A quick update on Cincinnati Aiken’s Aaron Thomas

  • 06/10/2010 9:14 pm in

Aaron Thomas, a 6-4, four-star guard from Aiken High School in Cincinnati, is one of the top prospects Indiana expects at this weekend’s Elite Camp in Bloomington.

The Elite Camp, which is closed to the media and the public, will take place on Saturday and Sunday.

Tim Johnson, one of Thomas’ coaches on the Queen City Prophets, told Inside the Hall on Thursday night that the Cincinnati native is looking forward to the weekend.

“He loves coming to Bloomington,” Johnson said. “He likes Coach Crean. He definitely loves the new facilities. He’s always looking forward to competition. He’s pretty excited.”

After Thomas told a group of assembled media at last month’s adidas May Classic that Indiana had offered a scholarship, there were later conflicting reports that an offer had not been officially extended by the IU staff.

Johnson, however, believes the offer is indeed on the table.

“It’s my understanding that he he has an offer from Indiana,” he said.

Thomas, who averaged 22.1 points per game as a junior at Aiken and was named the Cincinnati Metro Athletic Conference Player of the Year, does not appear to be any closer to a decision than he was a month ago.

“He’ll definitely wait until July,” Johnson said.

In case you missed it, here’s the video interview with Thomas from last month’s adidas May Classic:

There's just no way Crean would bail on one big ten school for another big ten school… you don't see head coaches transfer within the same conference very often. I'm sure his buyout is huge, and MSU couldn't really offer him any more cash than what he makes now at IU.

Everything that I've heard is that MSU will more than likely either promote from within, or go after the Dayton head coach.

    What would suck…..

    Aaron Thomas loves IU
    Aaron Thomas loves Coach Crean
Aaron Thomas is at IU's Elite Camp
Aaron Thomas says he wants a school where basketball is the main thing…IU
Aaron Thomas was the only player at the May Classic in bloomington sporting an IU shirt during warm ups….

Aaron Thomas picks another school other than IU…now that would suck and at that point I would not believe ANY recruits words until they are on campus warming up in an IU uniform. Come on Aaron you don't have to wait til July…

Could Aaron Thomas be Jordan Crawford?

  • jpniles

I agree. I love Crean and I love IU fans, but it seems a little egotistical to imagine that Crean is up for that job. Plus, after the fallout of Izzo leaving, we might have a better program.

With that being said, I would think about crying if Izzo left MState. He has done so much for the game and the Big Ten. I have given this a lot of thought. I think that the negative on Big Ten basketball outweighs the immediate positives it would have on IU basketball.

Izzo, Ryan, Williams, Coach K, Boeheim are all guys that need to stay in NCAAB for the sake of NCAAB!

This is off topic, but I have a serious proposal for IU Football which needs IMMEDIATE ATTENTION! Just heard the news on ESPN about the USC Juniors and Seniors football players. They can transfer ANYWHERE and play immediately! I am serious! AD Glass MUST ORDER Coach Lynch to fly out to LA today and not to come home until each and every Junior and Senior on the USC Football team has either agreed to come to IU or has enrolled in another school! This is an unprecedented opportunity!! Guarantee them that they will begin the season as a starter if they will come, both sides of the ball, offense and defense, no exceptions, but especially defense! We have a great group of players, many from Indiana, they could give up their scholarships, become preferred walk-ons, FOREVER earn the LOVE of the Hoosier Nation, play if they earn the playing time, and re-get their scholarships as the USC recruits graduate or leave or by having fewer recruits in 2011! Can you imagine the IMPACT on Indiana football if we got 5-15 or more players from USC! At IU we can GUARANTEE that each one WILL START RIGHT NOW, NO “YOU HAVE TO EARN IT FIRST”! Obviously, if they play poorly, they don’t keep the starting job. Very few other good teams will guarantee that they will start. Let’s do it! This is not “pie-in-the-sky”, this is a serious proposal. It is bold, no doubt about it! That is why AD Glass must order it! Coach Lynch will/would never do it on his own.

  • Uncle Joey

    I definitely see it.

  • BaseballBuc

Actually, I think with his size and scorer mentality, I can see a Manny Harris type player. He may never turn out to be that good. But I can see that comparison

  • IUfanPurduePhD

    I've got my fingers crossed.

The best scenario for 2011 basketball recruits is a class of 3. One of the 3 is Austin Etherington. He is a Hoosier! He is recruiting others for IU. So we ask him to wait until spring to officially sign. Then we go after Zeller, and if he says no or waits too long, we get McGary with one scholarship. Then we go after J Davis, and if he says no or waits too long, we get Aaron Thomas with the oversign scholarship. If we have all 3 Etherington, Zeller and J Davis, that means that 2 players on the 2010-11 team must go-to the NBA, transfer, etc. after the season ends in the spring. In that case, I would actually like a 4 person class if both Davis and Zeller say yes with Etherington, including Aaron Thomas. That would require 3 leave after the end of next season before their eligibility expires. I know, that is harsh to the kids.

  • IUfanPurduePhD

We need Mike Leach at the helm of your crazy train (although I understand he's more of a pirate ship guy)…

  • Outoftheloop

It is crazy ONLY IF YOU DO NOT ACT ON MY PLAN! Within 2-3 months IU Football would be a legitimate top 25 Good football team, and it is totally legal with the NCAA! Does ANYONE else have a better plan that might accomplish this?

  • Outoftheloop

Yes very similar to Jordan, only more mature than Jordan going into his senior year in HS, but the same talent level.

  • Outoftheloop

I agree, but I think that Jordan Crawford is better than Manny Harris, it looks like the NBA scouts agree with me.

  • IUfanPurduePhD

I meant crazy as in “like a fox,” not as in “get that guy a straightjacket” … and I know there's only about a 1% chance that we'd ever land Mike Leach ($$$), but I still think he's crazy (again, like a fox) enough to take on the challenge of a cellar dweller like IU (if you're man enough to take on UTex and OkU at an also-ran, then you've got stones).

  • Outoftheloop

Who is going to pay the $3 million Buy-Out, Plus the $3 million salary? The taxpayers of Michigan, who have been hammered by this recession? Go ask them!

  • Outoftheloop

And tail, horns, and pitchfork. He has the complete outfit, he says his Dad gave it to him!

  • Outoftheloop

Sounds like Tom Crean to me. I like the guy! You don't shred your integrity and expect others to believe in you.

  • MillaRed

I'm not exactly pining for the guy either. He was brought up by another. My
point is I think we will have at least 2 more kids sign on for the 2011
class and something has to give. Kaminski is 2012 and yes there is a ton of
in state talent there to choose from.

  • Outoftheloop

I actually agree with you on Mike Leach. After this season, if things do not go well, I think he should be Glass' #1 option.

  • runelord

I don't think Crean is going anywhere either. He seems to be in the same mold as Izzo as they need a challenge to stay motivated and keep from getting stale with their current position. There isn't any way possible that MSU would be more of a challenge to rebuld, currently, than IU.

Also, just my two cents, if Thomas and the kid from Chesterton want to sign, then we should go ahead and accept. Not quite sure about Davis and the last kid from Chesterton that came to IU ended up pretty good.

  • Kelin Blab

If there is one frosh I do not worry about it is jordan hulls. Saw him alot in High School and in big games that he has proven himself against what seems to be more talented players. The comforting feeling about Hulls is this…He knows who he is, he knows his strengths, and weaknesses and he figures it out quick.

Saw Hulls v Teague his senior year….South won by 20 plus on the road, despite all the hype around Pike, Teague, and how short and slow Jordy is. Trust me, he will be that coverdale type of kid…..

  • Kelin Blab

The issue with this scenario for 2011 is….You have one kid, Thomas, who wants to decide in July/Now….You have another kid, Davis, who is waiting for the right time and feeling. If that feeling is Mich St, KY, or Tennessee what would you do if “Thomas the Train” has taken off for WVU?

Crean/IU would be screwed and pissed…..I would definitely be upset if we missed out on both.

I just made that Thomas the train up by the way. That is two nicknames for AT, along with AThom bomb…all rights reserved to IUfanPurduePHD for that one.

  • iubase

The tone here is improving. We have some good candidates coming through. I personally like this kid a lot. Athletic 6' 4″ and growing with good outside shot – could develop into another Creek and you can never have enough of that. Also think that if Michigan state looses Izzo that will help recruit guys like Dawson from Gary and the other athletic bigs that Izzo nurtured up there.

  • Outoftheloop

OK, I agree. Take Thomas now, or in July, as soon as we can. Will McGray wait with us for Zeller or Davis to decide, or do we need to go for him before October? I actually like Thomas better than Davis right now. Two months ago I liked Davis better.

  • Kelin Blab

The difference in McGary waiting is, he didn't play much last season due to injury and currently only has one offer from PU but they have laid off of him because of potential grade issues. THose things buys him and IU, Zeller time to wait and see what Cody does. We have time with My Man Mitch.

I agree two months ago I was all aboard with J.Davis, but I think what has changed is, we have heard from and more about Thomas and he has made the difference. Yes we want some good news, but not the david williams type.

The buzz that did surround Davis is fading fast, due to Thomas, his falling rankings (which don't mean a ton), and the 2012 class where I could easily choose 4 players I would want ahead of JD.

  • Kelin Blab

JM23….hate to tell you this, Tom Pritchard will have his senior night at IU without a doubt. If it was going to happen it would have been done already….

  • IUfanPurduePhD

That would solve a lot of our problems (and help us not wait around for JDavis; grab A-Thom before he becomes an even bigger commodity).

  • IUfanPurduePhD

Yes, let's not make our future leading scorer (after Mo Creek graduates/goes to NBA) into a child's cartoon. (Although I realize I've made him into an unholy weapon of destruction and Armageddon, but if the U of Miami can be the Hurricanes, then AT can be the AThom Bomb … or, at least his dunks and 3 point baskets can be AThom bombs).

  • marcusgresham

Has to get his grades up first, though. That “no one on the team is below 2.9” statement should be a wake-up message to McGary if he wants to be a Hoosier (but if he does get the grades up I'm right there with you–snatch him up!)

  • marcusgresham

Start the rumor now—Bob Knight takes the Michigan St. job!
    (yes I'm kidding)

  • marcusgresham

    I think so, too.

  • marcusgresham

I don't know, Leach might actually be more “space ship” than “pirate ship”

  • marcusgresham

Nah, don't make Pritchard transfer, just improve both programs at the same time and put him at tight end.

  • UMAD25

IU Football is one of the sorriest congregations in Bloomington. I'm a student and I hold season tickets to both basketball and football, so you can't say I'm an IU hater (born and raised in Bloomington, too) but really man they are terrible. You have to be realistic we really suck. Coach Lynch is the man for taking us to a bowl game but if Indiana football ever wants to be anything they need to fire him. I don't see how he is our coach anyway since Ball State fired him first. I guess if I'm going to say anything about basketball on here it's that TP needs to transfer and we need a 2012 class of Perea and DSR. GOODNIGHT AND GOODLUCK.

  • Outoftheloop

So let's embrace Aaron Thomas as a new IU recruit for 2011 as soon as possible! Maybe this weekend.

  • Outoftheloop

2012 class of Perea, Jurkin, Patterson, DSR and Yogi.

  • marcusgresham

So, “Aaron” the side of caution and sign him now if he wants it?

I'm not sure I wouldn't rather have him than Davis, anyway. He has a spot and he plays it. A lot of times “combo” means “does a little of this and a little of that, but not all of anything.”

  • Kelin Blab

Just don't make Jordan run the bleachers cause he might leave….

  • IUfanPurduePhD
  • Outoftheloop

Maybe the coaches ask him to hold off for a month?

  • Outoftheloop

    I agree with you.

  • Outoftheloop

    I agree with you.

  • Outoftheloop

    Good point!

  • Outoftheloop

    Good point!

  • Outoftheloop

    Good point!

  • Outoftheloop

Hey, Daniel Moore is the ONLY really TOUGH GUY on our roster! Sometimes you need a guy to stick his face right in the opposition! Danny has NO FEAR! He is a very good walk-on.
