Way to go IU staff! he will be a great fit.

  • Christian Hamm

WOW!!!!! That is awesome! Welcome to Hoosier Nation!

  • HoosierHeel

LET’S GO!!! Fantastic first commit for Archie Miller! So excited that he is onboard! Now just to see how soon he will be on board …

EDIT: our front court just got a lot better for next season. Just goes to show how wise it is to save a scholarship or two each season. Go meet Clif Marshall young man. Pumped!

  • Bnkepner00

Twitter says he is reclassifying to 2017 and will come to campus after summer and will redshirt this year

  • N71

Great news. He should prepare to have a blast both as a player and a student. Huge for IU, huge for Race.

  • N71

Saw the same thing. How does one just skip their senior year at the last second?

  • iugradmark

Where did you see redshirt quote

  • Bnkepner00

They said he would be in summer school to finish up school credits

  • N71

Makes sense. Do we have a scholarship available for 2017?

  • Fifer39

We do I believe. Is he allowed to redshirt? I thought there had to be a good reason for that to be granted, eg injury?

  • N71

I would have thought so but new staff, new tactics I guess.

  • Fifer39

Guess so. I don’t really get it from Thompson’s perspective though. Unless he’s planning on being a 4 year player not sure why he wouldn’t start earning pt this year.

  • unclekerfuffle

    Welcome, Race!

This is just the beginning of big things to come. Glad you have chosen to be part of it.

  • THRyan

Could someone please explain the advantage of reclassifying and redshirting? I could understand one or the other, but I am not seeing the reason for both. Has this ever happened before somewhere else?

  • KraigIU

This is a very nice pickup especially considering the lack of quality big men in the 2018 class. The reclassifying worries me a little, not sure he’s quite ready to contribute and missing the whole summer would put him even farther behind, but if he is going to to redshirt then that’s huge. Spending an entire season with the team practicing and training should given him a big leg up going into next season even if he’s not playing in competitive games.

  • Mr.Bailey

I don’t get that either, maybe we’ll get an explanation soon. My son will be a senior this year. It would be very difficult to give up his last year on the team.

  • sam

I’m almost certain he and Coach Miller discussed his plan… Great job Coach Miller and staff

  • IURob1997

I wonder this too but I saw the #1 player in 2018 is looking to reclassify and play for USC, Arizona or Duke.

  • I believe he’s redshirting.

  • He gets an extra year of development and then comes out much stronger in 2018 than he would have if he’d stayed in high school and started as a true freshman in 2018. Yes, we don’t have him for 2017, but I’ll trust Archie and his staff to determine whether or not Race as a freshman in 2017 is more valuable than Race as a redshirt freshman in 2018.

  • We do, yes. Archie was holding onto one when Gelon left, likely for just this kind of development.

  • KraigIU

My thinking is that it might be better basketball wise to spend a season in strength & conditioning and practicing at a D1 school would do more for him than playing another season of HS basketball.

Also, at the end of his redshirt junior year he should have his degree. Depending on how things develop it’ll give him a chance to grad transfer if he feels the need to or would get a year of his masters in that’s paid for.

  • IURob1997

No any one can redshirt for a season. Its to get a 2nd redshirt year there has to be a medical reason

  • THRyan

Thanks. Yeah the more I think about it, I think the coaching staff must have big, big plans for this kid. They want to get him on campus and make him a cornerstone of the program in the following 4 years.

  • IU Cal 1809

Very nice pick up!!! Having him learn from the likes of CH and JM day in day out is going to be huge for his growth as a player. The kid is going to be are very own Ethan Happ.

  • Donnie Vick

If he has committed for this year, will he sign a letter soon? Will we hear from Archie about his being redshirted? I’d love to hear his thoughts. It seems to me we could use a 6’8 body this year, even if he’s not quite ready to play heavy minutes.

  • Great news. He looks like a great cornerstone to build upon. Good start and hopefully a momentum builder on the recruiting front.

  • kurk81

I wonder what the rules are for declaring a redshirt year. Is it possible for him to ‘redshirt’ and not play until well into the season and then start playing in an emergency situation (someone gets hurt, Race is ready)? Of course, he would give up the redshirt year, but could he be an emergency solution if needed?

  • Fifer39

Thanks Rob, I didn’t realise that. I guess it’s not used very often on a discretionary basis as it uses up a scholly.

  • Outoftheloop

A redshirt year is all up to the player and the coach. The NCAA just says you have 5 years to play 4 years. So at anytime the Coach and player can decide to “burn” the current redshirt year by playing in a game. Then the player has 3 more years to play in a 4 year span.

  • Outoftheloop

He can not sign the NLOI but he can sign for the financial aid/scholarship.

  • Outoftheloop

    WI uses it frequently.
