Indiana’s 2025-26 roster will be built this spring by new coach Darian DeVries, who will navigate the transfer portal to assemble his first team in Bloomington.

Inside the Hall will examine some of the prospects linked to the Hoosiers this spring. Up next: Troy guard Tayton Conerway.

Numbers to know

66 career games at Troy: 13 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.5 steals in 25.4 minutes per game. Conerway is a career 47.3 percent shooter, 29.2 percent rate from 3-point range and 68.9 percent at the free throw line.

Background and potential fit

Conerway spent three years at the junior college level before finding his way to Troy and flourishing. Once a zero-star prospect in the 2020 class, Conerway now garners high-major interest in the transfer portal.

The 6-foot-3 guard started at Grayson College in Denison, Texas, where he averaged 7.7 points, 2.9 rebounds and 0.6 assists per game in 17 appearances. He shot 38 percent from the floor, including 30.4 percent from deep and 75 percent at the foul line.

After committing to Tarleton State, he instead transitioned to Ranger College in Ranger, Texas.

In the 2021-22 season, he averaged 18.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.5 steals per game in 23 contests, 13 of those starts. He shot 43.2 percent overall, with marks of 31.7 percent from long distance and 73.7 percent at the line.

The following year, he started just four of 35 games, yet averaged 15.7 points, 6.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.6 steals per game. He connected on 48.4 percent of shots, 34.4 percent from three and 74.9 percent at the free-throw line. He was named a 2022-23 NJCAA first-team All-American.

Still an under-the-radar prospect, Conerway committed to Troy. A junior in eligibility, he averaged 11.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.1 steals in 19.9 minutes per game, earning Sun Belt sixth man of the year honors.

That season, Conerway shot 47.5 percent from the floor, hitting at a 32.9 percent 3-point mark and 70.9 percent clip at the free throw line. He started in two of 32 games played.

This past season, Conerway became a full-time starter and made the most of it.

Starting all 34 games, Conerway produced 14.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 2.9 steals in 30.4 minutes per game. He shot 47.1 percent overall, 27 percent from deep and 66.4 percent mark at the charity stripe.

The once zero-star prospect was honored as the Sun Belt player of the year.

Conerway provided a historic season defensively. His 98 steals marked a Troy single-season record and ranked third nationally, as did his average of 2.9 takeaways per game.

Along with individual success, Conerway’s efforts led Troy to a four-way tie for first in the Sun Belt regular season title. As the No. 3 seed, the Trojans proceeded to win the Sun Belt conference tournament, earning a No. 14 seed in the NCAA tournament.

Troy fell to No. 3 seed Kentucky in the first round, but Conerway posted 12 points, four rebounds and four assists against the Wildcats.

It was reported Conerway intended to enter the transfer portal March 24. Like Lamar Wilkerson, Conerway will need to apply for extra eligibility through the NCAA’s December ruling applying a waiver for former JUCO players to extend eligibility in 2025-26.

Conerway is a two-way, physical guard who attacks the rim offensively and pesters opponents defensively. Around 62 percent of his shots come at the rim, where he doesn’t shy from contact and uses nifty finishing.

While his 3-point shooting percentage isn’t a major strength, his facilitating is above average and if surrounded by the right pieces, he could flourish as a playmaker and a lockdown defender.

Jeff Rabjohns first reported that Conerway is expected to visit IU this weekend on Thursday.
