Devin Ebanks selected for Boost Mobile Hoops Classic

by in Recruiting | July 20th, 2007

Devin EbanksIU’s top verbal commitment for the class of 2008, Devin Ebanks, has been selected to play in the second annual Boost Mobile Elite 24 Hoops Classic. The event will be held August 24 at Rucker Park in New York.

Here’s what the announcement from Rise Magazine had to say about Mr. Ebanks:

Devin Ebanks, St. Thomas More (Oakdale, Conn.): The ultra-talented Ebanks, who’s headed to Indiana, can do it all.

Among the other guys to check out in the event:

- Samardo Samuels: A talented big man from New Jersey headed to Louisville.
- Dexter Strickland: A junior-to-be super guard from St. Patrick’s in New Jersey that IU, along with every other major program, is said to be courting.
- BJ Mullens: Another big man headed to Big 10 rival Ohio State.
- Brandon Jennings: The top point guard from the class of 2008 who will play for Lute Olsen.

This will be nice exposure for Ebanks, as well as a chance for IU fans in the NYC area to check out his game. As far as I know, he’s only played in one AAU event this summer.

His selection only cements the belief that he’s one of the top 10 players nationally in his class and will make an immediate impact upon his arrival in Bloomington.

Scouting Report: Devin Ebanks

by in Recruiting | July 11th, 2007

Devin EbanksJody Demling covers recruiting for the Louisville Courier-Journal. Inside The Hall recently spoke with Demling about 2008 recruit Devin Ebanks. Visit Jody’s blog by clicking here.

Inside the Hall: You first saw Devin Ebanks at an AAU tournament in Bloomington back in early May. What stood out about Ebanks?

Jody Demling: Honestly, the first thing that stood out was not his talent – which is also very obvious – but in watching several games of his it was more his demanor on the floor and just the way he goes about playing the game. I remember one play in Bloomington – and grant it this was early spring and no college coaches there to impress – he went almost flying into the bleachers that were folded in on the sideline going after a loose ball out of bounds and it was near midcourt. Most players – of any caliber – would have just let that go. But Devin seems like a hard worker in everything that he does and that normally rubs off on teammates.

ITH: Ebanks has been compared by some recruiting analysts to both Rudy Gay and Kevin Durant. Who would you compare Ebanks to?

JD: I saw where Seth Davis said Rudy Gay and I swear I am not just copying what Mr. Davis said last week but I actually said it on the phone to several folks after the first few minutes I saw him in Bloomington. It’s really amazing because there are a lot of similarities to Gay’s game. I didn’t see Gay at the same age but have been told by several scouts – that I trust – that Ebanks plays a smarter and more consistent game. Now, that’s a pretty darn good billing!

ITH: Why do you think Devin ultimately chose Indiana over Miami (FL) and Rutgers?

JD: I think there were several factors that led to it and after talking to Devin a bit two were fairly easy – the rabid IU fans (he loves that stuff) and the academics. But one thing he keeps saying in interviews is that he needs to get better on defense and that coach Sampson is the man for him. No matter what the reasons, IU fans should be very happy.

Seth Davis sings the praises of Devin Ebanks

by in Recruiting | July 9th, 2007

davis.jpgIf you think clicking on a national writer’s column and reading a fawning take on a soon-to-be Hoosier is ever going to get old, well, you’re wrong. The latest props for an incoming IU recruit? Seth Davis’ take on Devin Ebanks, IU’s top 2008 get:

Skinny: Every kid growing up in Queens dreams of playing his college ball in … Bloomington, Indiana? That’s where Ebanks is headed next season, and the Hoosiers faithful will love what they’re getting. Ebanks reminds me of a young Rudy Gay, but mentally he’s ahead of where Gay was at this point. For example, the gold medal game at the USA Basketball Festival tipped off at 8:30 in the morning. Most of the players were barely awake when the game began, but Ebanks put himself through a hard warmup routine (he listened to an iPod as he went through the paces) and was the only guy ready to go when play started. As IU coach Kelvin Sampson likes to say, that shows he’s got a little mud in his blood.

Ain’t it great? Attracting top talent is one thing. Getting kids like Eric Gordon and Ebanks, players who seem to care every bit as much about intense self-improvement as their coach, well, what more can you ask for? Put your crimson shades on — that future is awfully bright.

A first look: Devin Ebanks

We’ll have more on IU’s latest to join the 2008 class, Devin Ebanks, in the upcoming weeks. But for now, thanks to Michael David Smith at the AOL Fanhouse, we’ll take our first look at the No. 11 player in the 2008 class according to Rivals.com.

This video reel is from the Rumble in the Bronx tournament, where Ebanks made his commitment to IU. You’ll also notice Greg Monroe, the No. 1 player in the 2008 class.

Jones speaks on his recruitment

by in Recruiting | June 29th, 2007

Eshaunte Jones, courtesy of RivalsYesterday, we heard comments from Eshaunte Jones’ AAU coach, Eric Vaughn, regarding a decision made by Jones to de-commit from Indiana and evaluate his options.

In a story by Greg Jones in today’s Ft. Wayne Journal Gazette, Jones spoke out on his decision to evaluate his options and why he made it:

“It wasn’t the Indiana coaches or anything,” Jones told the Herald-Times. “I still like them a lot. I just thought I needed to look at other schools. I felt like I hadn’t really taken the time to make the decision.”

Expect Jones to look the hardest at Cincinnati, UCLA and Missouri, three schools that were in the mix for him before he committed to Indiana back in November. Vaughn also mentioned that Illinois, Miami (FL) and Tennessee could get involved.

As far as the effect this will have on the 2008 class for Indiana, don’t expect it to be significant if Jones does indeed end up elsewhere. The Hoosiers are loaded with guards for this season (Eric Gordon, Armon Bassett, Jamarcus Ellis, A.J. Ratliff and Jordan Crawford) and have top 40 recruit Bud Mackey already on board for 2008.

You never like to lose an in-state kid, particularly one that is a great scorer like Jones, but expect the Hoosiers to ramp up their efforts to land point guard Dashan Harris, who already has an IU offer and would fit in well with Mackey and Devin Ebanks in the 2008 class.
