Ah, to be young: Matt Roth speaks

by in Recruiting | August 23rd, 2007

Matt RothThe newest member of Kelvin Sampson’s 2008 class — the sweet-shooting Matt Roth — has had time to discuss his decision to leave the friendly confines of Peoria and head East to Bloomington, and it’s much of what you would expect. Matt faced an archetypal decision, one not unlike the same ones so many prospective college students make:

“Academically, they’re all great schools and I couldn’t go wrong,” Roth said. “I decided I wanted to be able to play for Big Ten championships and play for a national championship every year I’m there. I’m a little relieved to get it over with. Now I can focus on my senior year.”

“I don’t think Coach Sampson missed a game of mine in Vegas,” he said. “He saw me play really well and he told my coach he was going to make an offer after the tournament. (Indiana) emerged a little bit later, but I had visited the campus a couple of times unofficially and had a good feel for it. It’s going to be great to compete at that level.”

“I owe my family a lot,” he said. “I’ve spent a lot of time talking with them about this. They’ve been very supportive.”

“I wouldn’t change a thing about it,” he said. “It’s an opportunity of a lifetime. It’s almost sad that not every kid can go through this. It’s an honor and a privilege knowing what I’m going to do. The right decision is for me to go to Indiana. There’s no looking back and I’m happy with my decision.”

And then Papa Roth:

Dave Roth said the idea of their son playing for the hometown Braves was an attractive one, but in the end, they left the decision to Matt.

“It wasn’t about what we wanted,” Dave Roth said. “He’s 18 years old now and it’s more important he did what he wanted. That’s what he did. He made a great decision.”

“What it came down to was, did Matt want to play in the Big Ten or did he want to play close to home?” Brown said. “When he told me that’s what he was thinking, I said, ‘Do you want to have your family, coaches and ex-teammates watching your home games or do you want to go for a dream you have?’ Since then, he’s done a lot of fishing.”

That’s a lot of blockquoting to parse, but it’s clear that the decision came down to Matt’s dream of playing in the Big Ten. And really, who could blame him? No knock on Bradley, which has an excellent mid-major (and rising) program, but the idea of playing all your games in front of the same people you hung out with in high school while a historically successful, tradition-laden program lies just down 1-74, well, who wouldn’t call that a mistake?

Thousands of high school seniors face this decision every year. Do I go to the local school with my friends and parents nearby, or do I branch out and take a risk? I’m glad to see Matt made the same choice I did. Hopefully he benefits from it as much as I have.

Matt Roth will be a Hoosier

by in Recruiting | August 22nd, 2007

Matt RothCoach Kelvin Sampson and staff have landed their third commitment for the 2008 class as Washington (IL) guard Matt Roth has given a verbal pledge to IU.

A relative unknown nationally until this summer when he opened eyes with his sweet shooting stroke, Roth caught the eye of Kelvin Sampson at the Adidas Super 64 AAU Tournament in Las Vegas.

After an unofficial visit to Bloomington a couple of weeks ago where Roth was able to meet with the staff and tour the campus, the Hoosiers became a leader to land Roth along with St. Louis University and Bradley.

Ultimately, the Hoosiers won out, presumably because the Big Ten offers a chance to play against better competition and the chance for a National Championship.

As a junior last year, Roth averaged 21.1 points per game. He shot 48 percent from behind the arc. His 143 three-pointers were just short of the state record in Illinois.

Matt Roth down to two: Bradley and IU

by in Recruiting | August 21st, 2007

roth.jpgIt wasn’t without controversy, but Washington (IL) sharpshooter Matt Roth has narrowed his college choices to two: Bradley and Indiana.

Last week, it appeared Roth had trimmed his list to Indiana and St. Louis, but later said that he was misquoted. Whatever the case may be, he’s got things sorted out now and the Hoosiers look to be in very good shape.

Roth is expected to make a decision this Thursday or Friday and I’m expecting good news for IU. The choice pretty much comes down to whether Roth wants to play for appearances in the NCAA Tournament or National Championships.

At Bradley, he’d come right in and be one of their go-to-guys. The Braves are satisfied just to make the tournament and are thrilled if they’re able to advance.

At IU, he’d have to battle for playing time, but with his shooting ability, the minutes would come. Under Coach Sampson, IU is poised to make noise in the tournament every year and compete for championships.

In the end, will Roth opt to stay close to home or play in the national spotlight? We’ll know soon enough.

I’m interested in hearing your thoughts on where he’ll end up.

Updates on Ray McCallum Jr, Matt Roth and Dashan Harris

by in Recruiting | August 15th, 2007

Ray McCallum Jr.There’s been a lot of good Hoosier links around the Web the past few days. Here’s a brief look at them:

- Matt Dollinger of the Indiana Daily Student has a great piece on Bloomington North sophomore-to-be Ray McCallum Jr. I first saw Ray Jr. at the Kentucky Hoopfest last month and came away very impressed.

After seeing him again at the New Albany Barnstorming Tour game a couple weeks ago, I was even more convinced that he’s got a chance to be an All-Conference player wherever he ends up. Of course IU fans are most interested in hearing that he’ll be a Hoosier and the younger McCallum seems to be warming to the idea:

“I still want to play for my dad,” McCallum said. “But I’m looking more these days at IU.”

- Jody Demling of the Louisville Courier-Journal caught up with Matt Roth and it’s looking favorable that IU could get good news from Roth very soon. Roth is down to St. Louis and Indiana and here are his most recent thoughts on the Hoosiers:

“I feel for as late as it was in the summer for them to start calling me, I’ve built the best possible relationship on a short notice,” Roth told The Courier-Journal in a phone interview on Monday. “It’s still growing, but it’s going in a positive direction.”

- Last, but not least, Dashan Harris appears to be favoring Texas A & M. The Monteverde (FL) Academy point guard recently visited the Aggies and a commitment could be imminent (subscription required).

“Things are going good. I just took an unofficial visit to Texas A&M yesterday,” Harris said. “It went pretty well. It went real well. I was real impressed with the school.”

“They are high on my list,” Harris said. “It (a commitment) could be a possibility.”

Earlier this summer, the IU coaching staff appeared to be hot on the trail of both Harris and Lewis Jackson. However, interest in Jackson fizzled and Harris is less of a priority simply because IU has plenty of options at the point guard position over the next few seasons.

A first look: 2008 target Matt Roth

by in Recruiting | August 12th, 2007

I’ve talked quite a bit the past few weeks about 2008 target Matt Roth, but this is the first chance I’ve had to take in video of the Washington High (IL) sharpshooter. And since he was relatively unknown on the national scene until the Adidas Super 64 last month, this is probably your first look as well.

This video, courtesty of Midstatehoops.com, is from a game last November. You can definitely see why the IU coaching staff is hot on the trail of Roth: He can flat out shoot it. He also has a very quick release and doesn’t mind shooting with a hand in his face. After viewing this, I’m even more excited about the prospect of Roth becoming a Hoosier.

Matt Roth has IU in his top three

by in Recruiting | August 9th, 2007

roth.jpgA news station near Peoria, Il., HOI 19, is reporting that Illinois sharpshooter Matt Roth has narrowed his college choices down to three. IU made the cut.

Washington High senior basketball star Matt Roth had what he described as a great visit to Indiana University Saturday.  “It was a very positive visit. They had great ideas of what they saw me doing coming into the program and helping,” Roth told me.  Matt also said he was very impressed with the Indiana University business school, his intended major.  “It’s one of the best in the midwest.  The visit as a whole went extremely well.”

Roth said it was his first time to meet the Indiana Coaching staff and he was impressed with them and their vision for the Hoosiers program. Roth was so impressed by Indiana that the Hoosiers now join Bradley and St Louis as Roth’s top 3 college choices.

Our resident recruiting expert around these parts, Big A, tells me that although Roth is unranked in the 2008 class, he possesses quite the shooting prowess. Couple that with the fact the Roth plays on the Indiana Elite squad with another hopeful IU recruit, Tyler Zeller, who is eyeing the business school as well, (Kelley 4 eva) and these fellas might just be a package deal. (Although, IU fans held out that same hope for Derrick Rose and Eric Gordon, if you remember.)

Considering Roth has Bradley and St. Louis as his two other schools — not exactly hotbeds for basketball — Hoosier Nation should feel good about IU’s chances with Roth.
