Quick thoughts on a 93-71 exhibition win against Mega Superbet:

How it happened

Saturday’s exhibition against the Serbian professional team Mega Superbet at Roberto Clemente Coliseum provided a significant step up in competition from Wednesday’s contest against Universidad de Bayamón. Indiana led 3-2 early, but foul trouble and hot shooting by Mega Superbet led to the Hoosiers falling behind quickly.

By the 5:48 mark of the first quarter, Mega led 16-8 and the lead stretched to 13 points at 25-12 late in the opening quarter. First-year IU coach Darian DeVries used his second timeout of the opening quarter after Mega stretched its lead to 17 points at 29-12. After shooting just 1-for-8 (unofficially) on 3s in the first quarter, IU trailed 31-16. Transition defense was a big problem for IU as Superbet shot 60 percent from the field and got to the line 12 times. Lamar Wilkerson’s five points led the Hoosiers after the first 10 minutes.

Mega Superbet opened the second quarter scoring with a 3-pointer to make it 34-16. The lead remained 18 at 39-21 with less than six minutes to go in the second frame. Reed Bailey scored six straight points to get the Hoosiers within 17 at 44-27 with 4:05 remaining before halftime. By the 1:01 mark, the Mega Superbet lead was 16 at 48-32 as Tayton Conerway found Tucker DeVries for a 3-pointer and then had a drive for a score. Trent Sisley’s 3-pointer late in the second quarter got the Hoosiers within 13 at 48-35. IU’s largest deficit of the half was 23.

Unofficial first half scoring for Indiana: Conerway 8, Bailey 6, Sisley 5, Wilkerson 5, Sam Alexis 4, Conor Enright 4, DeVries 3

IU cut the Mega Superbet lead to eight after a Wilkerson bucket and DeVries 3-pointer to begin the third quarter. Another 3-pointer from Wilkerson drew the Hoosiers within five at 48-43. Indiana tied the game at 49 after DeVries hit three free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt, making it a 28-5 run for IU. Mega Superbet scored the next four points to make it 53-49, but Wilkerson’s 3-pointer, the team’s seventh of the game, drew the Hoosiers back within one at 53-52. IU regained the lead at 54-53 on a putback dunk by Alexis. A 3-point play by Jasai Miles stretched the IU lead to three at 62-59. And the lead grew to five at 64-59 on another bucket by Alexis. An Aleksa Ristic 3-pointer pushed the lead to eight at 67-59 to end the third quarter.

The fourth quarter scoring opened with a Wilkerson bucket to make it 69-59, Indiana. Wilkerson’s 3-pointer stretched the lead to 11 at 74-63. The Hoosiers pushed the lead to 78-63 by the 6:46 mark, forcing a Mega Superbet timeout. The IU momentum continued out of the break. The Hoosiers scored the next five points, which included a Trent Sisley 3-pointer, to make it 83-63 and put the game out of reach for good.
