6-Banner Sunday: Dusty May agrees to contract extension with Michigan
Welcome to another edition of 6-Banner Sunday, a joint production between The Assembly Call and Inside the Hall, where we highlight the five most essential IU basketball stories of the past week, plus take a look at how the other IU sports programs are doing.
While IU has not had any games since 6-Banner was last published, plenty of other news occurred in the Indiana basketball world this week. The biggest of these stories was another big name seemingly removing himself from being the next coach in Bloomington and the women getting their biggest win of the season by taking out top-10 Ohio State.
A signature non-conference matchup was also announced. As usual, we will conclude with weekly shows and a look at other Hoosier sports, led by softball, which continues to roll early in the season.
Here is what is in this week’s edition:
• Dusty May agrees to contract extension with Michigan
• IU women beat No. 8 Ohio State to move another step closer to sixth straight NCAA tournament bid
• Hoosiers take on Purdue today in Bloomington
• IU to play Marquette in Chicago next season
• Podcast on the Brink and Back Home Network shows
• Hoosier Roundup
IU men’s basketball will play six games this season on Peacock and the women will play five contests on Peacock, making the streaming service a must-have for IU basketball fans. Banner #1 – Dusty May agrees to contract extension with Michigan
For the second straight week, another name associated with the IU coaching job seemingly removed himself from contention. Last week, Brad Stevens, arguably the number one choice among many fans, spoke out and confirmed that he would not be a candidate.
This week, the number two option many supporters had dreamed about was likely put to bed. While former Hoosier student manager and Bloomington area native Dusty May did not mention Indiana by name, he did agree to a contract extension at Big Ten rival Michigan.
Where the Hoosiers will turn next for their fourth head coach since 2016-2017 remains to be seen. Inside the Hall put together a hot board of potential candidates, which included May before the story of his new deal on Friday. Also, Scott Drew of Baylor was profiled and St. John’s coach Rick Pitino suggested someone controversial who has had massive success on the court but troubles off it in Ole Miss coach Chris Beard.
Banner #2 – IU women beat No. 8 Ohio State to move another step closer to sixth straight NCAA tournament bid
On the other side of Assembly Hall, things have been going much better for the women’s squad recently despite some inconsistencies throughout the season. The Hoosiers had a huge week knocking off their first elite opposition of the year by taking out top-10 Ohio State and shredding the signature Buckeye press.
With this result, the squad is now 17-9 overall and 9-6 in the league. They have all but secured a 6th straight appearance in March Madness but would like to improve their seeding. They head to a ranked Michigan State squad today at 2 pm Eastern time on BTN before hosting Maryland Thursday at 7 pm on Peacock for their home finale.
Banner #3 – Hoosiers take on Purdue today in Bloomington
The Men sit at 15-11 overall and 6-9 in the league after falling to UCLA a week ago Friday. They still sit outside the NCAA Tournament picture and have been off for almost ten days. Today is their last chance to pick up a signature win when they host arch-rival Purdue at 1:30 pm on CBS.
After the Boilermakers, they face a couple of teams towards the bottom of the league later this week. On Wednesday, they play Penn State at 8:30 pm on BTN in Assembly Hall before traveling to the West Coast against Washington on Saturday at 6 pm on Peacock.
Banner #4 – IU to play Marquette in Chicago next season
While the coach and roster remain in flux, a marquee non-conference game was announced for next season on November 9th. The Hoosiers will face Marquette at the United Center in Chicago.
Indiana draws well in the Windy City and often outnumbers Northwestern fans on the road. However, this will be a more prestigious opponent that IU does not see regularly in a larger arena. This contest will also be one of two appearances in this venue for 2025-2026 as the Big Ten Tournament will be held in this same building the following March.
These two squads last faced off in 2018-2019. Despite the struggles that year overall, the Hoosiers showed promise early and pounded the Golden Eagles 96-73 in Assembly Hall before things went downhill in conference play.
Banner #5 – Podcast on the Brink and Back Home Network shows
Podcast on the Brink was recorded this week. The episode featured Rick Bozich of WDRB.com to discuss the coaching search.
The Back Home Network has also been on air multiple times in the last few days. Crimson Cast, Doing The Work, Dribble Drive, and Xs and Joes all had shows.
