Quick thoughts on an 84-66 win at Maryland:

How it happened

Indiana’s perimeter shooting struggled in the first half of Wednesday’s road trip to Maryland. The Terps made a conscious effort not to give the Hoosiers space on the perimeter and the result was a 2-for-12 performance from distance. To its credit, Indiana made Maryland pay by going to the basket and getting to the foul line. The Hoosiers were 16-for-16 from the stripe, which was enough to give them a five-point lead at the break at 36-31. For the second straight game, Tayton Conerway led the way for IU in the first half. The Troy transfer scored a game-high 13 points, including a 4-for-4 mark from the line. Reed Bailey (6-for-6 on free throws), Conor Enright and Lamar Wilkerson each added six points for IU.

After Maryland got within one at 39-38 on an Elijah Saunders 3-pointer early in the second half, IU went on a 9-2 run to push the lead to 48-40 at the under-16 media timeout. Lamar Wilkerson scored the last five points of that sequence and stretched the lead to 49-40 after the break when he made a free throw to complete a four-point play. Another Wilkerson 3-pointer gave IU a 52-40 lead, forcing Buzz Williams to take a timeout with 15:07 to play. Wilkerson scored 16 straight points for the Hoosiers before a Tucker DeVries layup stretched the lead to 17 at 61-44 with 11:34 remaining.

By the under-eight media timeout, IU led 69-52 after a Reed Bailey layup. A Bailey free throw after the timeout gave IU a 70-52 lead. An Elijah Saunders 3-pointer got Maryland within 13 at 75-62 with 4:21 to play and the Terps took their final timeout. But Indiana quickly stretched the lead back to 18 points with just under two minutes to go to seal their first road win of the season and improve to 3-1 to begin league play.

Standout performers

Wilkerson led IU with 24 points and six rebounds in 39 minutes. Conerway added 19 points, eight rebounds and four assists in 33 minutes.

Enright had a season-high 16 points to go along with four rebounds and three assists in 37 minutes. And Bailey added 15 points and six rebounds in 28 minutes off the bench.

Statistics that stand out

The Hoosiers shot 22-for-26 from the free-throw line and scored 15 points off of Maryland’s turnovers. IU also shot 6-for-13 on 3-pointers in the second half.

Up next for IU

The Hoosiers have a quick turnaround for a noon ET tip on Saturday against Nebraska at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. The Cornhuskers are 15-0 and ranked No. 10 in the latest Associated Press top 25 poll. Saturday’s game will be broadcast on BTN.
