The Morning After: Michigan State

  • 03/03/2008 11:02 am in

Drew NeitzelThere are two ways to view yesterday’s debacle at Michigan State, and both depend on interpretation.

The first interpretation relies on the notion that IU has some hand in everything that happens to them on the basketball court. As a rule, this is true, but there are exceptions — a team gets inconceivably hot, for example. Which is what happened Sunday. The second interpretation is that, for at least one day, Michigan State became an unbeatable, impossible foe, caught in a shooting flurry that took off in the first minute and lasted until the 40th. This requires the idea that no matter what IU team showed up yesterday, even one performing at the 99th percentile of the Hoosiers’ ability, Michigan State would have trounced them.

As antithetical as that idea is, it was hard to watch yesterday and think it wasn’t true. Observe:

Both teams took the same number of shots, but look at the outcome: Michigan State made 37 while IU made 27. Michigan State shot a 71.3 effective field goal percentage, which is insane for anyone, let alone for a team that averages 53 percent a game. IU shot 50 percent. On 70 possessions, MSU scored 104 points, a rate of 1.5 points per possession. The Hoosiers scored 1.1. By all offensive measures, IU performed to its season averages. Michigan State performed out of this effing world. What, exactly, can be done about that?

— Better defense would be a good start, of course. Something to consider here is that Dan Dakich has said he’s leaving the offense alone, but plans on tinkering with the defense. No amount of “tinkering” is going to be responsible for giving up 1.5 ppp, but at the same time IU seemed to be peaking defensively a few weeks ago. If the last few games are any indication — especially that shootout with, of all teams, Northwestern — the defense is now regressing.

Even against a really hot shooting team, the defense was exposed yesterday. Transition buckets came way too easily. Dunks were too frequent. Pick and rolls were defended so unsoundly, I was reminded of the team’s first few games this season. Michigan State outran IU, out schemed them, and made the Hoosiers’ defense look as bad as it has all year. Let’s hope the defensive ugliness is an aberration, and not the rule under Dakich. Because 1.5 ppp against is the fastest possible way to get sent home in March.

— Still, it feels like there isn’t much to write about this game, because it was an aberration. It was. It had to be. Think about it: After the end of the first half, Michigan State was on pace for 120 points. 120! In a 40 minute basketball game. To over analyze this, or proclaim this team dead, would be to ignore just how ridiculous yesterday was. If it happens again, fine. Call the season. But in the meantime, the wise approach here is to laugh this game off, suck up the likelihood that the Big Ten crown isn’t headed our way (and really, who cares that much about winning the Big Ten?), and refocus for March. One torrential Michigan State performance, no matter how off the charts, doesn’t automatically spell doom. Not yet, anyway.

I figured at the beginning of the year that we would loose to Michigan State at Breslin. I agree with statement made that the Wisconson game is the game we really messed on. If we would of won we would be in a three-way tie right now. I was just disappointed with the lack of effort by the players and the fact that Dackich is not “coaching” the team…..or he doesn't have control over them or whatever. I guess all we can do now is hope Ohio State beats purdue, so at least they don't get any of the action.

Crawford is a good player. I don't see how anyone could disagree with that. He is a freshman….we can't expect him to preform like a senior. When (or if) Crawford is a junior and bassett is a senior they will be the best backcourt in the big ten. Shaheen Holloway would of been a nice addtion to that backcourt, but I suppose we better just take this one step at a time.

I hope we come out alright in the Big Ten Tournament. I have a bad feeling if we have to play Illionois, but we will see. It would be a great accomplishment if we could get our act together and win in Indy. At least this seaon would be a total waste with this much talent.

Coaching: we need to hire someone outside the IU family. We need the best coach out there. Alford can stay where he is at and Dackich can head back to the “basketball operations” office. I liked Sampson, myself, but it was a mistake to hire him in the first place. All we need is a coach that will A: Keep the players where they are. B: Hold on to the recruits. C: Run an offense D: Make the team defensively sound.

  • The problem is, do you want to potentially ruin a redshirt for these guys?

Granted, I haven't been able to watch the games in the earlier part of the season, but if they haven't played yet, then why put them out there now?

  • My guess is that Eli can't do much on a broken wrist. The coaching staff has said, time and time again, that McGee is a 3. They don't want him focusing on anything but being a 3.

There's a log jam at the 3. McGee is not the answer.

Ellis really has been a solid contributor all year. He may be the one guy on the team (besides DJ and Armon) who understands his role. “Send him on his way”?

Crawford is a (potential) stud. Surely the coaching staff recognizes his tendancy to fall asleep out there, and that problem should be addressed. But absent mental lapses, he can fill the bucket (just can't hardly dunk).

Thomas had a great game against MSU in Bloomington with DJ out. He has contributed to this team.

I understand some frustration, especially after a loss like that, but getting rid of these guys would be a huge mistake. How about coaching them? The “handle with care” tag that this team has had the last couple weeks needs to be removed. DD should focus on areas where this team can still vastly improve…all stemming from discipline and intensity.

Winning the conference should be the No. 1 goal every year. That IU hasn't done it since 2002 is sad. That we (maybe) won't be in a position to do it again for a few years is sad.

I hope y'all were joking. You probably were, but I'm having a hard time recognizing humor right now.

He runs just fine…what is everyone else's excuse though? I know DJ is hurting. It shows in the way he runs. As for the rest of them, WTF? Play ball…both ends of the court. Better yet, don't play unless you play defense. That defensive attitude won us 20 games last year with less talent.

Good work, though, gumshoe. Next time check the thread hierarchy.
