Bloomington entrepreneur Bill Cook passes away

by in Media | April 15th, 2011

Friday afternoon brought sad news for the entire Bloomington community as Bill Cook, the founder of The Cook Group, passed away at his home. He was 80.

Cook, who was born in Illinois and graduated from Northwestern, donated millions to charitable organizations throughout the state and also to Indiana University.

Cook’s donation of $15 million towards Cook Hall was the largest donation Indiana’s athletics department has ever received.

In September of 2010, Cook was listed as the 101st wealthiest American on the Forbes 400 with an estimated worth of $3.1 billion.

Tom Crean reacted to Cook’s passing with a series of tweets, which have been compiled below:

“I am stunned and saddened. It’s hard to do justice to what he meant to not only this university, community and state but even the world. He was literally a life-changing giant of a man and leader. Not many people can say they made the world a better place because of work they did, but Mr. Cook sure can. The contributions he made will continue to impact lives forever. Players, recruits and fans will constantly have the opportunity to be blessed by the presence of Cook Hall. We always show them the Bill and Gayle Cook plaques with the names of every Cook employee listed on them. It shows a token of the appreciation of those that worked with them. We never get tired of talking about how special the Cook family is and always will be.”

Cook Hall dedication set for Sunday

by in Media | April 19th, 2010

Cook Hall is no longer just a glimmer in the athletic department’s eyes. It’s a real, live, bouncing baby boy. And there’s an open-to-the-public dedication for the new practice center set for this Sunday.

Some details, from IU Media Relations:

Indiana University Athletics will formally dedicate its new basketball development center, Cook Hall, on Sunday, April 25. The 3:00 p.m. dedication ceremony will be conducted on the men’s basketball practice court inside the new facility, which is adjacent to Assembly Hall on the Bloomington campus.

“IU has a long basketball tradition comprised of legendary coaches, players, fans and victories,” said Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Fred Glass. “Cook Hall honors the hard work and determination of those who have made IU great, and it represents a renewed commitment to elevating both our men’s and women’s basketball programs into a new era of excellence.”

The dedication ceremony will feature remarks from IU President Michael A. McRobbie, Glass, Basketball Head Coaches Tom Crean and Felisha Legette-Jack, former IU basketball players Scott May, Quinn Buckner and Amy Metheny, and current student-athletes Jori Davis and Jordan Hulls. Jim Edson from the architectural firm Populous of Kansas City will present the building for dedication. Stephen L. Ferguson, chair of the Indiana University Board of Trustees Facilities Committee, will accept it before McRobbie conducts the formal dedication.

The dedication ceremony is open to the public. An informal reception and tours of the building will immediately follow the ceremony.

Alex will likely head to Bloomington when the media is allowed to tour Cook Hall, so we hope to have some pictures for those unable see it in the flesh on Sunday.

New basketball practice facility named Cook Hall

Here’s the lengthy press release, which just popped into our inbox:

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.- Indiana University President Michael McRobbie and Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Fred Glass today announced the single largest gift in the history of the department of athletics.  The Cook Group has made a $15 million gift to the For the Glory of Old IU capital campaign, which will be most immediately utilized to support and enhance the new basketball development center for the benefit of the men and women basketball program student athletes.  In recognition of this historic gift, Indiana University will permanently name the new basketball development center “Cook Hall”.  That naming was approved by the Indiana University Board of Trustees at its Friday meeting in Kokomo.

The Cook gift to IU Athletics is only part of the support that the Cooks have provided to IU through the years.  The family and the company have given generously to academic areas of the University including the School of Music, the School of Medicine, School of Education, and Wells Scholars Program and have endowed several academic chairs.  It is noteworthy that even this gift to Athletics will primarily support a facility dedicated to the instruction and preparation of men and women student athletes.
