Hoosiers crush DIII opponent Anderson, 103-71

by in Recaps | November 8th, 2008

creananderson.jpgForgive us for not firing up Cover It Live or a game thread to help usher in Tom Crean’s debut in Assembly Hall, but let’s be realistic and treat tonight’s game for what it was: a glorified practice against a Division III team.

Crean’s team did what it was supposed to do: The Hoosiers started with a nice run (21-2 to start the game) and kept applying pressure to a team that was clearly overmatched.

The starting lineup featured four freshmen (Verdell Jones, Tom Pritchard, Nick Williams and Matt Roth) and Vincennes JC transfer Devan Dumes.

Pritchard (20 points and 10 rebounds), Dumes (22 points) and Jones (18 points) each turned in solid offensive performances and Williams showed a nice touch from the free throw line, going 6 of 7. Roth never got into the flow and totaled just five points in 22 minutes.

IU shot 83 percent from the foul line and 56 percent from the field, which could very well be a season-high when it’s all said and done. Overall, it was a solid performance for a team that will struggle to find consistency due to its inexperience, but should pull out a decent amount of wins on account of grit and hustle.

Your thoughts on the game and complaints about the BTN’s botched streaming experiment are welcome in the comments.

Note: IU is considering adding another walk-on, Kipp Schutz, who plays baseball for the Hoosiers and was all-conference in high school at Evansville Harrison. (Thanks to ITH reader Corey for the tip.)

2008 class will help bring stability to program

by in Commentary | April 24th, 2008

roth.jpgWhen the national recruiting gurus compile their final 2008 class rankings in late May, the class coming to Bloomington next fall will likely be missing from the top of many lists. There’s no big time name like Eric Gordon that will make a splash from the get-go.

A quick glance at the rankings on both Scout.com and Rivals.com shows no five-star or even a four-star player. And as disappointed as some people may be that Devin Ebanks, Bud Mackey, Tyler Zeller and a slew of other recruits won’t suit up in the cream and crimson, this is a pivotal class that should help stabilize the Indiana program.

While talent is a key part of winning at any level in basketball, finding guys to fit a specific role is arguably just as important, especially at the college level. And that’s exactly what each of these four players has a chance to do.

Matt Roth can flat out shoot the ball. Tom Pritchard is a blue-collar post player that IU fans will embrace. Nick Williams is a strong guard that has the talent to develop into a special player. And even though I’ve never seen him play, Devan Dumes won me over when he told me he loves to play defense. What’s not to like about that?

Dumes signs Letter of Intent with Indiana

by in Recruiting | April 22nd, 2008

dumes.jpgIn front of a large gathering of his friends and family on Tuesday night at the Wheeler-Dowe Boys and Girls club in Indianapolis, Devan Dumes signed his National Letter of Intent with Indiana.

“It was a beautiful night really. It was a blessing from the Lord. I had a lot of support,” Dumes told Inside the Hall. “I had a whole lot of fun with my family and friends.”

Dumes, who also considered Ohio State, Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado and UTEP, said things moved quickly once Tom Crean took over the Indiana program.

“Once Coach Crean took over, they got in touch with me. We had conversations, got them some film and it went from there.”

Dumes had set up visits with the other schools he was considering, but decided to stay close to home and ultimately, his relationship with Crean was a big factor in his decision to come to Bloomington.

Report: Devan Dumes commits to Indiana

by in Recruiting | April 20th, 2008

dumes.jpgUpdate: Vincennes press release on Dumes to Indiana

According to our friends over at the Hoosier Scoop, Tom Crean picked up his second commitment in the last 72 hours as Vincennes junior college guard Devan Dumes will use his two remaining years of eligibility in Bloomington.

Dumes played his freshman year at Eastern Michigan before playing this past season for former Louisville guard Everick Sullivan at Vincennes.

In 34 games for the Trailblazers, he averaged 16.9 points, 4 assists, 3.6 rebounds and shot 84 percent from the free throw line.

The 6-2, 180 lb guard is originally from Indianapolis, where he attended Decatur Central. According to his profile on Rivals.com, he was also considering Alabama, Arkansas, Ohio State, Colorado and UTEP.

Here is how Dumes described his game to Brian Snow of BuckeyeGrove.com:

“I’m a combo guard. I can score the ball well and I like to play defense. I am a very passionate defensive player. I am a passionate player all around. I feel like I shoot the three well, play off the pick and roll well, and I have always been someone who likes to take the big shot.”
