Ferrell, Lyles will visit Bloomington this weekend

Two of the top high-major prospects in the state will be on campus this weekend as both 2012 Park Tudor point guard Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell and 2014 Indianapolis Tech forward Trey Lyles will take unofficial visits to Indiana.

Ferrell (pictured) has taken several trips to Bloomington in recent months and will do so again this weekend, according to Kyle Neddenriep of The Indianapolis Star.

The 6-10, 210-pound Lyles, a versatile forward who picked up an offer from Indiana in early August, will visit on Sunday, according to his father, Tom.

The Tech freshman is considered one of the top 25 prospects nationally by The Hoop Scoop.

2012 Recruiting Board: Post-Summer update

It’s been nearly two months since the last update of our 2012 Recruiting Board and a lot has changed in the final weeks of summer.

The Hoosiers picked up two commitments — Peter Jurkin and Ron Patterson. Guards D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera and Gary Harris narrowed their list of schools and IU made the cut for both. Yogi Ferrell (pictured) took an unofficial for IU football’s season opener. Hanner Perea transferred to LaPorte La Lumiere. Jeremy Hollowell named his leaders: IU and Ohio State.  Two recruits formerly on the board, Kenny Kaminski and Matt Costello, both committed to Michigan State. And Rivals and Scout both updated their rankings.

James Blackmon Jr. gives Indiana verbal commitment

UPDATE: 12:17 p.m. Friday

Just got off the phone with James Blackmon Sr. who said Tom Crean and Indiana’s coaching staff made his son feel “welcomed” throughout their recruitment, making last night’s decision easy.

“He made us feel welcomed, answered a lot of questions,” Blackmon Sr. said. “(Blackmon Jr.) had a lot of questions.”

Indiana’s recruitment of Blackmon Jr. really took shape over the summer, when his father said the Hoosiers got plenty of chances to see James play. The player also visited Indiana’s Elite Camp over the summer.

By the time he came down to visit last night, Blackmon Sr. said the last step in the process was easy to take.

“It just felt like this was a good opportunity,” he said. “I think Coach Crean is headed in the right direction.”

Blackmon Sr., who was a McDonald’s All-American at Marion High School and a standout guard at Kentucky, is his son’s coach at Bishop Luers in Fort Wayne. The elder Blackmon won state titles at the school in 2008 and 2009 with DeShaun Thomas, now a freshman at Ohio State. So his son’s pedigree is inherited from his father in more ways than one.

November 2013 is the earliest Blackmon Jr. can sign a letter of intent, but he’s already drawn rave reviews. ESPN has him ranked among the top 10 players in the ’14 class, and their top shooting guard. He is the only committed player in ESPN’s 2014 top 40, and it should also be noted he’s the only in-state player on that list.

Like many other recruits that have come through Bloomington since April, the Blackmons were particularly impressed by Cook Hall. More than that, Blackmon Sr. said, he was impressed by the convenience of having Cook Hall and Assembly Hall so close to the northwest dormitories.

“It was just so convenient,” Blackmon Sr. said. “It was exciting to be able to walk through (Cook Hall).”

Around the Hall: Gordon shines in Team USA win

+ Eric Gordon strengthened his case for a spot on Team USA by scoring 15 points in a 98-51 win over China on Saturday at Madison Square Garden.

+ Gordon tells the Los Angeles Times he has a good shot of making Team USA’s final roster.

+ Chris Sheridan of ESPN.com writes that the battle for the final spot on Team USA might be Gordon vs. Stephen Curry.

+ Dustin Dopirak of The Herald-Times reports that Ft. Wayne Bishop Luers freshman-to-be James Blackmon Jr. took an unofficial visit to Indiana.

+ According to Bob Baptist of the Columbus Dispatch, the Big Ten single plays for basketball this year will be the same as last season with a reversal of venues. Translation: IU gets Michigan State once (road) and Penn State once (home).

Indiana Class of 2012 Rankings

The state of Indiana is known for producing a plethora of Division 1 talent and the class of 2012 is no exception. This class features at least 10 high-major players and plenty of other players who could make an impact for mid-majors and low-majors. Direct any questions to the comment section and I’ll be glad to answer all of them.

15. Harry Wills 6’3 PG (Ben Davis) - Wills is a sleeper in this loaded class. He’s very quick, has good vision, and good passing ability, making him a strong floor general. He’s a tough defender who won’t give up any easy buckets or plays to his man. Wills is a good athlete and can finish against bigger opponents at the rim. He needs to develop his jump shot and could be a big steal if he improves his shooting.

14. Nick Osborne 6’8 PF (Muncie Central) – An extremely athletic big man with a great nose for the ball, Osborne excels at fighting for tough rebounds and earning points on the offensive glass. Osborne is very strong and is able to out-muscle and out-hustle opponents for loose balls and rebounds. He needs to expand his offensive game some, but he can knock down the open jumper if tested.

13. Ronnie Johnson 5’9 PG (North Central) – Ronnie is an ultra quick left-handed lead guard with great vision and supreme passing skills. He’s not a great shooter, but has a knack for hitting the mid-range floater and can score buckets at the rim. He’s the kind of player who can impact a game without scoring a single point. He needs to get stronger and improve his shooting, but he could be a big time coup for a mid-major program.

12. Kellen Dunham 6’4 SG (Pendleton Heights) – He’s arguably the best shooter in the state. He can knock down shots off the dribble, catch and shoot, or in transition. His ball-handling is improving and he’s showing increased ability to get to the rim and score. Dunham’s also one of the best free throw shooters in the state, converting at a rate of 89 percent during the high school season. He needs to get stronger and quicker to help transition to the college game, but he’s the kind of player you can see excelling at Butler.

Interview: Cody Zeller, Yogi Ferrell at adidas Nations

Just walked back up to my place after brief chats with IU recruiting targets Cody Zeller (2011) and Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell (2012) at the Swissotel here in Chicago in conjunction with adidas Nations.

First up: Mr. Zeller.

Let’s get this out of the way first. You’re down to three schools now: Butler, IU and UNC. What are liking about each of them?

Butler: Butler is known as a mid-major, but I don’t think they get recognized for how good they are. This year, they obviously went to the National Championship which put their name out there a bit more. Coach [Brad] Stevens is one of the best young coaches in the country. I’ve known him since they were recruiting Luke [Cody's older brother]. It’s a great university.

IU: Coach [Tom] Crean is one of the best coaches. He seems to be turning around the program right now. They just built the new Cook Hall, which is a great practice facility. They got one of the best business schools in the country.

UNC: At Carolina, they have one of the best coaching staffs in the country with coach [Roy] Williams and his staff. The tradition down there is unreal.

What’s the experience like for you coming into a tournament like this where it’s not your AAU or school team and you’re not as familiar with your teammates?

The talent is unreal here. I just try and do whatever the team needs. You’re not going to score 20 points like [you would on] your AAU team. It’s a lot different role but it’s fun playing with such talented teammates.

Does the rest of your summer start winding down after this with school looming soon? Is this your last event?

This is the last one. School starts on the 16th. My brother [Luke] gets married next weekend, so that’s what I’m doing with [my time]. The summer’s gone by fast.
