Sampson does work at Wolf Challenge

by Ryan Corazza in Media | August 13th, 2007

golfer.jpgWe’ve all been rather intrigued by Fuzzy Zoeller’s Wolf Challenge, namely because the group Kelvin Sampson was set to play with was um, rather eclectic.

Well, the golf shindig went down today and Coach Sampson, despite a rough start, held his own and finished second in the foursome.

But it was Sampson, just three holes after being serenaded by the Indiana University fight song from a group of about 50 fans, who had the most memorable shot.

On the par-4, 16th hole, Sampson chipped in over a bunker and from 53 yards away to win the $27,000 skin on the hole. He was partners with Zoeller and Daly on the hole, so the three split the earnings.

“A blind squirrel,” Sampson said of the shot.

“I was so bad early (in the round) these guys were trying to give me lessons,” said Sampson, who actually spent several minutes on the third hole watching and listening to a tip from Lee Trevino. “Then at the end, they were asking me for lessons.”

John Daly won the event, which I’m sure totally softens the blow of leading the PGA Championship over the weekend after day one, then finishing in a tie for 32nd. And by “totally softens the blow” I mean “I’m sure he doesn’t really care, as long as he has his diet Cokes and cigarettes.”

Man, I love John Daly.

Alice Cooper, Fuzzy Zoeller and Kelvin Sampson: Three names never to be used in conjunction again

by Eamonn Brennan in Media | August 7th, 2007

Just when you thought the pairings at Fuzzy Zoeller’s Louisville-based Wolf Challenge could not get any more, ahem, eclectic, well, guess who’s joining the field: Alice Cooper.

Seriously. Alice Cooper. I don’t know if you could have picked a person I least envision on a golf course, but according to Wikipedia, Cooper is actually a frequent celebrity golfer. When I think golf, I think gentrified white men sneaking around on Saturday morning while their wives give the children breakfast. I think Tiger Woods. I think Mike Weir, for some reason. I do not, however, think of Alice Cooper. Apparently, that is all about to change.

Does this man look like someone who’d be comfortable being out in the sun for longer than five minutes, let alone the five hours it will probably take this group to hack and plod their way to the 18th green?

No, I say to you. No he does not.

Kelvin Sampson to play golf at Wolf Challenge

by Ryan Corazza in Media | July 16th, 2007

gilmore.jpgI fashion myself at least a novice golfer — and a poor one at that — but I’d never heard of “wolf golf” until today. If you are unfamiliar with it yourself, hop on over here and get your learn on, son.

In any event, IU coach Kelvin Sampson will be participating in a wolf-style golf tournament August 12 and 13 in Sellersburg, IN., with the likes of Fuzzy Zoeller, John Daly and Lee Trevino.

Rounding out the field will be I.U. men’s basketball head coach, Kelvin Sampson. This will be Sampson’s first appearance and he will be going head to head against Zoeller, Trevino and Daly utilizing the “wolf” format. This will be Sampson’s second year as the head coach, and currently boasts ten consecutive 20-win seasons and 14 straight post-season appearances. He was also named National Coach of the Year in 1995 and 2002.

All four players will be wearing microphones while competing. The competition will be an eighteen-hole match utilizing the “wolf” format. Sampson will be able to use his USGA handicap.

I don’t know about you, but this foursome seems pretty grand — especially when you throw in the microphones. You have John Daly, he of booze and wife-scratched fame, Lee Trevino, who was excellent in Happy Gilmore, and Fuzzy Zoeller, who sued a Miami-based company for defamatory marks left on his Wikipedia entry. This is an interesting group of guys.

I just hope Sampson makes it out alive.
