A mid-December look at how 11 former IU basketball players are playing this season

Several former IU basketball players are playing well across the country this season. Three former IU Hoosiers are playing for Big Ten programs.

Here’s a look at how every former scholarship player for the Hoosiers is performing as the season nears the midway point:

Kaleb Banks, DePaul
Team record and KenPom rank: 8-3, No. 121

Banks earned a KenPom game MVP honor recently in a 92-49 win against Morgan State with a season-high 18 points on a 4-for-6 shooting performance and an 8-for-8 mark from the free-throw line.

The 6-foot-8 forward has made three starts and is averaging 7.7 points and 2.7 rebounds in 19 minutes per game. He’s shooting 48.1 percent from the field and 41.4 percent on 3-pointers.

Kanaan Carlyle, Florida Atlantic
Team record and KenPom rank: 8-3, No. 117

Carlyle appears to have his confidence back after a disastrous 2024-25 season in Bloomington. The Atlanta native is averaging 15.3 points in 31 minutes for the Owls.

He missed recent games against Florida Gulf Coast and St. Leo, but had 13 points in 20 minutes off the bench in a Dec. 13 win against Albany. The 6-foot-3 guard is shooting 94.1 percent from the line and 64.1 percent on 2s.

Gabe Cupps, Ohio State
Team record and KenPom rank: 8-2, No. 39

Statistically speaking, Cupps is essentially the same player he was at Indiana as a freshman. In 10 games for the Buckeyes, he’s averaging 2.4 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 16.3 minutes off the bench.

The former Ohio Mr. Basketball is shooting 33.3 percent from the field, 25 percent from 3-point range, and 81.8 percent from the free-throw line.

Logan Duncomb, Winthrop
Team record and KenPom rank: 7-5, No. 111

It’s been a long journey for Duncomb, who has battled injuries throughout his career, but he’s producing as a senior for the Eagles.

The 6-foot-10 center is averaging 15.5 points, 6.8 rebounds and a blocked shot in 22 minutes per game. He’s shooting 64.4 percent from the field and 70.2 percent from the free-throw line.

CJ Gunn, DePaul
Team record and KenPom rank: 8-3, No. 121

Gunn has come off the bench in the last two games for the Blue Demons and is averaging 14.2 points in 26.3 minutes per game. His 3-point shooting percentage is up to 36.

In DePaul’s most recent game, a 61-58 win at Wichita State, he scored 18 points and made four of his seven 3-point attempts in 30 minutes.

Dallas James, Morgan State
Team record and KenPom rank: 2-8, No. 361

The Bears are among the worst teams in Division I and the 7-footer has started eight of their 10 games.

James is averaging 2.2 points and 2.2 rebounds in 9.1 minutes per game.

Mackenzie Mgbako, Texas A&M
Team record and KenPom rank: 8-3, No. 53

Mgbako made his season debut for the Aggies against Manhattan on Nov. 21 and has now played in six games for first-year coach Bucky McMillan.

The former McDonald’s All-American has scored in double figures in four games and is averaging 10.2 points, 4.2 rebounds and an assist in 17.8 minutes. He’s shooting 38.3 percent from the field, 33.3 percent on 3-pointers and 88.2 percent on free throws.

Jakai Newton, Georgia State
Team record and KenPom rank: 2-9, No. 331

Newton, once a four-star prospect, is finally getting the chance for regular minutes at the Division I level after injuries held him back for years.

In seven games for the Panthers, he’s scored in double figures five times. He recently posted a career-high 18 points in a loss at Mercer and added 13 points in a home win against Jacksonville State on Dec. 13. Newton is averaging 9.9 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.3 steals in 21 minutes per game. He’s shooting 30.4 percent from the field, 24.3 percent on 3s and 75.9 percent from the free-throw line.

Malik Reneau, Miami (FL)
Team record and KenPom rank: 9-2, No. 36

Reneau is the go-to guy for the Hurricanes and has been dominant through 11 games. He’s averaging a career-best 20.4 points in 25.9 minutes per game.

The 6-foot-9 lefty is shooting 56.9 percent, is 9-for-24 on 3s and is also a solid 41-for-51 from the line, good for 80.4 percent. He’s also averaging 6.9 rebounds per game, up from 5.5 rebounds per game last season at IU.

Myles Rice, Maryland
Team record and KenPom rank: 6-5, No. 100

Rice was viewed as a strong bounce-back candidate in the preseason but got off to a slow start due to an injury.

He’s started in two of the seven games he’s played in for the Terps and has scored in double figures three times. In Maryland’s most recent game, a 101-83 loss to Michigan, Rice had 15 points off the bench in 20 minutes. He’s averaging 8.4 points, 2.4 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.4 steals in 18.4 minutes per game.

Bryson Tucker, Washington
Team record and KenPom rank: 7-3, No. 48

Tucker suffered an ankle injury that forced him to miss six games but he returned and scored 12 points in a win against Southern Utah on Dec. 13.

The 6-foot-7 wing is averaging 10.3 points and 6.5 rebounds in 23 minutes per game.
