Maurice Aniefiok “very interested” in IU, according to coach

  • 02/21/2011 8:25 pm in

As we reported on Twitter earlier this afternoon, Indiana coach Tom Crean was in Huntington, West Virginia today to scout 2011 Huntington Prep guard Maurice Aniefiok.

The 6-5, 220-pound senior came to the United States last August from Nigeria and is drawing interest from Duquesne, Mississippi, UCLA, USC, Arizona State and Baylor. Aniefiok had been considered a heavy lean to West Virginia, but the two parted ways in January.

Aniefiok, who is not ranked by Scout.com or Rivals.com, described himself as a combo guard that can do a bit of everything.

“In between shot, 3-pointer I can knock down, rebound, if I get a free lane I flush down with a dunk,” he said. “A little bit of everything. I won’t really say I’m a two-guard or one. I’m more of a combo guard.”

Rob Fulford, Aniefiok’s coach at Huntington Prep, offered a similar assessment and also added that Aniefiok’s body fat is less than three percent.

“He’s a catch-and-shoot guy, he’s a rebounder, he’s a physically imposing guard,” Fulford told Inside the Hall’s Zach Osterman. “He can get his own shot, he can catch and shoot. He’s a very good offensive rebounding guard, he’s a very good defensive rebounding guard.”

Aniefiok has not been offered a scholarship by Indiana and said he does not have a timetable on when he might decide on a school. The spring signing period begins on April 13.

“I have to sit down with some people and discuss it,” he said. “They are not going to influence me on where I am supposed to go or where not to go. I’m going to take my visits and when I’m done taking my visits, then we’ll sit down and make a decision. But I’m going to be the one making the decision.”

As for his interest in the Hoosiers, Fulford believes it is significant, but said the Hoosier staff might want to see Aniefiok in a game before deciding whether to offer a scholarship.

“He’s obviously very interested. All of this has kind of come quick,” Fulford said. “I think he (Crean) may want to see him play in a game. Bennie (Seltzer) was in to see him play last week. He (Crean) came in, and Maurice played the same today as he played when Bennie was here.”

  • Does this mean that Crean has sensed Gary Harris going a different way with his recruitment?

I thought we needed a big for the 2011 class to compliment Zeller??

What are the chances of getting a true post player for 2011 ?Why isnt this our top priority ?

  • Anonymous

I think this is just putting pressure on him to make a decision if anything.

I have zero problems with pursuing a kid like this. A 220 pound guard…geez. I think the ship may have sailed on adding a post next season with Pitchford committed to UF. I know I know we want Harris or Hollowell, but if those kids want to come in and compete then fine but I want to compete next year. We are losing JR and just think if JR had offensive ability like this kid apparently does to go along with his defensive ability…..like this kid does.

Not to mention….we are down a wing with Mo Creek…and maybe a healthy Mo is the final piece to the 2012 class.

  • Anonymous

I don’t see it that way. Just looking for help next year, will worry about that later. I’d imagine he would start picking it up with Hollowell or DSR if he sensed Harris going elsewhere

  • Kelin Blab

I also read today….he was really interested in WVU but they have moved on to another kid, so that could bode well for IU

We don’t need a true post player, not going so far to say we dont need some more size but this system does not involve a true post player. Add one more year of strength to Elston, Pritch and Watford as well as the height of Zeller and we will be fine. A big man isnt going to win us a title next year so i dont see the big fuss about it. Zeller improves us and add Perea and Jurkin in 2012 and we look pretty good inside. Yes we have currently a good number of gaurds but how many are pure scorers? How many can create a shot on there own? IMO we dont specifically need this guy, but as far as a big man goes i would start putting focus on 2013. To my knowledge, please please let me know if i am wrong but we arent high on any list for a good athletic big man in 2011? Last thing we need is another 6’9 guy that isnt athletic enough to outrebound the likes of a 6’8 mbakwe…

I read a story on a West Virginia fan site that had a picture in which he looks to have an NBA ready body right now. The Big Ten will be lacking big physical guards like this next year, he could be a huge risk (sounds like he has some eligibilty questions) but could also end up being a steal.

    Can’t hurt to have two Mo’s! 😉

  • Kelin Blab

Dannon you are right….Pitchford was the last one as far as I know too. At this point, I would love to add another 2011 kid and one that could help now and long term. This kid is as built as Gary Harris and as good a shooter minus the stars and the indiana zip code. Not ruling out Harris but I know that is the immediate reaction of some…..

  • kentuckyHOOSIER

Well maybe i didnt mean ” true post ” . But imo we need a good big guy . It seems ctc thought that with Guy and that didnt work out . And for the last 3 yrs we have been getting destroyed under the basket . This absence has made CW play out of position and it probally wont help Zeller either .

  • Kelin Blab

We do need one for sure….however, the well could be dry for 2011.

  • Dannon Brown

I was really hoping to see pitchford come to IU……. He is like a good medium between Watford and VO…… VO hops, but seems to be a better scorer but not quite the scorer Watford is….. I think he would have been a good addition. I really would have liked to seen Abraham or Yeugette last year come our way, but i am good where we are. I think the pieces are falling and we will be a serious team come 2012…

Any word on AJ hammons from Carmel ?

  • Dannon Brown

I am still on the fence there, have to figure Zeller takes up the biggets body because of his size and that puts Pritch and Elston in a better spot to grab boards and such. Or Pritch eats up the big body and at that point Cody has the size advantage.

I am all for a combo guard coming to IU, but can we afford to give a scholarship out? I only ask because we are full for the 2012-13 class, yet we are still recruiting in that class. If we do offer this guy a scholarship, wouldnt that take away a scholarship from an already committed recruit in our 2012 class (i.e. kevin ‘yogi’ ferrell, hanner perea, peter jurkin, ron patterson)?

  • Anonymous

We are not recruiting him anymore it’s unlikely he’ll come here plus with zeller and jurkn coming we do not need him.

  • Anonymous

220 pound with less than 3% body fat, he has to have some muscle on him. I think Crean should definitely take a look at him in a game before he pulls the trigger. To me, he sounds as if he is a similar player to VO. But, I do think Crean should search JUCO for a big man down low (and is for sure going to be ruled eligible).

  • 11th and Done (Dunn)

IMO, If “The Pritch” keeps up his defensive play I think he will start at the 5, and Zeller at the 4, with Watford at the 3 or more likely backing Zeller at the 4. If “The Pritch” regresses again, it will be Zeller at 5 and Watford at 4.

  • kentuckyHOOSIER

Are you talking about Hammons ? And Zeller is a 4 , and needs to bulk up . and jurkin might be best redshirting .

  • HoosierDavey

Completely agree. We are showing this year that we need all the quality players we can get as soon as possible. If the staff thinks he will help, go get him if you can.

  • Dannon Brown

I pretty much agree with you here, but i am hoping the Pritch stays and we will see Wat at the 3 and Cody at 4 with Pritch…. Elston as the next big in line. If DE can pick up his Def he can be a good player, the kid can score if he needs to.

  • kentuckyHOOSIER

Hey ive been ok with Pritchards play at moments .And with that kind of play that line up dosent seem too bad . but his inconsistancy is scary and the way he collects fouls ….Im not sure

  • Anonymous

Yes, we are not recruiting him anymore, at least that is what ITH e-mailed me and if you look he is not on the recruiting board.

  • kentuckyHOOSIER

Ive got a weird feeling that some players might not be back next year and we might have another scholarship or two .

  • kentuckyHOOSIER

Ok , thanks Ive been asking about him for a couple of weeks . I wonder why we lost interest ?

  • Bryan

Well, if you cannot grab a big man in this class, getting a physically imposing guard isn’t that bad an option, as long as he’s not too raw.

The post says he came over from Nigeria in August, but is there any indication how long this kid has been playing organized basketball?

  • Anonymous

The one I see leaving is Bobby Capobianco because it does not look like he will get playing time at all with Zeller, Elston, Pritch, and Watford. I know we are losing rivers but this doesn’t help free up a scholarship for a new recruit for next year let alone a gary harris or jeremy hollowell.

  • Anonymous

I have heard about a JuCo forward Demario Hines. What do you guys know about him coming in?

  • Dannon Brown

he is averaging 6pts 7reb and 2 blocks per game……errr that was as frosh…. soph year he is 12, 9 and 3.5 respectively. wouldnt be a bad guy to look at. supposedly athletic but at 6’8 he better be strong too… could be a lesser version of mbakwe.

  • Dannon Brown

he is averaging 17pts per game so he has to have some scoring prowess.

  • DanTheMan

    Newsflash! THIS system isn’t working.

  • Anonymous

How serious are we towards him?

  • Anonymous

Is it the system or the players?

  • Awesome, just what we need; another guard…..

  • Kelin Blab

One of his teammates is also former IU 2011 recruit Jeremiah Davis…

  • Anonymous

If this kid is equal to Victor Oladipo or Will Sheehey (both three-star athletic combo guards) would it be a good get? Absolutely. I won’t guess Crean’s evaluating skills. If he thinks this kid could help the program, I hope he can get Maurice to IU.

  • LTTelamon

Crean seemingly never stops recruiting – for all we know, this is a backup to a backup to a backup plan.

  • InTheMtns

If Watford plays the 3 spot next year then he is going to have to develop some quickness over the off season because right now he can’t guard the 3 spot.

  • Dannon Brown

It is the players in the system……. keep in mind CTC really only has half of what he wants/needs. Given his time here he has recruited well but he has also just grabbed some bodies. IMO if he comes in under different circumstances he doesnt grab capo, def not pritch or Roth. VO and Sheehey are the kind of players he is looking for and for the foreseeable future he is now getting those players…. Guys who can drive and create. He didnt have all that success in the Big East with a broken system.

  • Dannon Brown

You cant come into this situation and create a new system for a 3 year period while you try to recruit the kids you want. You teach the system to these players so there is a core by the time the right players show up…. those right players are VO, Sheehey…… Etherington, Bus, Yogi. This system will prove itself over the next 2 seasons.

  • Anonymous

It means that someone besides a certian Sr will be leaving the program this year.

  • Glawton12

I have no idea why IU is looking into a “combo guard” for the 2011 class, but I think that UCLA and USC showing interest is probably a good sign. Those schools aren’t in an area that I’d describe as short on talent, so I don’t think they’d be giving him a look if he didn’t really have something more to offer than your typical 3-star recruit. Why go all the way to West Virginia otherwise?

  • Anonymous

I’m not sure Elston needs to add strength as much as he needs to add maturity & awareness.

  • Anonymous

I wasn’t impressed with anything I ever saw on tape from Hammons. My lasting impression of him was the tape of Jeff Howard using him.

  • Anonymous

If Mo were to be allowed an extra year (and that isn’t going to happen because of the amount of time he has played,) there isn’t an additional scholarship, his would count against the available amount for one more season.

  • IU_Fan_99

was watching the IU v Duke game from 2002 last night on BTN… can we find another Jared Odle?

  • defendtherock

Are you all ready for our national championship tomorrow night? I have felt more confident about this team in the past, but I just have a feeling we will be celebrating tomorrow night.
