6-Banner Sunday: Significant college basketball rules changes announced

  • 10h ago

Welcome to another edition of 6-Banner Sunday, a joint production between The Assembly Call and Inside the Hall, where we highlight the five most essential IU basketball stories of the past week, plus take a look at how the other IU sports programs are doing.

Fans who don’t like all the reviews in college basketball got some welcome news this week. This is because it was announced that challenges are coming to college basketball that will more closely mirror the pros.

Besides this, a former Hoosier continues their series in the NBA Finals, Inside the Hall’s Big Ten at a glance series continues along with several recruiting updates. As usual, we will conclude with weekly shows and a look at other IU sports, including baseball, which has announced summer league assignments.

In brief news, Indiana confirmed a long-reported matchup. This involves their Dec. 6 game against Louisville in Indy, announced for 2 p.m. ET on CBS.

Here is what is in this week’s edition:

• NCAA announces rules changes for men’s college basketball
• Bryant and Pacers tied 2-2 with OKC in the NBA Finals
• Inside the Hall’s Big Ten offseason at a glance
• Recruiting updates
• Back Home Network shows
• Hoosier Roundup

Banner #1 – NCAA announces rules changes for men’s college basketball

Supporters of basketball have increasingly complained about all the stoppages for reviews at the monitor, particularly late in a close game. The NBA has seemingly found a balance in addressing this issue. They have maintained the flow by allowing only for challenges to fix wrong calls rather than potentially reviewing all plays.

Now the NCAA will do similar starting next season. Like the NBA, there will be similar limited circumstances where officials can initiate reviews. However, out-of-bounds calls must now be challenged at any time rather than ref-initiated. This was a major reason for constant time at the monitor towards the end of a given contest.

Similar to the pros, each coach will receive a single challenge per game, with an additional challenge rewarded if the first is successful. Also, any incorrect challenges will result in a timeout deducted and teams must have one available to initiate reviews.

Banner #2 – Bryant and Pacers tied 2-2 with OKC in NBA Finals

The NBA Finals continued this week with significant implications locally. Former Hoosier Thomas Bryant is part of the team that competes in Indiana and is just up the road from Bloomington. While he is the backup center to Myles Turner, he plays a critical role off the bench for the Pacers at times.

However, Bryant has contributed minimally since the first game of the series and has appeared only sparingly. With that said, he is playing for his second NBA championship and the Pacers look to deliver the state’s first major basketball title since IU in 1987.

Indiana as a whole is in a dog fight with the series tied at two games apiece against the favored Oklahoma City Thunder. The Pacers won a thriller in game three but were blown out in game two and collapsed late in game four. Indiana is making their first finals appearance since 2000 and will play game five tomorrow at 8:30 pm on ABC.

If they can win two more times, they will raise the Larry O’Brien Trophy as champions. It would be their first title since their ABA days in the 1970s.

Banner #3 – Inside the Hall’s Big Ten offseason at a glance

Inside the Hall continued its series looking at each Big Ten squad in detail. This week featured a breakdown of IowaWisconsinUSCOhio State, and Michigan State.

Highlight videos for several Hoosier recruiting targets have been released. This week’s releases were those of Bruce Branch IIIMalachi JordanRyan HamptonKohl Rosario, and Deron Rippey Jr.

This was not the only information when it came to recruiting. ITH put out its prospect big board for 2026, a potential future big man is expected to visit campus and the incoming transfer portal class was ranked seventh nationally by ESPN.

Banner #5 – Back Home Network shows

The Back Home Network was also on air multiple times this week. Crimson Cast and Dribble Drive both had shows over the last few days.

Also, another program unrelated to Assembly Call or Inside the Hall was released this week. However, it is a big one that is well known nationally as head coach Darian DeVries appeared on Jon Rothstein’s podcast.

Banner #6 – Hoosier Roundup
