How it happened

In its first game after a trip to the West Coast, Indiana struggled offensively in the first half against Ohio State. The Hoosiers shot 9-for-29 from the field and 1-for-9 on 3s and managed just .83 points per possession. Trey Galloway hit a few key floaters and led IU with seven first-half points. Offensive rebounding was a key for Indiana in the opening half. The Hoosiers grabbed nine offensive boards and scored eight second-chance points, which kept them within striking distance. Ohio State led by as many as nine at 26-17, but went scoreless over the final 2:21 as the Hoosiers closed the half on an 8-3 run to get within four at 29-25 at the break.

Out of the break, Luke Goode nailed a 3-pointer to get the Hoosiers within one, but the Buckeyes answered with five straight points to push the lead to six. A pair of free throws by Mackenzie Mgbako brought IU within four at 36-32 ahead of the under-16 media timeout. The Buckeyes stretched the lead to nine at 43-34 by the 13:11 mark, forcing Mike Woodson to take a timeout. After Ohio State opened a 10-point lead at 46-36, the Hoosiers scored five straight to make it 46-41 with 11:10 left, forcing a Buckeye timeout.

A flagrant one foul on John Mobley gave Anthony Leal a pair of free throws, which brought IU within two at 49-47 and a pair of free throws by Luke Goode tied the game at 49. The Hoosiers regained the lead at 51-50 on two free throws from Malik Reneau with 7:06 left. But the Buckeyes answered with the next six points to make it 56-51 with five minutes remaining. Trey Galloway’s 3-pointer brought IU within two at 56-54 with 4:27 left and Micah Parrish turned it over on OSU’s next possession ahead of the under-four media timeout.

The last four minutes were all Indiana. The Hoosiers tightened up defensively and Trey Galloway’s clutch 3-pointer with 1:24 left pushed the lead to five at 61-56. After the Buckeyes failed to convert on their next possession, the Buckeyes fouled Luke Goode, who made both free throws to give IU a 63-56 advantage. Ohio State got no closer than five the rest of the way as IU picked up its 19th win and finished Big Ten play 10-10.

Galloway and Reneau scored 16 points apiece to lead Indiana and Goode added 11, including an 8-for-10 performance from the free throw line.
