetration and allowed the Panthers, an opportunistic group on the offensive glass, to rebound 42 percent of their missed shots. Milwaukee, to its credit, also made some tough shots. The Hoosiers, who led by as many as 15 points, went to the locker room leading 51-39 after scoring the final five points of the first half.
Through the first eight minutes of the second half, Indiana struggled with its shooting. The Hoosiers were just 3-for-9 from the field by the under-12 media timeout, but still led by 15 points due to their ability to get to the line. IU was 8-for-9 from the stripe through the first eight minutes of the second half.
IU’s first made 3-pointer of the second half came at the 10:53 mark from Jasai Miles to push the lead to 17 at 69-52. The lead was extended to 21 at 77-56 on a Tayton Conerway layup with 8:02 remaining. And by the 4:07 mark, the lead had ballooned to 27 points at 87-60 on a beautiful Conerway crossover and drive for a layup. The win, Indiana’s third straight to open the season, was another offensive clinic and a blowout.
Standout performers
Wilkerson led the Hoosiers with 24 points on 7-for-12 shooting, including a 5-for-6 mark on 3s, in 31 minutes. Conerway had 21 points, five rebounds, three assists and a steal in 26 minutes. Bailey added 14 points, five rebounds, five assists and a blocked shot in 26 minutes.
Statistics that stand out
The Hoosiers shot 14-for-28 on 3s, had 23 assists to just seven turnovers and won the points off turnovers battle 24-to-7.
