Tyler Zeller visits Bloomington

by in Recruiting | August 7th, 2007

Tyler ZellerThanks to one of our contacts in Bloomington (and a faithful reader of the site), Zach, Inside the Hall has learned that Tyler Zeller was in Bloomington today on an unofficial visit.

Zeller was spotted in the South lobby of Assembly Hall around 2 pm this afternoon along with IU Athletics Director Rick Greenspan, coach Kelvin Sampson, Eric Gordon and D.J. White.

No other details are available of the visit, but we figured we ought to pass it along.

I assume Zeller was checking out the Kelley School of Business, which he is reportedly interested in learning more about. Zeller will not participate in tonight’s Barnstorming Tour game at North Daviess as originally speculated.

The key in my estimation for the Hoosiers landing Zeller will be getting their official visit the weekend of Midnight Madness or securing the last official visit.

While I’m not yet ready to call IU the leader for his services, there’s no question that the Hoosiers are picking up momentum for the Washington (IN) big man.

IU makes final four for Tyler Zeller

by in Recruiting | August 3rd, 2007

Tyler ZellerTyler Zeller, the top senior-to-be in the state of Indiana from Washington High School in North Daviess, has a list of his top four schools, announced today on the Indiana Elite website.

As I told you a month ago, the momentum for the Hoosiers in Zeller’s recruitment seemed to be gaining steam and the news today only reinforces that sentiment.

The four schools still in the running: IU, Purdue, North Carolina and Notre Dame.

Notably absent are Kentucky and Kansas who were initially thought to be serious contenders in the race for the big man.

There is no timetable for a decision as Zeller plans to take official visits to each school before making his choice later in the fall.

Monday roundup: D.J. adds a move, Mackey surfaces in Vegas

D.J. White- The praise for D.J. White for his performances with the United States team leading up to the Pan American Games continues to come rolling in. Haverford, a blog that is following the team, has the latest on IU’s top returning scorer:

When the D stretched to account for Foster’s hot hand, White assaulted Jason Fraser with an array of hook shots and drop steps inside. D.J.’s hook is a throw-back to an earlier era with a contemporary influence. Both the traditional sky hook and White’s “power hook” are released with one hand with the off-arm pointed directly at the basket. The sky hook circa 1976 was a finesse shot, taken from a slight running start. But White doesn’t need the momentum or the leg kick often associated with the move to pour in his points. By dropping his beefy shoulder into his defender’s chest, he adds a powerful component to the high release point in order to hit this shot from the low post.

Sounds like D.J. is adding a nice hook shot to go along with his patented turnaround baseline jumper. If it continues to develop, he’ll be even more unstoppable on the low block.

- Bud Mackey, IU’s first commitment for the 2008 class, has landed with the Indiana Elite AAU team. Currently he’s participating in the Adidas Super 64 in Las Vegas, the biggest AAU tournament of the summer. This is Mackey’s first AAU action in quite a while due to a torn meniscus suffered at the end of last season.

Also playing on the Indiana Elite team are IU targets Tyler Zeller and Lewis Jackson. Through their first two contests of the event, Indiana Elite is 0-2. According to Jody Demling, coach Kelvin Sampson watched Indiana Elite yesterday along with UK coach Billy Gillispie, UNC coach Roy Williams and Illinois coach Bruce Weber.

IU is a darkhorse for Tyler Zeller

by in Recruiting | July 6th, 2007

Tyler ZellerMost recent reports list four schools, in no particular order, as the leaders for the services of 6’11″ Washington center Tyler Zeller. Those schools are Purdue, Kansas, Kentucky and North Carolina.

However, there is one school that isn’t mentioned quite as frequently but could be right in line with the others: Indiana.

Zeller grew up in Daviess County, which is prime IU territory.

Steve Bouchie, the state’s Mr. Basketball in 1979, played on IU’s 1981 national title team, providing an IU connection with Zeller. Bouchie ranks third on Washington’s all-time scoring list with 1,311 points.

Expect Indiana to make the cut when Zeller trims his list of schools later in the summer. And if his parents want to watch him regularly, Bloomington is much closer than West Lafayette, Lawrence (KS), Lexington or Chapel Hill.
