IU football is No. 2 in the first College Football Playoff rankings
The first College Football Playoff rankings were released Tuesday night and IU football is No. 2.
The initial top 12: 1. Ohio State; 2. Indiana; 3. Texas A&M; 4. Alabama; 5. Georgia; 6. Ole Miss; 7. BYU; 8. Texas Tech; 9. Oregon; 10. Notre Dame; 11. Texas; 12. Oklahoma
The 12-team playoff will be finalized on Sunday, December 7, following conference championship weekend.
The initial rankings provide a glimpse of how the committee currently views each team through 10 weeks of the regular season.
The CFP selection committee ranks its top 25 teams and at the conclusion of the regular season, the five highest-ranked conference champions and the next seven highest-ranked teams will be seeded into a 12-team bracket.
The four highest-seeded teams will receive a first-round bye.
The CFP first round matchups will feature four games between teams seeded No. 5 through No. 12. The higher-seeded team in each matchup will host. Last season, IU football was the No. 10 seed and played at No. 7 Notre Dame. The Hoosiers lost 27-17 to the Fighting Irish, the eventual national runner-up to Ohio State.
The full CFP playoff schedule, which was finalized earlier today, is available here.
Indiana, 9-0 overall, isĀ 6-0 in conference play with home wins against Illinois, Michigan State and UCLA and road wins at Iowa, Oregon and Maryland.
The Hoosiers will travel to Penn State this Saturday to take on the Nittany Lions at Beaver Stadium. FOX will have national coverage beginning at 12 p.m. ET.
