Report: Jeff Withey to Kansas

by in Recruiting | December 26th, 2008

We’re a bit late to the punch on this due to the holidays, but Jeff Withey won’t be bringing his game to Bloomington. Longtime Courier-Journal sports columnist Rick Bozich has the details:

Jeff Withey was going to be the next big thing at Louisville. Then he wasn’t — withdrawing an oral commitment to Rick Pitino to instead play for Arizona. The kid is from San Diego and the word was he wanted to play at a school closer to home.

That’s one.

Then he was going to be the next big thing at Arizona. Then he wasn’t — deciding to transfer from Arizona. He decided to transfer last fall after Lute Olson decided to quit coaching. A 7-footer, Withey never saw the court at Arizona.

That’s two.

Now Withey is on to his third school. And this time he picked Kansas, where he will be eligible to play in December 2009.

We had quite a few emails and questions about Indiana’s chances with Withey over the past few weeks, but the probability of Withey landing in Bloomington never seemed high. The uncertainty of the scholarship situation coupled with pre-exisiting relationships Withey held with other staffs made the Hoosiers a long shot.

So, about DeMarcus Cousins, Jeff Withey and the scholarship situation…

And that’s exactly what I’m going to do with an email I got early this evening from John, who asked about the possibility of Jeff Withey or DeMarcus Cousins (pictured) coming to IU and the scholarship situation beyond this year.

Let’s start with Withey and Cousins. Withey, a 7-0 freshman at Arizona, announced his intentions to transfer shortly after Lute Olsen’s resignation. Arizona initially refused the request, but granted permission last Tuesday. Shortly after being given his release, the San Diego native named a list of eight schools he would consider and IU was among the possibilities.

Cousins is the No. 2 player in the 2009 class and originally committed to UAB. (Cousins transferred this season to LeFlore, the same school that produced current Indiana guard Nick Williams.) After UAB refused to guarantee him a release if Mike Davis is removed as coach, Cousins decided to open his recruitment back up. According to a recent statement by LeFlore coach Otis Hughley, IU is one of many schools to inquire about Cousins.
