Hoosiers ranked No. 9 in preseason coaches poll

by in Media | October 26th, 2007

Lance StemlerThe first college hoops poll of the season was released today and IU is represented as a top 10 preseason selection by the coaches. The Hoosiers are slotted at No. 9, just behind Michigan State.

When was the last time IU was ranked this high going into the season? (To be perfectly honest, I can’t remember. Bonus points to anyone who knows.)

Two of IU’s non-conference opponents, Kentucky and Southern Illinois, also made the cut. The Wildcats, who visit Assembly Hall on December 8, are No. 22 and the Salukis, who will host the Hoosiers on December 1, are No. 23.

Besides IU and Michigan State, the only other Big Ten teams mentioned were Ohio State, Wisconsin and Illinois who were among the “others receiving votes.”

I’m inclined to say the coaches got it right this time as I can make a case for each team ranked ahead of us for the time being. Duke is, as usual, overrated at No. 11. And two-time defending national champion, Florida, seems a bit underrated. They did, after all, sign one of the top recruiting classes in the country.

So, what are your thoughts on IU’s preseason ranking? Too high? Too low? Just right? I’m interested in hearing your take.

Sporting News tabs Gordon first team All-American, IU ranked 10th

by in Media | October 4th, 2007

Eric GordonAnother day and another hoops preview is on the newsstands. This time its The Sporting News, which is publishing for the last time on its own after merging with Street & Smith’s.

Here’s the rundown on the magazine from the IU perspective:

  1. The Hoosiers are picked as the No. 10 team in the country. Michigan St. is No. 9.
  2. Michigan St. is the pick to win the Big Ten with the Hoosiers taking second.
  3. Eric Gordon is a first team All-American joining Tyler Hansbrough of North Carolina, D.J. Augustin of Texas, Chase Buddinger of Arizona and Chris Lofton of Tennessee.
  4. Gordon and D.J. White are both on the first team All-Big Ten along with Geary Claxton of Penn St., Shaun Pruitt of Illinois and Drew Neitzel of Michigan St.
  5. Jamarcus Ellis is the given the nod as the best transfer in the Big Ten.
  6. Gordon is the league’s best freshman.
  7. White is recognized as the top NBA prospect and top shot blocker in the Big Ten.
  8. Kelvin Sampson is called the best interview among Big Ten coaches.
  9. Tom Izzo is their pick for the best coach in the Big Ten.
  10. And finally, their top five teams nationally: UCLA, Memphis, North Carolina, Kansas and Georgetown.

I agree with most of the predictions here, although calling D.J. the best NBA prospect would seem to be a bit of a stretch. I’d say Mr. Gordon should have that distinction. I think most of us can agree that the Hoosiers and Spartans are the two best teams in the league. And it’s nice to see Jamarcus Ellis get some love. He’ll be a huge addition, no doubt. Is it time to start playing games yet?

CBS Sports has lofty expectations for Hoosiers

by in Media | September 30th, 2007

D.J. WhiteWhile making my rounds through Borders last night, I noticed a third college hoops publication on the shelves and it was that of CBS Sports. For the most part it looked like a solid magazine, sans the presence of Gary Parrish.

I took a quick flip through and here are some of the notable things from the IU standpoint:

  1. They’ve got IU ranked 11th in the country, two slots behind their Big Ten favorite Michigan State.
  2. Eric Gordon is listed as the No. 3 newcomer behind Derrick Rose of Memphis and Michael Beasley of Kansas State.
  3. D.J. White and Gordon are both listed as first team All-Big Ten. They’ve selected Drew Neitzel as the conference player of the year.
  4. Gordon is the newcomer of the year in the Big Ten.
  5. White is listed as a third team All-American.
  6. Gordon is listed as a second team All-American.

Obviously, the word is out on EJ and everyone already knows, yes he is THAT good. They’ve also given D.J. a very solid billing and rightfully so. He’ll be the captain and the key to taking us to San Antonio. As far as picking Michigan State to win the conference, I think you can make an argument for IU or the Spartans. The conference crown will come down to which team can win more frequently on the road during league play.

Drew Neitzel sings praises of Assembly Hall

by in Opponents | September 6th, 2007

aj_neitzel.jpgOver at Sports Illustrated today, Luke Winn threw down an interview he conducted with Michigan State’s Drew Neitzel. (I swear DN should have graduated two years ago. Seems like he’s been there forever.)

Within it, Neitzel talks about playing on the road in the Big Ten, namely at Assembly Hall:

It’s a tough conference to play on the road. Every place is unique, and sometimes it depends on what kind of a year a team is having. Illinois is tough. Indiana might be No. 1, though. It’s not just their student section; it’s their whole fan base. They love basketball. The arena [Assembly Hall] is huge. It’s like a theater — it goes up really high on both sides, and the sound seems to echo in there. It feels like the fans are right on top of you, and they get pretty loud.

I haven’t been to a lot of other Big Ten arenas, (only Illinois’ Assembly Hall and Northwestern’s um, high school gym) but I’d have to say Drew’s right: the other Assembly Hall is right up there with IU’s. With the Orange Krush student section literally on the court, the atmosphere can get rather raucous in there. I’d actually give the edge to the Illini on a few different facets, (namely student section and crowd continuity) but IU has more seats which should equate to more sound, no?

Let’s just call this a draw. Because if there’s one thing we’ve learned about Illinois and Indiana fanbases, it’s that they like to agree, right?

The Hoosiers are awesome, baby!

by in Media | September 4th, 2007

Dick VitaleThe preseason hoops polls are slowly starting to trickle out and today we got Dick Vitale’s top 40 teams. Using his revolutionary “Vitale Bald Dome Index” formula, also known as the VBDI, Dickie V has the Hoosiers pegged as the No. 8 team in the land.

8. Indiana: Kelvin Sampson is thrilled to have diaper dandy Eric Gordon, and the newcomer will make a difference right out of the blocks. DJ White has to have a strong season.

Nothing groundbreaking here from Vitale on the Hoosiers, but some of his other predictions did catch my eye.

First, Michigan State is slotted at No. 7, which is a fair assesment of the team Tom Izzo will put on the floor in East Lansing this season. Ohio State was the only other Big Ten team mentioned, coming in at No. 23.

Two teams I thought Vitale overrated were Duke (surprise, surprise) and Kentucky. Duke is penciled in at No. 12 and I just don’t see where the Blue Devils will be much better than last season. I know, I know, they return everyone of importance from last year’s team with the exception of Josh McRoberts. But they weren’t any good last year. Maybe they’re counting the loss of McRoberts as addition by subtraction. As far as Kentucky goes, they’ll be improved, but they’re still very thin down low and their point guard play is very questionable. The last I checked, those are two important variables.

ESPN still hasn’t addressed Vitale’s obsolete website, which takes me back to the days of dial-up and Compuserve as an ISP. Maybe that’s because this company is so proud of their creation.

An early look: Michigan State Spartans

by in Opponents | August 7th, 2007

Drew NeitzelSteve Grinczel is the Michigan State beat writer for the Booth Newspaper chain, which includes the Ann Arbor News, Bay City Times, Flint Journal, Grand Rapids Press, Jackson Citizen Patriot, Kalamazoo Gazette, Muskegon Chronicle, and Saginaw News — and MLive.com. He recently took the time out of his busy schedule to give Inside the Hall an in-depth, early look at Michigan State hoops for 2007-2008. Check out Steve’s Spartans Insider blog by clicking here.

Inside the Hall: With Drew Neitzel and Raymar Morgan returning and a solid incoming freshman class, what are the expectations going to be like this year in East Lansing?

Steve Grinczel: While MSU has had some terrific NBA-caliber talent and experience come through the tunnel in recent seasons, the most the program seemed to generate is a hopeful hum. That said, I expect a buzz that’s been conspicuous by its absence in recent years will be back in 2007-08. To some, the Spartans are building toward a run to the Final Four that will be played in Detroit in 2009. However, Neitzel’s reputation for not being denied preceded him to East Lansing and as a senior he’s down to his final season of eligibility. This is a payoff year for him, and I’m certain he’s expecting nothing less than leading MSU to its first Big Ten title since ’01 and a deep run in the NCAA Tournament. Neitzel has the credentials as a scorer and set-up man to justify likely preseason All-America honors. And, the backcourt should be as good as any in the country with point guard Travis Walton establishing himself as a lock-down defender. Morgan showed why he’s considered a special player during his injury-slowed freshman season and should make a big jump with a year under his belt.

Goran Suton and Marquise Gray struggled to find consistency in the frontcourt, but should have ironed out those problems with experience. I look for lanky 7-foot Tom Herzog, who redshirted last season as a freshman, to be the surprise player of the Big Ten. A true postman who likes to play with his back to the basket, his skills and athleticism defy the first impression of being ungainly. Then there’s senior Drew Naymick, whose breakout second-half-of-the-season was critical to the Spartans’ 10th straight NCAA Tournament appearance.

A lack of depth forced Coach Tom Izzo to go against everything he holds near and dear and slow things down last season. With three athletic freshmen coming in, MSU will be back to its withering, up-tempo game. All-in-all, things are falling back into place for the Spartans.
