IU football defensive end Stephen Daley likely out for CFP with injury

IU football defensive end Stephen Daley is likely to miss the College Football Playoff after he suffered an injury during the postgame celebration on Saturday following the Big Ten championship.

A video posted on social media showed Daley jumping to celebrate with fans in the stands at Lucas Oil Stadium after IU’s 13-10 win over Ohio Stadium.

The 6-foot-1, 273-pound lineman appeared to land awkwardly on his right leg.

Curt Cignetti confirmed the injury in a Zoom with reporters on Wednesday afternoon.

“I can confirm that he did sustain an injury,” Cignetti said. “A serious injury that will probably make him not available for the remainder of the season.”

Cignetti told reporters that he didn’t learn of the injury until well after the game.

“Sunday was still sort of waiting a little bit on images to come back, that sort of thing,” he explained. “So when I had my press conference (after the CFP draw), there was a little more information that still had to come in. I was still processing the whole thing because it was sort of unbelievable when I heard about it.”

Daley, a transfer from Kent State in his final season of eligibility, earned All-Big Ten honorable mention honors from the league’s coaches and media.

He totaled 38 tackles, including 19 tackles for loss, along with 5.5 sacks, a pair of forced fumbles and a pass breakup.
