Report: Mitch McGary cuts list to six schools

  • 08/09/2011 12:08 pm in

According to Dave Telep of ESPN.com, 2012 Brewster Academy big man Mitch McGary has narrowed his list of schools down to six. And neither Indiana or Purdue made the cut:

Making the cut, in no specific order are Florida, Maryland, North Carolina, Michigan, Duke and Kentucky.

In-state schools Indiana and Purdue are not being considered and McGary feels good about his list, though he left the door cracked.

“Maybe if another school stays in contact, but I kind of wanted to narrow it down to these six,” said the No. 4 overall player in the 2012 class. “I’ve got strong feelings about these six schools.”

Indiana’s involvement with McGary, which was strong last winter, cooled off in recent months. Here’s what the five-star big man told Inside the Hall last December about his interest in the Hoosiers:

“Coach Crean thinks I can be an NBA player. He wants me right now. He says I’d fit great there. I think so, too. I like Coach Crean, I like the whole coaching staff at IU and I like some of the recruits they’ve got now. I think I’d fit in well with them.”

Indiana currently has five verbal commitments in its 2012 recruiting class, which is ranked No. 1 nationally by ESPN.com.

I personally really wanted Mitch.  I think he, Zeller, Hanner and Lyles would make up the best front court in the nation in 2014.  With Yogi at point and our strenght on the wings…national title.

Regardless, we are in good shape.  And, given Crean’s track record, I have to believe there is a reason we are not on his radar b/c we could be if we wanted to.

Given the situation, I hope he goes to Florida.

I think Coach wanted him for 2011, but not so much for 2012.  I think that he has what he wants in 2012 with the bigs.  Plus, as Aaron says, they want Harris more.

Well, piss!  I was hoping we’d stay in this and be the sleeper with McGary.  I was one of the first on here calling him a future flat out stud when a lot of people were questioning his athletic ability and work ethic.  I hope the comment about a school staying in contact was a message to CTC and IU that they could get back in it if they want, but at this point I just hope he doesn’t go to Michigan or pUKe.

Dirk Nowitzki is the only 6″11  player I would want out by the three point line, this kid has worked hard to improve his post play, but prefers shooting jumpers, and will probably end up at a school that will let him drift out there. With the plethora of guards and tweener type guys Crean keeps his teams loaded up with, we need our big guys to play like big guys…maybe that’s why we backed off???

I dunno..something about this guy rubbed me wrong. May end up a first round NBA choice..but Crean obviously backed off of him..not to say IU was among MMc”s favorite programs. U can’t get them all..but I hope IU keeps trying!

It is now down to Gary Harris or the 5 great Hoosier commitments that we have now will be the class of 2012. What a great group we have right now! 2012-13 will be an awesome season. Now let’s win 20 and go to the Tourney in 2011-12!

Yes, that interview a couple of months ago made him sound a little disappointed.

I really think he is one and done, so this doesn’t bother me at all. If it were a 3 year gig, that’s different but I’m just not feeling it.

wheres the competitive spirit Hoosier Fans? C’mon now thats what makes Indiana what it is, COMPETITIVENESS.

Here is what i hope to see play out. I hope he commits to Kentucky, along with the rest of the high school kids that cant pass basic algebra AND I hope that we beat them all four years he is there. That would be ideal for me.

Since he doesn’t want to be part of the Hoosiers, I’d like to see him stay in the Big10 and go with Michigan.

When I went to IU in the mid nineties Michigan was our main rival in the Big Ten.  We hated them a close second to Purdue.

They had a great program for a little while until they got caught cheating with the fab five.

It seems like MM likes to play out on the perimeter…I think he could thrive in Beilein’s system…just like Kevin Pittsnogle at WVU when he coached there…

Oh yes my friends, a Kevin Pittsnogle reference

I remember well. And I’ve always thought it a shame that they could never break out of their post-Five funk.

I’m just saying that the next time they want to feel Fab, I hope they…like MSU, OSU, UK, L’Ville, Tennessee, or Duke, UNC, or Alford…don’t get that way via Indiana high school products. At least not unless IU has had its pickings first.

Michigan is a dying state.  The population is declining and they don’t produce as much talent as a decade or two ago.  Combined with the rise of Michigan State and Beilein is going to continue recruiting Indiana hard.

    FTR, loved the reference
