Report: Kenny Kaminski picks Michigan State

by in Recruiting | July 31st, 2010

The speculation that has been building for weeks was correct: Medina (OH) forward Kenny Kaminski will take his game to East Lansing.

Evan Daniels of Scout.com reports, via a source, that Kaminski has given a verbal commitment to Tom Izzo and Michigan State.

The 6-7, 180-pound forward helped lead Medina to a 20-3 record as a sophomore and averaged close to 17 points and seven rebounds per game.

Kaminski chose Michigan State over Indiana, Ohio State and Wisconsin.

July evaluation period: 2012 class (part two)

by in Recruiting | July 18th, 2010

Inside the Hall hit the recruiting trail for the start of the July evaluation period and made stops at the adidas Invitational in Indianapolis and the Kentucky Hoopfest in Louisville. Here are our notes on prospects in the 2012 class with IU recruiting ties:

(Editor’s Note: The 2011 Recruiting Board, updated on 7/17/10, can be accessed here.)

+ Matt Costello, Bay City Western (MI), Dorian’s Pride (pictured): Costello, a high-energy prospect that rarely takes a play off, is a versatile forward that can knock down shots from the perimeter and also finish in the post. His mid-range game is solid, too, and he doesn’t shy away from taking the open look. Costello excels at doing the little things it takes to win — like setting hard screens and diving for loose balls. He’s listed at 6-8 or 6-9, but looked to be closer to 6-7 based on observing a game and then standing next to him for an interview. It’s tough to imagine Costello leaving his home state with offers from Michigan and Michigan State already in-hand.

+ Kenny Kaminski, Medina (OH), Indiana Elite Team Indiana: Kaminski will announce his decision on July 31 and four schools remain in the mix: Indiana, Michigan State, Ohio State and Wisconsin. Speculation has him leaning towards MSU and he admitted in an interview that his preferred destination is beginning to come into focus. Kaminski is an elite shooter with an improving game in the paint. He’s a better athlete than he’s given credit for, but his ball handling and rebounding are two areas he’s working to improve upon. In a meeting with the Birmingham Storm at The Kentucky Hoopfest, it was Kaminski’s leadership that helped pull together IE Team Indiana for a second half rally in front of Tom Izzo, Bo Ryan and Tim Buckley.

+ Peter Jurkin, United Faith Christian Academy (NC), Indiana Elite Team Indiana: There are a lot of things to like about Jurkin’s size. He’s a legit 7-footer and does a stellar job defending the lane. His length is such that he can often block shots by simply standing his ground with his arms up. He also runs the floor extremely well and shows a pretty nice touch from the foul line. A bit concerning, however, is his lack of upper body strength. It’s no fault of Jurkin’s, but he’ll need to improve in that area to become a real difference maker at the next level. Offensively, he’s still pretty raw and will need to continue developing a go-to post move or two. Still, his ceiling is high enough that it’s a bit surprising he’s not held in a higher regard by the national scouts.

Kentucky Hoopfest: Kenny Kaminski

by in Video | July 11th, 2010

A trio of Big Ten coaches — Bo Ryan, Tom Crean and Tom Izzo — were on hand Sunday at the Kentucky Hoopfest to watch 2012 Medina (OH) forward Kenny Kaminski. The 6-8, 210-pound forward from Indiana Elite Team Indiana talked to Inside the Hall about the first week of the open evaluation period and his upcoming decision on where he’ll attend college:

The Essentials: 6-7, 190-lb forward for Medina (OH) and Indiana Elite

The Schools: According to Rivals.com, Arizona State, Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State and Wisconsin have offered scholarships. Florida has expressed interest.

The Numbers: 17.0 ppg and 7.0 rpg for Medina, which finished 20-3.

The Leaders: Kaminski told reporters at the adidas May Classic that Indiana, Michigan State and Ohio State are his leaders. Kaminski will make his decision on July 31.

The Quote: “The main thing that really stuck out was the fanbase is incredible. I know Indiana’s been down a little bit the last couple of years, but it’s so loud in there. It tops any other school that I’ve ever been to or even seen on TV. Their atmosphere is ridiculous. The coaching is always great. I think the players work as hard as they can to get better and obviously they’ve improved since last year to this year. The campus is beautiful. I think Coach Crean is a great coach. I think he’s really going to be able to turn the program around.” – Kaminski to Inside the Hall.

The Scout Says: “Kaminski is a high level shooter who is showing a greater aptitude for grabbing rebounds around the rim and scoring in the paint. Those are still growth areas for him, but the 6-foot-7 forward is definitely coming along in those areas.” – Rivals.com analyst Brian Snow on Kaminski’s performance at the adidas May Classic.

Q & A: 2012 Medina forward Kenny Kaminski

by in Recruiting | March 30th, 2010

Medina (OH) forward Kenny Kaminski shot onto the IU recruiting radar last spring and summer as a sharpshooter that can fill it up. The 6-7, 180-pound forward helped lead Medina to a 20-3 record as a sophomore and averaged close to 17 points and seven rebounds per game.

Kaminski has scholarship offers from Indiana, Michigan State and Ohio State and Inside the Hall caught up with the 2012 forward on Tuesday for a Q & A:

On his high school season:

“We ended up 20-3, so it was really good. It was one of the best records Medina’s ever had. We ended up losing in the district championship to Avon Lake. Probably should have won the game, but they just played really well. They shot something like 67 percent and that’s hard to beat.”

On the upcoming AAU season:

“I’ll be with Indiana Elite with D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera, Hanner Perea and Peter Jurkin. I played with them last year for one tournament in the Bob Gibbons and they’re a bunch of great guys and they have a great team. So Coach Adams invited me to come out for a practice, actually this last weekend and I did, and I’ve decided now that I’m going to stay with them all year.”
