Quick thoughts on a 74-57 loss to Iowa:

How it happened

It was an ugly start on Saturday for Indiana at Assembly Hall against Iowa. With students back in town and decent juice in the building for an early afternoon tip, the Hoosiers fell flat defensively. The Hawkeyes took the lead early, led by Bennett Stirtz and Tavion Banks. Stirtz, an All-American candidate, controlled the game from the backcourt with 14 points and five assists in the opening 20 minutes. By halftime, the Hoosiers had given up 1.28 points per possession and trailed 38-28. The bright spot offensively for Indiana in the first half was Tayton Conerway, who got to the rim when he wanted and scored a team-high 10 points.

The Hoosiers came out of the half with better intensity defensively and trimmed the Iowa lead to five at 42-37 by the first media timeout. Conor Enright, who had three first-half fouls, started the half on the bench in place of Nick Dorn, who hit a 3-pointer and grabbed three rebounds before the first media timeout. The Hawkeyes, however, quickly stretched the lead back to 10 at 47-37 by the 14:46 mark after Enright picked up his fourth foul on a 3-point attempt by Stirtz. The Hoosiers, however, charged right back to make it 49-43 after a bucket by Lamar Wilkerson. Iowa grew the lead back to 10 at 57-47 on a 3-pointer from Stirtz, giving him 25 for the game. At the under-eight media timeout, Iowa had its largest lead at 60-48. The Hawkeyes pulled away from there and picked up their first road win of the season and IU dropped its third straight contest with a road trip to Michigan looming on Tuesday.

Standout performers

Conerway led the Hoosiers with 16 points in 31 minutes and Sam Alexis added 13 points and eight rebounds in 28 minutes.

Statistics that stand out

In a 58-possession game, Iowa scored 1.29 points per possession, shot 50 percent from the field and went 21-for-23 from the free-throw line.

Up next for IU

The Hoosiers are back on the road to take on Michigan on Tuesday in Ann Arbor. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on Peacock/NBC Sports Network.
