Devin Davis enjoys Saturday trip to Bloomington

by in Recruiting | October 3rd, 2010

After a stellar summer with the Eric Gordon All-Stars, 2013 Warren Central forward Devin Davis Jr. is quickly becoming one of the most sought after recruits in the state.

The 6-5, 190-pound sophomore already holds offers from Indiana, Purdue, Illinois and Xavier and is drawing interest from Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Tennessee, Butler.

Davis was among the impressive group of visitors at Saturday’s Indiana-Michigan football game and gave Inside the Hall a quick recap of the day.

“I didn’t play in the open gym, but it was pretty cool seeing most of the other players there like Jeremy Hollowell and Cody Zeller,” he said. “They took us out on the field for the football game and introduced us to some of the players.”

Davis, who was accompanied by his parents, said he talked briefly with Tom Crean and the IU head coach emphasized the importance of hard work and continued improvement.

“He just told me to keep working hard and don’t let the recruiting process get to my head. Just keep working hard and get better.”

Davis, who was recently invited to tryout for the 2011-2012 USA Basketball Developmental National Team, is just beginning to sort through the recruiting process.

“I’m just taking it all in and trying to get every visit I can, see every school I can, see the different kinds of campuses,” he said.

As for a return trip to Bloomington, the Indiana staff invited the Warren Central sophomore to return on October 15 for Hoosier Hysteria, but he’s not yet sure he’ll attend.

“They invited me,” Davis said. “I don’t know yet, I’ll have to talk to my Dad.”

Indiana Class of 2013 Rankings

The 2013 class in Indiana isn’t very big, but it’s full of talented players. This particular class is loaded with guards and wings, but lacks an elite big man. There are at least seven sure fire high-major players in this class and potential for more to emerge. If you have any questions about the rankings, feel free to address them in the comments.

10. Brenton Scott 6’0 PG (Ft. Wayne Northrop) - He’s not as highly regarded as his twin brother, but is still a good player and capable point guard. He’s more of a distributor than Bryson, looking to set up teammates rather than score the ball. He’s a solid 3-point shooter, and will fill it up if given the opportunity. He really gets after it on the defensive end and plays with a tough mentality.

9. Richard Freeman 6’7 PF (Lawrence Central) - Freeman is an athletic player with great length and bounce. He can shoot the mid-range with consistency, but I’d like to see him assert himself down low more. Added strength and aggressiveness down low would really benefit his game. His skill and production hasn’t caught up with his upside, but he’s got plenty of time to improve his game. He’s one of the better long term prospects in this class depending on his improvement and development.

8. Demetrius Jackson 6’1 PG (Mishawaka) – Jackson is a quick and smart point guard who uses his athleticism to break down the defense. He looks to set up teammates early and often which is good, but he needs to look to assert himself as a scorer as well. His shooting form is solid, but consistency can be an issue for him. As he improves his skill and relies less and less on physical talent, he’ll improve as a player.

Trio of 2013 talents grab early offers from IU

by in Recruiting | June 14th, 2010

As the recruiting game continues to place an emphasis on identifying talent at an early age, the Indiana staff is hitting the ground running with the class of 2013.

A trio of AAU teammates — Hamilton Southeastern’s Zak Irvin, Heritage Christian’s Basil Smotherman and Warren Central’s Devin Davis (pictured) — have been offered scholarships by Indiana.

“No one can say that Coach Crean isn’t putting the emphasis on Indiana kids now,” Matt Green, who coaches the group on the Eric Gordon All-Stars, told Inside the Hall. “He’s going after the top kids in that class.”

According to Green, Davis was offered on an unofficial visit to Bloomington last month while Irvin and Smotherman picked up offers at this past weekend’s Elite Camp.

The 6-6 Davis and 6-4 Smotherman both started varsity on their high school teams this past season, but Irvin, a 6-4 guard, has yet to log a minute above the junior varsity level. Still, the IU staff saw the potential to give Irvin the early offer, which was his first.

“With Irvin, it’s a little different because he didn’t play any varsity. He’s played good in the spring,” Green said. “Coach Crean puts his eyes on him at Elite Camp and likes what he sees. Some could say he pulled the trigger early with him never having varsity time and some could say he winds up being a legit, very-high profile kid and hey, he rolled the dice and got it right.”
