The first of three official visits scheduled for 2012 target Gary Harris takes place this weekend at Purdue. The Boilermakers host Notre Dame in football Saturday night on ESPN which should make for an interesting atmosphere. Harris will spend Friday evening at Noblesville as the Hamilton Southeastern football team looks to move to 6-1.

There’s still been no word on plans for an official visit to Kentucky, but the Wildcats have offered a scholarship according to GoldandBlack.com. After the Purdue visit, Indiana will get Harris next for Hoosier Hysteria on October 15 and then Michigan State will host him on the weekend of November 5. The early signing period begins on Wednesday, November 9.

Crean in Indianapolis

Brian Snow of Scout.com reported that Tom Crean was at North Central for open gym on Wednesday to watch 2014 forward Perry Poindexter. The 6-foot-7 Poindexter has interest from Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue and Xavier. Crean was also at Indianapolis Tech on Wednesday watching 2014 commitment Trey Lyles according to Trevor Andershock. Lyles’ high school coach, Jason Delaney, also confirmed Crean’s presence at Tech.

Notebook: Poindexter visit, 2014 visitors, more

by in Recruiting | September 8th, 2011

Inside the Hall had a chance to catch up with Eric Gordon All-Stars coach Brian Keeton earlier this evening to discuss 2014 North Central forward Perry Poindexter’s unofficial visit to Bloomington on Wednesday.

Poindexter (pictured), who played junior varsity last season, now stands at 6-foot-7 with a 7-foot-2 wingspan and his tremendous upside has caught the eye of several Big Ten programs.

A couple of takeaways from our conversation with Keeton are blockquoted below:

Keeton on the visit: “It was a good visit. I thought things went real well. Perry really liked the staff. The visit was mostly just to get comfortable with the staff. Perry really hadn’t ever had the chance to meet or talk to Coach Crean, talk to any of those guys. It was the first time he got to interact with them. Perry, he was impressed and I think they’re going to start doing some good things down there.”

Keeton on what college coaches like about Poindexter: “Perry’s a big, big potential guy. He’s got the length, he’s a pretty athletic kid, he can get off the ground, he’s a great defender. Finding kids that want to defend at a younger age is kind of tough to do. He runs the floor extremely well.”

Keeton on the comparisons to former Purdue standout JaJuan Johnson at the same stage: “A lot of people give you the comparison of JaJuan Johnson. I know JaJuan real well. He played at the same high school I did. If Perry wants to work as hard as JaJuan used to work, then he’s got an opportunity to do some similar things. I think they compare him a lot because of body type and the fact that coming into college, JaJuan was more of a defender. Everybody was expecting him to be better on the defensive end than the offensive end. Perry’s at the same stage. He’s a better defender than he is an offensive player.”

Notebook: Individual workouts begin, rankings and more

– Individual workouts begin: The start of the fall academic semester on Monday also signaled the start of individual workouts with the IU coaches and players in Assembly Hall. Tom Crean shared the following observations from day one (and also some photos) via his Twitter account:

Some things I liked yesterday after our 1st workouts: Verdell ‘s strength and finishing, Cody’s potential for range on his shot, Austin’s jumper, Will’s pullup and increased range, Victor’s release on his shot and Christian’s patience at reading defenders. Jordan was our best % shooter in our tests yesterday and that is no surprise. Maurice goes for the 1st time today. That will be great to see. I loved the way Derek moved and shot the ball yesterday. Having him healthy could make a big difference. He has to develop consistency.

– Rankings, rankings and more rankings: Scout.com revealed team rankings for the 2012 class and Indiana debuted at No. 1. Our friends at UMHoops.com are tracking recruiting efforts across the Big Ten and the Hoosiers also sit atop there. Rivals revealed its top 150 for 2013 and both Collin Hartman and Devin Davis are in the top 100. And finally, Ballin’ is a Habit has consensus post-July rankings for 2012 which are an aggregation of Rivals, Scout, ESPN, CBS and 247Sports.

– Better luck? Andy Glockner of SI.com profiled five teams, including Indiana, that found themselves in the bottom 50 of Ken Pomeroy’s luck rating, a statistic that measures the difference between a team’s actual record and its expected performance based on efficiency ratings. His conclusion? Things are looking up in Bloomington. It should be noted that the Hoosiers were actually 343rd out of 345 teams in last year’s Pomeroy “luck” rating.
