• Alex,

I know you guys are probably sick of answering this question but I am confused about the scholarship situation. If all of the verbal commits sign tomorrow wouldn’t that eat up the 1 oversign we are allowed. Therefore preventing Gary from signing unless he waits until next spring and one is freed up by then. I might be confused on this. Thanks and great work on this site! It seems like I check it every 10 minutes.

Kentucky is out.  Don’t think he’s made up his mind yet but he himself seems to favor IU.  His parents, I have no idea but they probably want him close to home like any parent would.  They probably want him around kids they endorse as well and I’d put Cody and Yogi up against Hammons any day.  If Gary goes to IU and wins a 6th banner with his crew he and his parents would be loved thoughout most of the state for the next 50 years.

Holy cow, can you imagine Gary with the other guys, it would be like the Beatles all over again.  At Purdue alone half the crowd would be cheering IU because they just can’t help themselves.  They’d say, “thank you for showing us how it’s done and keeping the margin under 50”.  Is there room for a 6th banner, just asking.

OK, obviously I didn’t read ALL the comments before I posted like I said I did, because you said everything I did, only you did it 4 hours earlier.

  • MillaRed

The thing I got out of this (got it) is his football season is not over. And this will back up his commitment. Yay!

Would prefer to get this over with ASAP. And think it’s MSU.

  • Anonymous

Kentucky may be the only team that has a recruit he’d have to potentially play second fiddle to, or at least be an equal with, in Archie Goodwin

  • IUJeff

How could you not want to play with Cody, Yogi, Jeremy, Will, Vic, Buss, Hanner, Jurkin, Remy, CWat, Elston, Jordy and Austin? We will be scary good either way next year.

  • LTTelamon

I am absolutely certain this will not be a problem. Crean would not be pushing this hard if he didn’t already have a plan. As far as what that is, I’m not going to speculate, but if Gary is willing to commit, Crean will make it happen.

  • LTTelamon

Interesting… I didn’t know most of the Spartan folks were thinking they’d lost this kid. I think you’re right, though, on the distance factor.

  • Anonymous

That was a very awkward interview to say the least.  I kept thinking that the guy was blowing it for MSU.  Gary was thinking, man if I come here, this guy is going to be bugging the crap out of me.  I did like the response he gave when IU was brought up, but wouldn’t jump to any conclusions.

  • N71

What?  Where are you getting this?

  • Anonymous

I believe that I don’t have a clue about which school he might pick between IU, Purdue, Mi St. KY is out. But I do not see how he can pick IU and sign in November with our scholarship numbers. Does anyone have the answer to that? Would IU make Peter Jurkin wait until April?

  • Anonymous

No you’re not.  You just found this site, because you have never posted here before those two comments.  If you were a diehard fan, you would have been here before you decided to prod with that crap.  Go away Boiler.

  • Anonymous

I ask the same Q Garth. I actually like Remy Abell as a new player. However, he is no Gary Harrris. But is it possible that Crean new or figured out that Gary would pick Purdue or MI St and that is why he added Remy late last spring-summer?

  • I asked the same question above. If my math is correct, I don’t see how he can sign if all the other commits sign first. If all 5 verbals sign then than that will eat up the oversign. This is according to my cousin who is a lot better at understanding this scholarship stuff than I am.

  • MillaRed

He actually looks to have the, “Man I want to get the H away from this guy as quickly as possible” face. But that line would really suck in a song.

  • Anonymous

That is not an answer to the question of “how”. There is no magic wand that Coach Crean can waive. One of the existing 5 recruits, each of whom has given their trust to IU and Coach Crean, would have to be told to wait until April AND 2 players with eligibility on the squad with scholarships now would have to go off scholarship before August 2012. So I ask again-how can it work?

  • MillaRed

Get that parade ready in West Lafayette, not for Gary Harris because he isn’t coming. It’s actually for our 2013 Final Four team. We’ll be passing through on the way to the dance.

  • Anonymous

With or without Gary Harris, Purdue still recruits good kids and coaches them up well. I want to Beat Purdue in everything! Now Indiana is back to the level where we should beat Purdue in basketball and be in the Big 10 top 3-5!

  • MillaRed

I’m not feeling Purdue at all actually. But I like your denial. It helps with the stress.

If you continue to behave yourself we will let you hang out in here without egging your house you Spartan you.

  • Anonymous

And Kidd-Gilchrist since there will not be an NBA again for some long time, both sides are that dumb!

  • MillaRed

I think that’s very possible. At some point you exhaust all of your resources and if you are not feeling it you move on.

Regardless, someone would have to leave the program and I won’t speculate on who that may be. But if Gary is coming, someone is leaving. Trust me.

  • MillaRed

You answered your own question Loop. Which makes me believe he is not IU bound. It just seems like to much to ask of the program. I don’t think it needs the controversy.

  • Anonymous

You are correct. Only 5 can sign in November. So if Gary picks IU, someone has to wait until April, AND 2 guys with scholarships now must go off of scholarship before the start of school in August 2012! You can never have more that 13 on scholarship and active (no medical waiver).

  • Anonymous

Once you, Gary Harris, decide, why wait? Set up the news conference after football is completed and pull the trigger? But if it is not IU don’t expect the media explosion!

  • LTTelamon

Alex has frowned enough on that sort of speculation. I’m not going to go there. If you want to force the conversation that direction, that’s your prerogative.

  • Anonymous

I was hoping that you might have the magic wand. I would really like for Gary Harris to wear the Candy-stripes, and help lead IU to another banner. But I don’t want to “screw” any of the existing recruits and players. Does anyone have an answer for how we can have our cake and eat it too?

  • Anonymous

I DO NOT want to speculate on any player or recruit. I am looking for some answer that does not require that move. So is your answer that such a move is the only way for it to happen?

  • Anonymous

As close to the vest as this kid has played it from the word go, I’m with you, a person is just as likely to be able to look at the tea leaves and know what is going to happen as he is to know what is going to happen by watching yet another 4 or 5 minute clip of him being asked, for the most part, the same questions that he has answered a thousand times in the past.

  • Anonymous

i disagree. the fact that he brought up playing in front of hoosier nation says to me that he came away VERY impressed with the love he was shown at hoosier hysteria. If he ends up not going to IU i guarantee IU comes in at a very close second

  • Anonymous

Now that was kinda mean. You know that those that are severely mentally handicapped can’t be held responsible for what they say.

No, wait a minute, comparing those two kinds really isn’t fair, a mentally handicapped person had no control over their situation which is something that can’t be said for a PUke fan.

  • MillaRed

Mike, you know as well as anyone I am a very mean person. It’s how I roll…….

  • LTTelamon

That’s my thought on how it would likely occur, yes. I don’t think there’s any loophole or some such that Crean has up his sleeve. To my knowledge, the scholarship rules are pretty ironclad. The only other possibility is that a player on the team has already told Crean that he’s willing to pay his way.

  • Anonymous

On that note, do you think Gary and other high-profile players are more prone to joining a loaded team–such as ours starting in 2012–due in part to the NBA’s new tendency to form super-teams (Miami Heat, Boston Celtics)?  I feel like in years past, players would want to go to a team where they would dominate the touches, but perhaps now college players look to the NBA and see their idols joining up forces?  Thoughts?

  • MillaRed

I will pass this on one more time because I think his decision will come soon and we can all move one.

Kentucky – Too late in the game. They have 1-2 GH types on the roster. I think we was flattered but the move to the KY jelly state is too much to deal with as a Hoosier.

Purdue – I’m sure he likes Painter, his parents have history there, but where is the Final Four? If Painter could not do it the last two years, it’s not gonna happen. Purdue is no longer a school on the rise.

Indiana – On the rise, been there done that with Final Fours and Banners. Many of his friends in the mix. But I think the stars are already too bright. I think we finish a close 2nd.

Mich St – Aside from watching Izzo looking like he is giving birth every time they are called for a foul, he is a great coach. They are in need of a Gary Harris more than IU is at this time. And I’m sorry guys, it just looks like a good fit. The stars are aligned and I think they point to Sparty.

I agree, I have not had the warm fuzzies with GH the way I did with Zeller, Hollowell, Yogi, etc.  But this interview sounded really positive for IU and it is giving me that glimmer of hope…

  • Glawton12

113 comments on a video that tells us nothing we don’t already know: this kid is going to one of four schools.  Someone should show Harris the buzz he creates within the IU fan base.  If he doesn’t already know, that is.

  • Glawton12

The interview took place at HSE, not Michigan State.

  • Anonymous

Correct me if I am wrong, Loop, but athletic redshirts do not count against the 13 man roster, right?

  • Anonymous

Completely agree.  I have a really difficult time reading his interviews.  I would be surprised if he chooses UK, but other than that, nothing would surprise me.  Personally, I think that he hasn’t made up his mind yet.  He likes something different about each of those three schools, and he needs to decide what is the most important to him.  I like the fact that he mentioned that he’d like to play in front of Hoosier Nation.

Regardless, whatever school gets him is going to get a great player.  I still think he ends up wearing Green.

  • MillaRed

I think they do. If not UNC, Duke, KY etc would be redshirting 5-stars every year and reloading.

    Thanks.

Well, I guess that pretty much shoots the whole nun image all to hell. Maybe it should MillaAntiNun

Redshirts do count against the scholarship limit. You may only have 13, including redshirts. However, if a kid has a medical problem and will never play again, then the financial aid continues and it does not count against the 13 limit. So Creek does count as a scholarship, but in football Price does not.

  • Anonymous

113 and counting. Nothing crazy about IU fans and bball, no, nothing at all. Bball is just an afterthought most of the time.

Just like the fan base of any other college with a bball team. DWS

  • IUJeff

I am not a big fan of having no allegiance to your current team, and the stacking of super teams the way the NBA players have recently.

I much more prefer to have an all Indiana kids team who plays for the pride of their home state and college. So I could not even venture a guess as to what future NBAers are thinking on that topic.

But, I do believe this. If GH comes to IU, he will get better by playing against the toughest competition each and every day in practice and in games. Therefore, he will become more NBA ready at IU, even in one year IMO.

  • Anonymous

Thanks, guys.  I’d love to have him, but it is hard to see us removing two players from the list of existing players.  One…maybe.  I don’t know about two.

  • IUJeff

Wishful thinking was that GH be on a football scholly… Looks like that is not gonna happen now or maybe never was.

  • IU can sign a total of five during the early signing period from what I understand.

  • Redshirts count against the limit.

  • InTheMtns

That is my sense of it, too – he hasn’t made up his mind yet. I think it might be a tie right now between all four schools with each school having something he likes best. And now he has to figure out what one thing means the most to him. I think he might wait until football is completed before he focuses fully on making his choice.
