At the Buzzer: Indiana 100, Marquette 77

  • 1h ago

Quick thoughts on a 100-77 win against Marquette at the United Center:

How it happened

Fouls were a theme of the first half. Reed Bailey picked up a pair in the opening minutes, forcing him to the bench. Marquette, with its attacking style, quickly got into the bonus less than five minutes in. With limited depth, it looked like IU might be in for a long afternoon at the United Center as the Golden Eagles marched to the free-throw line over and over.

After a pair of free throws by Chase Ross got Marquette within three at 32-29 with 7:46 left in the half, IU’s offense proved to be a separator. The Hoosiers outscored the Golden Eagles 24-9 the rest of the half to claim a 56-38 halftime advantage. Tucker DeVries was the difference maker. The 6-foot-7 wing shot 8-for-12 from the field, including a 5-for-7 mark on 3s, for 24 first-half points. Conor Enright’s half-court heave as time expired in the first half went in, extending IU’s lead to 56-38 at the break. The Hoosiers were 7-for-14 on 3s in the first half, 15-for-16 from the free-throw line and scored 1.42 points per possession.

Out of halftime, Marquette had an answer. IU’s offense was stagnant and the fouls continued to mount for the Hoosiers. On one IU possession early in the second half, Enright picked up two fouls. By the 13:44 mark, a 3-pointer from Zaide Lowery got the Golden Eagles within 10 at 65-55, forcing Darian DeVries to call a timeout. But a 3-pointer by DeVries, a layup by Trent Sisley and a 3-pointer by Lamar Wilkerson pushed the IU lead back to 16 at 73-57 at the under-12 media timeout.

With DeVries on the bench with four fouls, Wilkerson took over for the Hoosiers. The Sam Houston transfer knocked in two more 3s to push the IU lead to 20 at 83-63 by the under-eight media timeout. By the 5:19 mark, IU pushed its lead to 24 points on a Trent Sisley dunk as the Hoosiers cruised to their second win of the season.

Standout performers

Tucker DeVries led all scorers with 27 points and Wilkerson wasn’t far behind with 23. DeVries was 6-for-9 on 3s and added six rebounds. Wilkerson had eight assists, three rebounds, two steals and one blocked shot.

Trent Sisley had 15 points and five rebounds and Sam Alexis was the fourth Hoosier in double figures with 13 points to go along with five rebounds.

Statistics that stand out

Indiana scorched the nets from distance, finishing 14-for-28 on 3-pointers, good for 50 percent. The Hoosiers were also excellent from the free-throw line with a 20-for-24 performance from the stripe. IU also committed just eight turnovers.

Up next for IU

The Hoosiers return to Bloomington and will host Milwaukee on Wednesday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on FS1. The Panthers are 1-1 and host Little Rock on Monday.
