Presser Notes and Quotes: Will Sheehey, Christian Watford

by in Media | September 22nd, 2011

Indiana sophomore Will Sheehey and junior Christian Watford met with the media on Thursday afternoon in Assembly Hall and here are some notes and quotes from that session:

– Let’s go dancing: Watford didn’t shy away from increased expectations this season. Behold: “If we didn’t make it (the NCAA Tournament), I feel like it would be a failure. With what we’ve got now, the time is now.”

– Freshmen transitioning: Sheehey hasn’t said much to the three freshmen, but is trying to lead by example: “You don’t really tell them much. It’s kind of a thing with freshmen that you kind of let them learn on their own because it helps them in a sense. They learn from what you do and follow after so we have to set a good example. They have really caught on and have been doing really well.”

– Cody Zeller’s impact: Watford acknowledged that the arrival of the first McDonald’s All-American of the Tom Crean era should allow him to step out on the perimeter a bit more and also talked about his potential impact: “He is going to draw a lot of attention, more than anything. He’s a big guy that can pass the ball and can see the floor. That’s what we need. He can also finish down there so that’s going to help us, too.”

– A down Big Ten? Not so fast: Preseason chatter has the Big Ten being down this year, but Watford still believes a tough haul lies ahead for the Hoosiers: “It’s going to be tough. The Big Ten always reloads every year. Good players leave and good players come in. It’s always going to be tough and you are always going to have your teams like Ohio State and Wisconsin that are always tough, no matter if it seems like they are having a down year or not.”

Around the Hall: Indy Pro AM, 2013 rankings, more

by in Media | July 1st, 2011

Around the Hall is recommended reading from the Inside the Hall crew. So go ahead, get your read on. (Photo credit: Jamie Owens of J. Scott Sports)

Our friend Hugh Kellenberger of The Herald-Times breaks down the action (with video) from last night’s Indy Pro AM league at IUPUI. Vigilant Sports also has some video from the event.

Scout.com released an updated top 100 for the class of 2013. Neither Collin Hartman or Devin Davis Jr. are ranked.

Nebraska is now officially a member of the Big Ten.

The pools and schedule are out for next week’s adidas Invitational in Indianapolis.

The players’ union wants a lower age limit for early entry into the NBA Draft.

Cody Zeller is the No. 10 recruit nationally in the final RSCI rankings, which aggregates the rankings from all of the major scouting services.

Kyle Neddenriep of the Indianapolis Star has a Q & A with Indianapolis Tech sophomore guard Jeremie Tyler, who is receiving interest from Indiana.

Michigan sophomore guard Tim Hardaway Jr. hit a game-winner for Team USA in the FIBA U19 World Championships.

The uncle of former Illinois forward Jereme Richmond tells the Chicago Tribune that his nephew was misled by Illini assistant coach Jerrance Howard. Richmond’s father, however, has no problem with Howard.

That’s A Wrap: Tom Crean

by in Commentary | April 1st, 2011

Welcome to “That’s A Wrap,” our attempt to make some sense of the 2010-11 season. Sit back. Relax. Grab some popcorn. Get your read on. Today: Tom Crean.

Tom Crean stood at the lectern inside the Assembly Hall press room, his most common pulpit, and tried in vain to put into words what had just come to pass.

Crean’s team had just lost 70-64 at home to Northwestern, the Hoosiers’ fourth in a row and third on the run against a once-conference doormat that Indiana fans had long enjoyed beating comfortably.

The third-year Indiana coach looked perplexed, lost in thought. He was without his tie, taken off during the game itself, commonly viewed as a sign of unusual frustration. A man noted for his ability to speak prolifically, on this night, appeared void of explanations.

He talked about his team’s lack of accountability, lamenting that just one of his players (it turned out to be freshman Will Sheehey) actually asked to match up defensively with Michael Thompson, the Wildcats’ leading scorer on the night. That lack of willingness (or desire, if you will) from his more veteran players to meet that challenge head-on had Crean practically speechless.

It might have been as flustered and defeated as Crean has ever looked in his three years in Bloomington.

That’s A Wrap: Will Sheehey

by in Commentary | March 25th, 2011

Welcome to “That’s A Wrap,” our attempt to make some sense of the 2010-11 season. Sit back. Relax. Grab some popcorn. Get your read on. Today: Will Sheehey.

Final Stats (32 games): 4.8 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 14 steals, 31 off. rebounds, 7 starts, 48.4 FG%

It’s probably safe to assume the expectations surrounding Will Sheehey were rather tame when the freshman forward arrived on campus last fall. The 2010 recruiting period had been somewhat quiet, and Sheehey didn’t have quite the marketable athleticism of fellow rookie Victor Oladipo. We thought.

Turns out that pot might have been called a little early. As the season progressed, Sheehey turned from energy guy off the bench to one of Indiana’s mot consistent and aggressive players at either end of the floor. He showed great strides in his defense and decision-making, and compared to his freshman counterpart looked a tad more physically ready for the college game.

And then of course, he did this:

Highlight-reel stuff for sure, but it’s important to remember the back story.

Accountability must be player-born, player-bred

by in Commentary | February 20th, 2011

BLOOMINGTON — I’m going to tell you a story.

That’s one of the wonderful options available in writing for a web site rather than, say, a traditional newspaper: I get to be a lot more informal and conversational. So here goes.

For those who do not know, I rode Little 5 for four years for my fraternity. For three of those years, I rode with two guys in particular, very close friends and the best training partners I could have asked for.

We gelled well from my freshman year (their sophomore years, both of them were a year ahead of me) on, and really formed a tight partnership.

In the fall semester of my junior year, burdened with a heavy class load and time-consuming IDS work, I cut back on my training at the same time that the two of them – by that time seniors – were ramping theirs up.

I thought I could make up the time lost, and I convinced myself I wasn’t falling behind, but the truth was that I knew I wasn’t going to be where they were or where I needed to be come spring, when the real work would be done, and I was right. They were immensely disappointed in me, and whether they knew it or not, I was far, far more disappointed in myself.

I broke myself trying to catch up. Trying not to let them down. That was why I trained, why we trained. It wasn’t glorious by any stretch – forcing yourself onto a bike in the middle of the winter is pretty miserable stuff in southern Indiana.

But we were so deathly afraid of letting one another down that we didn’t dare ease up one step, one mile, and we would abuse ourselves to make up for it if we did.

There was scattered criticism tonight of Tom Crean during his postgame press conference, for, as best I can tell, demanding greater accountability from his team while deflecting it from himself.

In some facets of the overall make-up of Indiana basketball, that kind of argument is plausible. The coach is heavily involved, obviously, in the team’s failure, just as much as its success.

But tonight, of all nights, such criticism really was unfounded. The kind of accountability Crean talked about had nothing to do with him, and everything to do with his players.
