We conclude our look at the top players in the state of Indiana today with the class of 2012. Only three of our top 15 prospects remain uncommitted. If you have any questions about the rankings, feel free to address them in the comments.

15. RJ Hunter, Indianapolis Pike: A great long-range shooter who can knock down shots off the dribble or the catch, Hunter is committed to play for his father at Georgia State University. The 6-foot-5 wing possesses good length and quickness and is a reliable perimeter defender. Hunter can score off the bounce, and also get to the line where he knocks down free throws at a high rate. His biggest area for improvement is adding strength and bulk, which should help him to improve his defense and ability to finish in the paint.

14. DeJuan Marrero, Bowman Academy: Marrero is an undersized power forward who doesn’t let his size hold him back as a rebounder. He will crash the boards against opponents of all sizes and uses his strength, athleticism and high motor to win rebounding battles. Marrero’s relentlessness on the offensive glass earns him plenty of trips to the free throw line and second chance points in the paint. He needs to improve his perimeter skills, but there is no questioning Marrero’s hard working attitude and production on the glass.

13. Patrick Ingram, Indianapolis North Central: The Iowa-bound guard is great finisher who uses his strength, quickness and athleticism to get to the rim and score down low. The 6-foot-2 guard is also a good defender on the perimeter who uses his physicality to frustrate opponents. Ingram is a solid mid-range shooter, but has a tendency to be streaky from the perimeter and should look to improve his long-range shooting to round out his offensive game.

Delaney impressed with play of Ferrell, Lyles at Nations

by in Recruiting | August 9th, 2011

Jason Delaney is entering his first season as head coach at Indianapolis Arensal Tech where he’ll lead a talented group of returning players led by Trey Lyles. Delaney coached last season at Indianapolis Washington, which opened and closed its season with losses to Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell and Park Tudor.

With that unique perspective, Delaney is well-versed in the development and progress of both Indiana commitments and he spoke to Inside the Hall on Tuesday morning about the play of each at adidas Nations:

On Yogi Ferrell at adidas Nations:

“Yogi is a fantastic point guard. You see the improvement over the last couple of years. I coached against him twice last year and just from the sectional championship game, he’s improved even more with his ability to score, especially the pull-up jumper. But he makes the guys around him so much better and that’s what you need from your point guard. You need a leader and you need someone who makes the other players on the floor better. And I think Yogi’s definitely doing that. He’s such a strong guard, too. That makes him tough to guard because he can take contact when he gets into the lane.”

On Trey Lyles at adidas Nations:

“As a fan and his coach, it’s like being his big brother. I’m not going to say father because I’m not that old. I’m so proud of him for playing on that stage. When he got in (last night), I thought he did a great job. 12 points and six rebounds. He’s playing up against older kids and he showed that he belonged. I just hope that all transforms back at the high school level where he can make his teammates around him better like Yogi and use the experiences that he’s been blessed to do and really utilize those on the high school level.”

Yogi Ferrell shines on final night of adidas Nations

by in Recruiting | August 9th, 2011

Adidas’ final grassroots event of the summer, adidas Nations, wrapped up Monday evening at Cal State Dominguez in Carson, California in front of a national television audience on the CBS Sports Network. For Indiana fans, the broadcast was a chance to check out three of the Hoosiers’ verbal commitments — Jeremy Hollowell, Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell and Trey Lyles — for a final time until next winter.

Here are our thoughts on the individual performances of Ferrell, Lyles and Hollowell:

– Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell: Unofficial stats had the Park Tudor point guard with assist totals ranging from 14 to 19 in the USA Red 2012′s 130-108 win over USA Blue 2013 in the third place game. For most of the night, Ferrell took on the role of pure point guard by setting up teammates like Gabe York and Kaleb Tarczewski for open looks. In a sequence the announcing crew called the “pass of the week,” Ferrell darted through the lane and fired off a left-handed behind the back pass to Tarczewski for a layup. When he wasn’t setting up teammates, the future Hoosier was knocking down jump shots from the perimeter. If there was any doubt that Ferrell should be in the conversation for the country’s top floor general in the 2012 class, it was erased with his play on Monday evening.

– Trey Lyles: While the Indianapolis Tech sophomore spends a lot of time operating in the paint during the AAU and high school season, he spent a majority of the night on Monday connecting from midrange. Lyles, who is just 15 and was one of the youngest players in the event, didn’t venture much into the paint in his team’s 130-108 loss.  With the strength advantage that guys like Tarczewski and Dajuan Coleman held over him, that was probably a heady decision. It’s clear that Lyles has worked on his perimeter game all the way out to the 3-point line and when given the slightest opening, he’ll connect. Unofficial totals had the five-star forward with 14 points and six rebounds.

– Jeremy Hollowell: A late addition to the event, the Lawrence Central senior didn’t begin play until the Saturday session for the USA Blue 2012 team. Starting with a 3-pointer from NBA range, the future IU wing scored eight of his 11 points in 90-second stretch of the third quarter to help bring his team within one at 76-75. USA Blue 2012 went on to win the adidas Nations championship 114-107 over USA Red 2013. While Hollowell has been knocked in the past for drifting out of the flow of the game in stretches, he rose to the occasion for most of the summer against elite competition. That should bode well for future success in the Big Ten.

A look back at Indiana’s unprecedented recruiting run

by in Recruiting | July 27th, 2011

Those of you who follow us on Twitter (cheap plug) may have noticed a tweet last evening that proclaimed the following: “A year ago, Indiana had one verbal commitment. Since August 9, 2010, Hoosiers have picked up 11 commitments, including four 5-stars.”

In less than 12 months, the question surrounding the state of Indiana’s recruiting changed from “Can IU lock down the borders of the state once again?” to “Who will the Hoosiers land next?” It truly has been an unprecedented run of success on the recruiting trail by Tom Crean and his staff.

Here’s a look back at the significant recruiting developments since last August in chronological order:

August 9, 2010: Peter Jurkin became Indiana’s first recruit in the 2012 class when he committed on a live television broadcast at adidas Nations in Chicago. Ryan was there to catch up with Jurkin shortly after he made the pledge.

August 15, 2010: Fresh off the positive momentum of Jurkin’s commitment, the Hoosiers quickly added to the 2012 class with Broad Ripple guard Ron Patterson. Patterson says at the time of the commitment that he would like to see Lawrence Central wing Jeremy Hollowell join him in Bloomington.

September 1, 2010: Cody Zeller announced dates for his official visits. Butler drew the first straw, North Carolina was second and the Hoosiers landed Zeller’s last visit.

September 3, 2010: 2014 Bishop Luers freshman guard James Blackmon Jr. announced that he would play for Indiana before ever logging a minute of high school action. Blackmon’s father, James Sr., told Inside the Hall that Indiana was headed in the right direction.

September 19, 2010: Jeremy Hollowell says he’s impressed by the commitments of Jurkin and Patterson and adds that he believes the 2012 class is the one that will really turn things around for Indiana.
