Film Session: Evansville

by in Film Session | November 18th, 2011

Indiana shot 19-of-32 in the first half against Evansville en route to 51 points and a 24-point halftime lead.

Several of their looks were open and came with ease. A look at three such shots in the latest edition of Film Session.

1) HIGH-LOW ACTION

Jordan Hulls brings the ball down the court and dumps it off to Verdell Jones over on the right wing:

Jones dribbles up top and kicks back over to Hulls. Meanwhile, Watford gets inside position:

Zeller flashes to the free-throw line and Hulls passes the ball to him:

The Minute After: Evansville

by in The Minute After | November 16th, 2011

Thoughts on a 94-73 road win over the Purple Aces:

SO MUCH FOR THAT

They said the Purple Aces would test the Hoosiers. They said this could be Indiana’s first loss. After all, Tom Crean’s crew hadn’t won on the road in its last 17 attempts. And these Purple Aces were coming off a win over Butler.

They were wrong.

Indiana got off to a strong start from the opening tip on Wednesday night inside the Ford Center and never looked back. In the first 20 minutes, Victor Oladipo and Will Sheehey shut down Colt Ryan. Christian Watford, Verdell Jones, Jordan Hulls and Cody Zeller did the scoring. By half, they were up by 24. And though the second half wasn’t as crisp and got sloppy at times, the Hoosiers finished the night with a 21-point victory.

This team played with confidence. With hunger. With a chip on it shoulder. With strong shooting (65.3 eFG%), ball sharing (24 assists on 33 baskets) and defense. Three wins. Zero losses. On to the next one.

THERE’S CHRISTIAN

Watford failed to shoot well in Indiana’s first two games coming off injury, but Crean told the media after Sunday’s Chattanooga game he wasn’t worried.

And tonight, he came through for his coach. Watford got into the action early with two scores around the rim and also hit a couple threes. For the evening, the Alabama native finished with 15 points (5-of-7, 2-of-3 from three) and eight boards.

Another game, another guy stepping up and shooting lights out for the Hoosiers.

III

Jones hasn’t gotten enough love in this space. But he’s a big reason why the Hoosiers’ offense has looked strong this season. He’s not forcing the issue or doing more than he has to. And he’s finding the open man time and again. The senior dished out a team-high seven assists tonight to go along with a team-high 17 points, which was aided by a perfect 4-of-4 mark from beyond the arc.

Crean, Hulls and Jones talk Evansville

by in Media | November 15th, 2011

Indiana media relations just issued the following quotes from Tom Crean, Jordan Hulls and Verdell Jones as the Hoosiers prepare for a Wednesday night game at the Ford Center in Evansville:

Crean:

“Evansville is a very good team and I have a great deal of respect for Marty Simmons and his staff.. They run motion, but with a lot more patterns and they really get after you on the defensive end.”

“We are going to have to be at our best defensively and force them to take tough shots. We have to have good movement and spacing on offense and attack the glass at both ends.”

“We are really looking forward to get a chance to play in the new Ford Center. It’s going to be a great environment for us to play in. We will face a sellout crowd and they are coming off a big win. The IU fans in that area have always been very supportive and it would not surprise me to see a lot of fans from Washington there either.”

“Winning on the road certainly is a step that this group of guys knows it needs if it hopes to reach our goals.”

“A lot of the players on both teams are very familiar with one another. Colt Ryan really stepped up his game last year, but they have a number of guys who can hurt you. They are an experienced and veteran team that will take advantage of any opportunity you give them.”

“By coming back from a double-digit lead on Saturday, they showed that they are a resilient group.”

What to Expect: Evansville

Indiana will make the 135-mile trip southwest to Evansville on Wednesday night for its first road test of the season in the Purple Aces’ brand new $127 million Ford Center.

Here’s a look at what to expect out of Evansville, who finished last season 16-16 and fell to the Hoosiers 67-54 in Assembly Hall:

RYAN LEADS FOUR RETURNING STARTERS

Junior guard Colt Ryan, a former AAU teammate of Jordan Hulls, is one of four returning starters for fifth-year coach Marty Simmons. The Batesville product is arguably the best shooter in the Missouri Valley Conference and will be a key matchup for the Hoosiers on the perimeter. Ryan knocked down close to 41 percent of his 3-point attempts and shot 87 percent from the foul line as a sophomore. He scored 23 points in Evansville’s season opening win over Butler in overtime, but shot just 4-of-15.

Forward Kenny Harris is expected to anchor the frontcourt for the Purple Aces. The 6-foot-6 senior will give up a couple of inches to IU on the frontline, but was one of the top 10 defensive rebounders in the Missouri Valley Conference last season. Beyond Harris, Simmons has little returning experience or size in the paint. Senior guard Denver Holmes (7.8 ppg) and junior guard Ned Cox (7.3 ppg) should also play significant roles.
