Video: Coleman, Hartman in City Tournament semis, final

by in Video | January 31st, 2012

2015 guard Jalen Coleman and 2013 wing Collin Hartman both played pivotal roles in Cathedral’s run to the City Tournament Championship last week.

Coleman, who has an early offer from the Hoosiers, scored three points in Cathedral’s semifinal win over Arlington and 15 points in Cathedral’s championship win over Heritage Christian. Hartman, who committed to Indiana in November of 2010, scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the semifinals and had 10 points and seven rebounds in the championship game.

Inside the Hall was in attendance for both contests and we’ve compiled highlights of each player in the embedded media players below:

Video: Jalen Coleman, Collin Hartman in loss to Tech

by in Video | December 13th, 2011

Collin Hartman and Jalen Coleman both turned in solid efforts, but it wasn’t enough on Friday night as No. 10 Cathedral fell 59-58 to Trey Lyles and host Arsenal Tech.

Hartman, a 6-foot-6 junior who is verbally committed to Indiana, finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Coleman, a 6-foot-2 freshman guard, added 13 points. He’s already got scholarship offers from Indiana and Notre Dame and interest from most of the Big Ten.

Watch highlights of both Coleman (jersey No. 5) and Hartman (jersey No. 33) in the embedded media players below:

Notebook: Poindexter visit, 2014 visitors, more

by in Recruiting | September 8th, 2011

Inside the Hall had a chance to catch up with Eric Gordon All-Stars coach Brian Keeton earlier this evening to discuss 2014 North Central forward Perry Poindexter’s unofficial visit to Bloomington on Wednesday.

Poindexter (pictured), who played junior varsity last season, now stands at 6-foot-7 with a 7-foot-2 wingspan and his tremendous upside has caught the eye of several Big Ten programs.

A couple of takeaways from our conversation with Keeton are blockquoted below:

Keeton on the visit: “It was a good visit. I thought things went real well. Perry really liked the staff. The visit was mostly just to get comfortable with the staff. Perry really hadn’t ever had the chance to meet or talk to Coach Crean, talk to any of those guys. It was the first time he got to interact with them. Perry, he was impressed and I think they’re going to start doing some good things down there.”

Keeton on what college coaches like about Poindexter: “Perry’s a big, big potential guy. He’s got the length, he’s a pretty athletic kid, he can get off the ground, he’s a great defender. Finding kids that want to defend at a younger age is kind of tough to do. He runs the floor extremely well.”

Keeton on the comparisons to former Purdue standout JaJuan Johnson at the same stage: “A lot of people give you the comparison of JaJuan Johnson. I know JaJuan real well. He played at the same high school I did. If Perry wants to work as hard as JaJuan used to work, then he’s got an opportunity to do some similar things. I think they compare him a lot because of body type and the fact that coming into college, JaJuan was more of a defender. Everybody was expecting him to be better on the defensive end than the offensive end. Perry’s at the same stage. He’s a better defender than he is an offensive player.”

Five takeways from the July evaluation period

by in Recruiting | August 15th, 2011

The month of July wrapped up for most of the Big Ten coaching staffs at the GRBA National Championships in Fort Wayne. As we look back at the 20-day evaluation period that included stops for Inside the Hall at the adidas Invitational, Kentucky Hoopfest, Best of the Midwest and the GRBA National Championships, here are our five biggest takeaways from July:

– Three schools emerge at the forefront of the Gary Harris recruitment: Throughout the recruiting process, 2012 Hamilton Southeastern guard Gary Harris has maintained that each school recruiting him has a chance to land the No. 11 ranked player in the country according to ESPN.com. Although he has yet to officially narrow down his school list, it appears as though three schools have emerged as the most likely candidates for Harris. At the 2011 GRBA National Championships, the five-star guard stated that the only schools he will definitely take official visits to are Michigan State, Purdue and Indiana. While this isn’t an official declaration of a “top three”, it appears to be a safe assumption that the Spartans, Boilermakers and Hoosiers are at the top of his list. He will likely work in his official visits between high school football games and practices this fall.

– Jeremy Hollowell displays dominance: It’s no secret that class of 2012 Indiana commitment Jeremy Hollowell is one of the most talented and versatile small forwards in the country. In the past, doubts have been raised about the consistency of the Lawrence Central standout’s play, but throughout much of July,  Hollowell showed the ability and sense of urgency truly necessary to be dominant. At 6-foot-8, Hollowell is a matchup nightmare for most defenders because he can score in a variety of ways. He has shooting range past the 3-point line and is able to get on a roll from deep and knock down jumpers off the catch as well as the dribble. Hollowell can also get to the rim with relative ease and score against contact or draw fouls to earn trips to the free throw line. He also has great length (7-foot-2 wingspan) which makes him a threat as an offensive rebounder and second chance scorer in the half court. As he showed during most of July, Hollowell has the talent and versatility to be a special player, especially if he plays with the same level of passion and aggression at all times.

Five story lines from the first July evaluation period

by in Recruiting | July 18th, 2011

(Photo credit: Jamie Owens of J. Scott Sports)

With the first of two live evaluation periods in the books, Inside the Hall takes a look at five Indiana basketball recruiting story lines from the opening ten days of July recruiting:

– Tom Crean earns frequent flier miles: Even with nine verbal commitments lined up for the Hoosiers’ next three recruiting classes and the current No. 1 class nationally in 2012, Crean blazed a trail across the country in the first ten-day period. Confirmed stops included the adidas Invitational in Indianapolis, the NY2LA Sports Next Level Invitational in Mequon (WI), the LeBron James Skills Academy in Akron, the Kentucky Hoopfest in Louisville, the Nike Peach Jam in North Augusta (SC), the adidas College Coaches Classic in Indianapolis, the NY2LA Sports Summer Jam in Mequon (WI), the Best Buy Summer Classic in Minneapolis and the Best of the Midwest in Indianapolis. Crean is often described as relentless on the recruiting trail and that was certainly the case as Indiana’s head coach worked from sun up until sun down scouting IU’s current commitments and top targets.

– Elite goes deep at adidas Invitational, Best Buy Classic: The Indiana Elite team that features Hanner Perea, Jeremy Hollowell and Yogi Ferrell was questioned by some for failing to win a tournament in the spring, but the trio of Indiana commits led Team Indiana into the semifinals of the loaded adidas event at North Central. After dropping their opening super pool contest to Shabazz Muhammad and Dream Vision, Elite bounced back to knock off the Andre Drummond-led Connecticut Basketball Club and the Atlanta Celtics. In tournament play, the hot hand of Hollowell (more on him in a bit) led Elite to three straight wins before falling 60-58 in the event’s semifinals on Saturday to New Heights. In Minneapolis at the Best Buy Classic, Elite advanced to the championship game and finished 5-1. For a group that’s playing together for the first time and possesses limited depth, Team Indiana’s play in the first evaluation period was impressive.

HD Video: Jalen Coleman Highlights at Best of the Midwest and adidas Invitational

by in Video | July 16th, 2011

Indiana’s recruiting work in the class of 2015 was confirmed on Friday when the Hoosiers extended a scholarship offer to Jalen Coleman, a 6-foot-2, 155-pound guard that will attend Indianapolis Cathedral next fall.

Kyle Neddenriep of The Indianapolis Star was the first to report the offer.

Tom Crean and the IU coaching staff tracked Coleman closely during the first 10-day July evaluation period, which included games at the adidas Invitational and the Best of the Midwest.

Coleman, who turned 15 on Friday, joined the Eric Gordon All-Stars before the start of the July evaluation period.

The Cathedral guard is playing alongside Bryant McIntosh, Perry Poindexter and Sean Sellers on the 15-and-under team that is coached by Brian Keeton.

Coleman told a group of reporters at the adidas Invitational that he was already receiving interest from Indiana, Michigan State and Purdue.

Inside the Hall was in attendance at the adidas Invitational and the Best of the Midwest and we’ve compiled over six minutes of Coleman video which is available after the jump.
