The 2012-2013 Indiana Hoosiers, the preseason No. 1 in both the Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN coaches top 25 polls, took the floor for their second public scrimmage of the season on Sunday afternoon at Assembly Hall.

Inside the Hall has compiled close to three minutes of high-definition quality highlights from the “Haunted Hall” Cream vs. Crimson scrimmage in the embedded media player below:

The crean team looks superb. Can’t wait to see the hurrying hoosiers push the ball down the court for quick transition buckets. The person who surprised me the most was actually Remy Abell. He seemed to be shooting from the perimeter better and can run the floor for lay-ups etc. He wont be a starter obviously, but I expect him to get more minutes than last year, coming off the bench to relieve Yogi or maybe some time at the two.

    GLORY…. GLOOOOOORRRRRY!!!

    (Granted, it’s a highlight reel!)

    1. The idea and fantasy of seeing a talented player develop a solid baby hook might be fulfilled as Cody goes everyday against Jurkin. It’s like the knuckleball… money all day if you take the time to develop it.

    2. Just saw more interior quality passing than I saw all of last year, and not from just Yogi.

    3. Remy lets us know that Yogi ain’t getting no Diaper Dandy reputation off of him – different game but no major drop-off.

    4. No way I would expect that much quality, nothing-but-net and elevation play with where they should be fatigue-wise.

    5. The mid-range jumper game is way up… lot of money to be made at 15 feet and this team will collect.

    6. This team has Will, Victor, Cody, Hollowell, Hanner, and even CWat ALWAYS looking for a seam for offensive rebounds above the rim.

    7. It felt like they didn’t really shoot from 3-pt range, but I know they did.

I am sure there was some slop on the cutting room floor, but that scrimmage was COMPELLING.

    For anyone there:

Did Cody try any jumpers or threes?

What was the Sheeladipo leadership vibe like?

Did Hollowell have the same quiet swagger from the first?

Is Jordy that much better than last year with the Remy and Yogi daily challenges?

I absolutely love seeing Yogi’s ball handling and decision making! And it looks like Remy is really playing with confidence. Crean just has a way of taking undervalued recruits and making them special. November 9 can’t get here soon enough!

After watching this clip, my impression:
    1. Yogi Ferrell should start
    2. Will Sheehey may end up in NBA
    3. Remy Abell sees significant minutes this season
    4. Cody Zeller will dominate
    5. Everybody is so confident

The 2 things that stood out for me in the video was yogi’s vision and the spot up 3 by VO. Yogi is going to change the way we play this year. Also, if VIc can consistently be a threat from three, watch out. Although we will lose him to the NBA if that is the case. He may have fixed his ONLY weakness as a player, spot up shooting.

  • Derbus

The WEAPONS are limitless! If our D-Fense can match our offense @ a 70% clip, then WOW! If it can match it @ a 90% clip, then IU IS a hoops juggernaut!
OK, Remy is a machine in this clip, Will is as well, the IU stars are all over the court! Omg! I am speechless. Too bad Cal did not want to schedule IU for a mop up of pUKe! Lmao

Victor didn’t seem like he led much during the scrimmage, but he was on the team with Yogi and Cody. Sheehey, however, looked to be leading the white team with Jordan Hulls. Sheehey looked really good, I don’t doubt Crean when he says he’s right there as most improved.

I think Cody tried a jumper, but didn’t hit. He had a couple opportunities. He was mostly dominating inside and didn’t need to.

Hollowell had some swagger on a few blocks that looked nice. When Crean put the “best 7” on the red team for the 4 minute situation, he put Jeremy on the white team and Jeremy looked a little frustrated with himself and his walk-on teammates. But he did put that team on his back offensively for a possession or two. Interesting to see.

Jordan looked like Jordan later in the scrimmage. Honestly Yogi’s man defense looks tremendous and Jordy could never really get a shot off with Yogi on him. I think it’s more of a testament to how hard Yogi has worked on defense really.

Watford scared me early on, couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn. But he got in a rhythm late and hit a couple 3’s.

Sorry this is so long, but I have 3 essential takeaways from this.
    1. Cody Zeller is absolutely dominant in every facet of his game.
    2. Will Sheehey is really, really good. He had the tip slam above everyone and the stop and pop jumper, really showed what he can do.
    3. For the second time, Yogi blew me away. My expectations for him coming into the year were too low. He’s a phenomenal passer, sometimes I didn’t even see him pass the ball and his teammate is taking a layup. I mean really, Yogi is every. Single. Bit. As good as Burke from what I’ve seen.

  • easysoul

Wow! Constantly practicing against five potential starters has the first five performing at a high clip!

  • Evansville Hoosier

I loved this, it’s probably one of the few times I’ll sit at half court 3 rows back in my life. The play was electric and very fun to watch. My favorite part had to be Victor netting that 3, I think his shot really has improved. I’d still like to know though, is Will Sheehey ok after what happened at the scrimmage? What DID happen? He fell in a heap and I held my breath for probably a minute. After the performance he put on, it’s pretty clear losing him for a significant amount of time would be a huge blow to us.

  • Pritch24

Did Will get hurt last night?

  • cdog

Love everything about this team. The only thing that worries me is the front court depth. It looks like Hanner did not play again and I did not see anything from Peter in this highlight real. With Elston being out for an extended period, we need these two to step up and give us quality minutes. It is even scarier that neither has cleared the NCAA clearinghouse yet. The games against some of the Big10 elite will require muscle up front. I am just a little worried if Zeller or Watford gets in foul trouble. I think JH has a great opportunity to prove he is capable of starting next year. I just hope Anya picks IU.

  • Being that I have one of the best seats in the house, I could hear most of the talking on the court. Victor was talking the whole time. Getting in the white teams head and talking to his teammates. Yogi did a lot of talking too.

Jurkin was tough on Cody. Blocked his shot on a dunk attempt. Didn’t back down. Looked lost after the ball went up but was holding his own on the block. He will make Cody better.

Seemed to get tripped up on Cody’s feet and went down grimassing. He left the floor for the remainder of the scrimmage (which was nearly over anyway)

  • Evansville Hoosier

I don’t want to alarm anyone because I have absolutely no idea what happened or if he is really hurt at all. What I saw was Victor driving through the lane and Will went down, but I didn’t see him get hit or anything… But he did take a minute to get up, walked off on his own power, and then didn’t play the rest of the scrimmage.. Maybe he was holding his face? I don’t know, injuries just always scare me.

Yogi’s passing ability is gonna be amazing this year… The last highlight 2 passes to the floor running center was pretty neat! Zeller is obviously amazing… But I think somebody like Abell, Sheehey and Oladipo are going to grow even more this year!

  • sycamorehoosier

Any thoughts on how much Peter can grow as a player facing Zeller everyday… ?

  • Evansville Hoosier

I agree, I think Abell should take a similar jump to the ones Sheehey and Oladipo took from their freshman to sophomore years. Just makes us that much deeper.

  • Evansville Hoosier

Defense is already very solid, probably because he’s been playing Cody. Rebounding isn’t great, he has to learn to go get it at its highest point and he will be elite in that regard. His offensive game is very much a work in progress, and his hands still need work.

  • CreanFaithful

I watched the full length video on the forum and thought Peter made a few nice defensive plays against Cody early on. Then Cody started doing what Cody does… There is no doubt Peter’s development will be expedited by playing against such a great player.

  • Evansville Hoosier

ball handling looked improved as well.

  • Evansville Hoosier

were you the one that Remy fell on after that block by Jeremy? That looked rough…

  • No. I was at the other end.

  • SirEric

If Victor is hitting step back 3’s…we’re gonna be tough to beat.

  • FanaticHoosier

I would of liked to seen a few more defensive highlights. We all know what the team is capable of doing offensively, it is the defensive side where we need to see improvement.

  • Mop Lady

did we make the final 2 for Anya?

  • hoosiersteve

Lost in all of this is how the monstrosity that is the BIG logo has tarnished what once was a beautiful, pristine hardwood flloor with nothing but the State of Indiana on it. No paint in the lanes, no gaudy logos. How long until some bank or other sponsor has its logo on the floor? Not long, I am afraid.

  • What I took away from the scrimmage:

-Will is ALL business. Without a doubt he is the best 6th man in the country.

-Going to be hard to keep Remy off the floor. Solid, Solid, Solid.

-Vic is going to get his when attacking the basket. And he did net a 3.

-PJ is going to spell Zeller just fine. Showed a decent mid-range touch in warm-ups.

-Yogi is B1G FOY…write it down. (Sorry, Harris.)

    -Cody is….well Cody.

-Your going to hear “Yogi to Zeller” A LOT this year.

  • Evansville Hoosier

I’m sorry, best 7 was incorrect. I’m guessing Crean wanted regular rotation guys to play on the red team for the situation (down 6 with 4 minutes left) but he also wanted to give them a little competition. Will was already out for the day with whatever happened in his tumble earlier, but Crean wanted the red team to have some depth in the front court, so he put Jeff Howard on red to spell Cody. In a real game I’m guessing that would’ve been Jurkin.
    But yes, it was
    Yogi
    Jordan
    Victor
    Watford
    Zeller
    Remy
(front court depth I presume) Jeff Howard

Honestly, I think Remy probably is our 7th best player. He’s played very well both ways in the scrimmages I’ve seen, and he’s shot the ball well. He’ll be great for our depth at either guard.

  • Derbus

How does Anya selecting IU help us now?

    I prefer Noah.
No need to get in a tizzy, Derek & Hanner will be suiting up soon.
Many Hoosier players will be feedin’ the CTC Express!

Yogi, Victor and Cody all played the passing lanes very well, each got a steal or two. Jeremy had a couple chase down blocks, apparently he’s getting good with those. As I’ve mentioned before, opposing ball handlers had a a VERY tough time with Yogi on them. Everything they did seemed more difficult.

  • Derbus

CWat is gonna have some off nights this year, just like last year. The uptick is no more stagnant Verdell 40% fg or turnovers. CWat needs to attack ALL year, like his great games last year. The rest is all upside since everyone has transcended to another level. The frosh are amazing!
Sheeladipo is a MONSTER!!! Hurry, call the Avengers!

I was hesitant to say Yogi gets it over Harris (still am; need to see him playi g for Sparty before I say it definitively) but I have no problem saying Yogi is one of the top 5 to 10 PG’s in the nation already. How he was 24th in this class I’ll never know, but he’s a force to be sure.

It’s B1G rules to have the logo on the court. IU had no say in the matter.

  • InTheMtns

Think so – I believe he said he is down to Indiana and N.C. State as his final two.
