Kentucky Hoopfest: Ron Patterson

Broad Ripple (IN) guard Ron Patterson is one of Indiana’s top recruiting targets for the 2012 class. The versatile guard, who is one of the better defenders you’ll find anywhere, talked to Inside the Hall and The Herald-Times on Saturday at the Kentucky Hoopfest about a potential move to point guard, the possibility of playing with Jeremy Hollowell in college, the origin of his nickname and more. Watch and listen to Patterson’s comments in the embedded media player below:

  • hoopJunkie

I also heard that Buss and AE were close friends. Couldn’t hurt!

  • BaseballBuc

The 2012 class is like going into a candy factory. So many great options.

    Patterson-
    +VERY athletic
    +good defender
    +quick
    +tough
    +can shoot
Sounds like a player I want on my team.

  • Diesel

Defense and AAU? Sign your letter of intent right here son. Bringing Jeremy with you? No problem, here's another letter.

Anyone know what kind of relationship Hicks has had with IU in the past? Would hate to see Hollowell and Buss headed to OSU. Can't anyone in Ohio play ball?

  • Ben_522

Zeller just picked up UNC offer

  • Evan

I really want him, but there is no way he plays pg.

  • BaseballBuc

When I see Ron Patterson I always think that he reminds me of a former Illinois guard Chester Frazier. The difference with Ron is that he can actually score.

  • Luke72

Great to see a player enjoying playing and improving. How exciting to have such great homegrown talent. How can we not end up with some great players in the next 2 years!!

  • Kelin Blab

    A few things….

+ Hard not to like a kid that smiles through an entire interview
+ Defense and AAU…what is that?
+ Crean loves the Combo. At some point he is going to start recruiting combo centers, work on your handle Cody
+ Buss just threw a wrench into my 2012 plans, if he has any influence on Hollowell geez…
(GYogi, G Buss G DSR F Perea C Jurkin) Now tell me who will Hollowell bump off this list?

  • Kelin Blab

    Speaking of 2012 guys….

Mitch McGary now a 2012'er….his new point guard is ….Nadir Tharpe! @ Brewster Academy. The plot thickens

  • http://twitter.com/iu77bu81 Pete Oren

Once someone verbally commits, it should get really interesting. Austin working on Cody, Bus working on Jeremy, people would love to play with Yogi. Hopefully soon the dominoes will begin to fall.

  • GFDave

You're saying McGary is going to prep school at Brewster? Do you have a link?

The 2012 class is just so, so stacked. There just isn't room for even close to everybody we'd like. I'd like to think that the odds are in our favor of getting a great class, not just a good one, but a great one.

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

I wonder if his interest in IU and CTC had anything to do with him going to prep school?

“We're recruiting one big man in this class (Zeller) but in 2012 there's a definite opportunity for you to fit in as an IU recruit”???

Seem possible or is this just presumptuous?

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

I really, really like players like Patterson with that strength. I liked Eric Gordon for the same reason, because he was strong.

My wish list hasn't changed much: in wish list order for me
    2011 – Zeller, Thomas, Davis
2012 – Perea, Patterson, Ferrell, Jurkin, DSR, Harris, Hollowell, McGary, Tharpe, Kaminski, Marrero, Hammons.

How many freaking scholarships could IU have available for 2012? I'd be fine with a couple more transfers sitting here looking at this class!

  • Kelin Blab

You could be right…..it is a good move for McGary and probably would earn him some more offers. In 2012, to follow a commit by Zeller with McGary….although I prefer Jurkin

  • BaseballBuc

Cody Zeller just picked up an offer from North Carolina. We're doomed.

  • Kelin Blab

There is a good side for IU still BaseballBuc. UNC is coming in late in the game and are not coming off a national championship season either. So it isn't like Duke offering (lets pray they don't)…I think IU is in good shape still. If I look at the players we have lost that are considered your 4-5 star guys it is irving to Duke, Selby to Kansas, and Teague to KY…..all programs that are winning now….can't say the same for UNC.

  • BaseballBuc

Also for some reason Cody just seems real low key and humble. This could also benefit IU because he wouldn't be in the limelight as much. I agree with you and I still have some hope for Cody because Tom Crean has thrown everything except the kitchen sink at him and JD recruiting wise. I'm not here to say he is a make or break recruit but it's getting close

  • Uncle Joey

Combine that with the fact that UNC already signed James McAdoo for 2011, the 5 star power forward (6'8″)… although that may not end up mattering much since Cody will probably play the 5 in college. Regardless, UNC went 5-11 in conference play last season. They were absolutely stacked with quality players and they couldn't do anything with it. I don't think any team did less with more talent last year than UNC.

Its pure speculation on my part, but I believe IU, Butler, and now UNC are probably in his top 3.

  • Diesel

Interesting that the 2012 offers keep rolling out – 6'7″ F TJ Warren from NC, 7'0″ C Kaleb Tarczewski from Maryland and 6'9″ F Matt Costello from Michigan. Better get some verbals coming soon Indiana boys.

And for real, what the heck was UNC waiting on….either you want a guy or you don't. If I'm CZ, I'm a bit disrespected despite how humble he his.

  • Kelin Blab

Especially when you have a zeller on the team….kind of a slap in the zeller face

  • IUfanPurduePhD

Would we need Yogi AND DSR? I feel like they're an either/or, not a both/and, esp. if we get Buss. Yogi, Buss, Hollowell, Perea, Jurkin. That's a solid starting five in 2015.

And looking at the scholarship numbers, if we use the oversign for 2011 (which we most certainly will), we'll only have 4 scholarships for 2012, not 5 (that is, of course, excluding a transfer or Creek going pro)… so your list only gets smaller.

  • IUfanPurduePhD

I have no idea how Yogi, Buss, Hollowell, Perea, and Jurkin wouldn't be the best class in the nation (excluding Cheatapari over at sUcK).

  • Kelin Blab

DSR is similar to Davis to me …..a big combo guard. At some point IU will have to get a kid that is more point than combo. At least in one class. Therefore Yogi and DSR isn't a big deal. Now Kaminski could throw a good twist into this entire thing if he were to commit to IU in the next few weeks. He was on campus recently and plays with alot of these guys.

  • IUfanPurduePhD

I haven't seen much (if any) video of Kaminski, although I've heard good things … but at 6'7″, he's pretty much the same position as Hollowell, and I'd rather have Hollowell.

  • Kelin Blab

Kenny K is a power forward. A shooting and rebounding power forward apparently. I have no footage either, so I am going to go on what I have read. At some point we have to replace Derek Elston with a guy who will do the dirty work and knock some people around..

  • BaseballBuc

Another twist would be grades. I heard that Indiana wasn't going to offer until he got his grades straightened out. A lot of players that have trouble in the academics dept. go to prep school.

  • marcusgresham

Yeah, they can, but they leave for Miami.

  • marcusgresham

I wouldn't say “doomed” by any stretch of the imagination. Simple math still shows that it's only a 64 mile drive from Washington to Bloomington.

Not only that, but I'm pretty sure I've heard some reference to the previous coaching regimes at IU being major factors in the older Zellers not ending up there.

Also don't give up on AE's power of persuasion. He may be the best recruiter IU has at this point.

  • N71

If you’re one of these 2012 guys why would you want to go anywhere but Indiana or Purdue if you can get all your classmates to come with you? This class is as good as there has EVER been and could easily compete for a national title if not two. The 2011 Indiana guys would be crazy too leave to an out of state school. They will be looking back and thinking I should have stayed and played with all the 2012 studs. Now the 2012 guys have a championship at Indiana and here I am stuck at some other school away from my home. You would be kicking yourself. On top of that by being an Indiana kid playing for IU you are loved for the rest of your life by the entire state. You have to be crazy if Indiana University isn’t your first choice.

  • IUfanPurduePhD

A 6'7″, 180-pound power forward … you might be able to get away with that in the Horizon League, but I don't know if that would fly in the B10. I figure he'll be a small forward at the next level (barring a growth spurt). Elston was 6'8″ and 220 his senior year… that's a 40 pound difference. I guess KK has 2 full years, but 20 pounds per year is a tall order for a high school kid. If he's going to do “dirty work and knock some people around,” he'll need to put on that weight though.

  • Jshull

Williams is not throwing out offers here and there as he seems to pick his spots. He can afford to do so.

UNC lost 2 bigs when the Wear twins decided to transfer.

One would wonder if there are some chemistry problems with UNC if they can only go 5-11 in ACC with their talent. I've heard nothing specific, but as I said it just makes you wonder.

  • Outoftheloop

My order for 2011 is Etherington, Zeller, BJ Young and A Thomas. That is a great 4 man class. I like all of your 2012 picks, but isn't Tharpe in 2011?

  • Kelin Blab

If that happens, IU will make a 2nd round NCAA tourney appearance…..

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

Yeah, you are right. In that case I would just add Tharpe onto the back of my 2011 class.

  • millzy32

It's all up to Cody and his parents on this one. Does he want to stay close to home or not? Does he want to play with his bro or not? Does he want to make his own way like both of his brothers did?

Be your own person Cody and blaze a trail to IU.

  • millzy32

They won a National Title the year before last, I think they'll adjust. We should only have such problems.
