Trey Galloway ‘taking it all in’ as he competes for NBA Summer League roster spot

Trey Galloway – Indiana basketball’s all-time games played leader – spoke with the media Wednesday afternoon following a workout with the Golden State Warriors. Galloway touched on his progress this offseason, feedback he’s received and his goals for the near future.

Galloway wrapped up his five-year Hoosier career in March as IU fell just short of an NCAA tournament bid and did not participate in a postseason event. The Culver, Indiana, native finished seventh in total assists in program history and is one of seven Hoosiers to record 1,000-plus points and 400-plus assists in a career.

Wednesday, Galloway spoke about how his experience at Indiana will aid his transition into the professional ranks.

“I think just for me, just being able to handle all the pressure that comes with playing at IU is important,” he said. “I think that’s really prepared me for this step, because obviously it’s an even bigger stage… It’s going to continue to help me grow.”

Galloway said his workout with Golden State was his fourth thus far. He said most workouts are similar, moving at a fast pace and teaching concepts and replicating each organization’s play style to get a feel for fit.

At his next stop, Galloway will reunite with a familiar face.

Galloway’s fifth workout will take place with the Sacramento Kings. The organization hired Mike Woodson – who stepped down at this season’s conclusion after four years at the helm in Bloomington – as an associate head coach in May.

“He’s a big impact in my career,” Galloway said. “And obviously, he’s very tapped in with the NBA world, so we’ve talked continuously throughout this process, and he’s just been helping me out. The main thing is for just for me is to really enjoy it and take it all in.”

Woodson isn’t the only IU connection Galloway has kept in contact with throughout his transition to the next level. Galloway mentioned names such as Trayce Jackson-Davis, Miller Kopp and Race Thompson as guys who have provided guidance, the common piece of advice being to enjoy the process.

Galloway said each workout has been good, as has the following feedback.

“The continuous feedback I’ve gotten is just being able to continue to shoot the ball well and be able to be a guy that can guard at a high level and play off the ball in many ways,” he said. “I heard a lot from teams, just being able to play certain roles that’s needed.”

Galloway acknowledged Indianapolis trainer Jason Smeathers, who he’s worked with one-on-one this summer. Smeathers, a former IU Indy player, has previously trained players such as Trayce Jackson-Davis, Gordon Hayward and Kelly Olynyk.

Galloway failed to receive an invite to participate in either the NBA Combine nor the G League Elite Camp, both of which took place in mid-May.

“I knew about those invites and, I mean, it is what it is,” he said. “All I can worry about is myself and continue to get better and put myself in position to (reach) my goal, which is to make a Summer League roster and to compete.”

With virtually no chance of being drafted on June 25, the 2025 NBA Summer League takes place from July 10-20 and Galloway hopes to earn a roster spot. Galloway could work towards a draft bid in the G League Draft, which takes place in the fall.
