Pick ‘Em Prize: Guest blogger @ ITH

by in Media | March 19th, 2008

First off, props to all of the ITH’ers who have joined the Yahoo! Tournament Pick’ Em group. As of this writing, we’ve got 388 members and we’re the 8th largest group. We tossed around a couple of ideas on how to reward the winner of the contest and decided that we’ll grant the winner a guest post of his or her choice here at Inside the Hall. (We’d like to give away some scratch, but hey, it’s not in the budget. If any potential sponsors are reading and would like to throw some schwag to the winner, let us know.) Unfortunately, if one of us wins, you’ll be stuck with more Kevin Stallings bashing. We will have the final edit before your post goes live, but it’ll be your chance to speak out and have your voice heard. For those of you who haven’t entered, there’s still time to get in on the contest. Just make sure to have your picks in before the first game tips off on Thursday.

Around the Hall: Selection Sunday reaction

by in Media | March 17th, 2008

I’m still waiting on some clarification on how IU dropped to a No. 8 seed (reality check: it’ll never happen), but in the meantime, here’s the best of the best from the Web this morning:

Breaking down the Charlotte Regional

hansbrough1.jpgTyler Hansbrough is one sexy beast. Reminder: Don’t forget to join the Inside the Hall NCAA Tournament Pick ‘Em Challenge by clicking here.

Marquee players: Tyler Hansbrough (UNC), Wayne Ellington (UNC), Ty Lawson (UNC), Eric Gordon (IU), D.J. White (IU), Luke Harangody (Notre Dame), Chris Lofton (Tennessee), Tyler Smith (Tennessee), Terrance Williams (Louisville), Blake Griffin (Oklahoma), Derrick Low (Washington State), Mike Green (Butler), Demetric Bennett (South Alabama)

Best chance for an upset
: St. Joseph’s over Oklahoma – Phil Martelli’s club already owns two wins over Xavier, beat Villanova and played Gonzaga tough early in the season. Honorable mention: South Alabama over Butler – Butler can’t be pleased with their seeding or the fact that they’ll be facing the Jaguars in Birmingham.

Dark horse to make it San Antonio: Louisville – The Cardinals were a top ten team to start the season and Rick Pitino is no stranger to making a Final Four run. If, and this is a huge if, Louisville can get consistency from Edgar Sosa, Jerry Smith and Andre McGee, their frontcourt is deep enough to play with anybody.

An eight seed? Are you serious?

by in Commentary | March 16th, 2008

oconnor2392.jpgTom O’Connor says “I’m the worst NCAA selection committee chairman of all-time.”

Over the course of this afternoon, I had discussions with PostmanE and PostmanR as well as a member of the mainstream media on the potential seeding for IU in the NCAA Tournament. The consensus seemed to be that the Hoosiers were going to be a 5 or a 6. After all, they were 14-4 in a power conference and lost on a fluke shot to Minnesota in the conference tournament.

Shortly after the brackets were announced and the Hoosiers were revealed as a No. 8 seed, I was baffled. Does the NCAA Tournament committee really believe that IU is not one of the top 28 teams in the country? They’ve been ranked all season and they’ve got a top 25 RPI. Sure, they’ve been playing poorly in their last six games, but the overall body of work is strong. Of their seven losses, five are to tournament teams: Connecticut, Michigan State, Wisconsin twice and Xavier.

The reward for a resume that clearly screams a No. 6 at worst? A No. 8 in the East region with a potential second round game with the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament. In other words, barring a miracle, the season will be over a week from today and perhaps five days from today if IU can’t beat Arkansas. My optimism for a potential tourney run was marginal at best. Now, it’s essentially non-existent. Hey, there’s always next year, right?

Indiana received a No. 8 seed and will face Arkansas in the East region Friday in Raleigh, North Carolina. If IU wins their first game, they’d play North Carolina in the second round.
