Romeo Langford court, which is a part of the new Kevin Hammersmith Memorial Park in New Albany, will officially open on Saturday, July 14.

The court is named after the 2018 Mr. Basketball and Indiana signee and will host several games on its opening day including rematches of the 2017-18 Floyd County Elementary Basketball League boys’ and girls’ championship games, an open run for local players and an alumni game between Floyd County rivals Floyd Central and New Albany.

Tomorrow’s festivities at the court and in the park will be open to the public and will run from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Langford is expected to attend.

In May, a ceremony was held to officially announce that the court would be named in Langford’s honor.

“So many people in Floyd County have enjoyed watching Romeo play over the past four years, and naming the court in his honor is a way for our community to look back and say ‘thank-you’ to him,” Steve LaDuke, vice president of the county parks board, said in May. “Every kid that steps on any outdoor court should not only try to emulate Romeo’s actions on the court, but also his demeanor and kindness off-the- court.”

The court is painted blue and red and features Langford’s name on the sidelines with his signature on the court. It has two adjustable goals that are regulation size.

Langford, who committed to Indiana on April 30 and recently signed his National Letter of Intent with the Hoosiers, is the state’s fourth all-time leading scorer.

He led the Bulldogs to the 2016 Class 4A state championship and was also named a McDonald’s All-American, the Gatorade player of the year in Indiana, a Jordan Brand All-Star and a Naismith All-American.

Langford is expected to be one of the nation’s top freshmen next season in college basketball and has been on campus in Bloomington for the last month.
