Devin Davis Jr. and Collin Hartman commit to IU

by in Recruiting | November 21st, 2010

On a normal day, the commitments of perhaps the two best 2013 players in the state would get separate posts. But these times, it seems, are not normal in the world of Indiana basketball recruiting. We’ve entered uncharted territory, folks. The Indiana borders may officially be locked down.

As you’ve probably read by now if you’re on Twitter, both Warren Central’s Devin Davis Jr. and Cathedral’s Collin Hartman have committed to play for Tom Crean and Indiana.

Both commitments were broken by Kyle Neddenriep of the Indianapolis Star in a matter of ten minutes:

Warren Central’s Devin Davis Jr. (2013) just committed to Indiana, per his father.

Cathedral’s Collin Hartman (2013) has committed to Indiana, per his mother.

More on both of these commitments later, but for now, I think it’s safe to say that Tom Crean has caught fire on the recruiting trail.

Q & A: 2013 Cathedral forward Collin Hartman

I recently caught up with Cathedral sophomore Collin Hartman for a Q & A. The talented 6-6 forward talked about a variety of subjects including recruiting, Subway sandwiches, and preparing for the high school season.

Can you describe yourself as a player?

I’m pretty versatile. I think I can surprise some people with my perimeter skills compared to most guys my size. Depending on who’s guarding me I can go inside and score, and I can guard anyone my coach tells me to. I’ve just been working on making my overall game better. It’s funny to see the look on people’s faces when I surprise them with how versatile my game is.

What area of your game are you trying the hardest to improve?

Improving my perimeter skills as a whole. I want to be able to take any player off the dribble, and also be able to guard anyone on the court. It’s coming along just fine, but it’s a process of improving.

Is there anyone you try to model your game or skills after on the court?

I try to be my own player, but there are some guys I watch in college or the pros and try to imitate some of the things they do.

How do you work on improving your game?

My mom (former Butler Basketball Player) works with me a lot, and I also play with my brother for four hours everyday. I like being in the gym, I would say I’m definitely a gym rat.

Now that school has started, what are you doing to prepare for the season?

The first thing I’m doing is getting in the books, and making sure that I get a good start with all my classes. When I get home I’ll do my homework and grab a snack, but then I’m outside playing basketball all afternoon until dinner, and then I head back outside again. I’m out there doing dribbling drills and working on my moves. At school I dribble a tennis ball around all day, and I honestly think it has helped my ball handling be more consistent. My teachers wonder why I have a tennis ball, but I tell them I have to work on my ball handling.

Indiana Class of 2013 Rankings

The 2013 class in Indiana isn’t very big, but it’s full of talented players. This particular class is loaded with guards and wings, but lacks an elite big man. There are at least seven sure fire high-major players in this class and potential for more to emerge. If you have any questions about the rankings, feel free to address them in the comments.

10. Brenton Scott 6’0 PG (Ft. Wayne Northrop) - He’s not as highly regarded as his twin brother, but is still a good player and capable point guard. He’s more of a distributor than Bryson, looking to set up teammates rather than score the ball. He’s a solid 3-point shooter, and will fill it up if given the opportunity. He really gets after it on the defensive end and plays with a tough mentality.

9. Richard Freeman 6’7 PF (Lawrence Central) - Freeman is an athletic player with great length and bounce. He can shoot the mid-range with consistency, but I’d like to see him assert himself down low more. Added strength and aggressiveness down low would really benefit his game. His skill and production hasn’t caught up with his upside, but he’s got plenty of time to improve his game. He’s one of the better long term prospects in this class depending on his improvement and development.

8. Demetrius Jackson 6’1 PG (Mishawaka) – Jackson is a quick and smart point guard who uses his athleticism to break down the defense. He looks to set up teammates early and often which is good, but he needs to look to assert himself as a scorer as well. His shooting form is solid, but consistency can be an issue for him. As he improves his skill and relies less and less on physical talent, he’ll improve as a player.

Scouting notes from Saturday’s Elite Camp

by in Recruiting | August 30th, 2009

watford040909The following are notes submitted to Inside the Hall from someone that attended IU’s Elite Camp this past Saturday in Bloomington. It’s important to note that this information is not from anyone affiliated with the university. These notes have been slightly tweaked by yours truly.

+ By far the player most impressive on Saturday was Jordan Hulls. He is amazing at the pick-and-roll.  A former IU player that had never seen him play called him a stud. It will be really difficult to keep him off the court, so you could see a lot of Jeremiah Rivers and Hulls together because of their ball handling skills.

+ Maurice Creek is lights out.  He should average 12+ ppg as a freshman.  He can score from any place on the floor and is a solid rebounder.

+ Derek Elston is a beast.  He seems bigger than Tom Pritchard and has much more range.  He is also more athletic than I anticipated.  He could play 25-30 minutes a game.

+ Christian Watford (pictured) is very good.  He plays better in transition and is more of a three but will have to play the four on this team.

+ Seems like it’s going to be tough for Matt Roth, Bobby Capobianco and Bawa Muniru to get minutes.  Rivers, Creek, Hulls, Devan Dumes and Verdell Jones will eat up the minutes at guard.  Pritchard, Elston and Watford should play the four and five with the others playing when foul trouble arises.

Notes from Saturday’s Elite Camp

by in Recruiting | August 30th, 2009

etherington070609Here’s what we’ve been able to piece together from Saturday’s Elite Camp that took place at Assembly Hall:

+ Both of IU’s 2011 commitments, Austin Etherington (pictured) and Matt Carlino, played well. Carlino’s shot reportedly looked much better than it did over the summer.

+ 2011 Muncie Central guard Jeremiah Davis attended the camp and the buzz continues to be that IU is in great shape with him. Davis is an AAU teammate of Etherington on Indiana Elite Team Indiana.

+ Current NBA players Eric Gordon, Steve Novak and Jared Jeffries all attended the camp. Both Novak and Jeffries spoke to the campers and Novak was spotted in IU shorts.

+ 2012 campers: Lawrence Central’s Jeremy Hollowell, Southport’s Kellon Thomas, Bloomington South’s T.J. Bell and Menomonee Falls (WI)’s J.P. Tokoto. Ron Patterson did not attend and D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera is spending the weekend taking unofficial visits.

+ 2013 campers: Jeffersonville’s Darryl Baker and North Oldham (KY)’s Darryl Hicks. I had a chance to see both players over the summer and they both have a chance to be special. Jody Demling of The Louisville-Courier-Journal is reporting that Indianapolis Cathedral’s Collin Hartman and Brent and Bryson Scott of Ft. Wayne Northup attended.

+ 2011 guard/forward Aaron Thomas from Cincinnati Aiken (OH) is in Bloomington this weekend, but we’re not sure if he played in the camp. The IU staff followed Thomas closely in July at the Kentucky Hoopfest.

+ Indianapolis Pike’s Marquis Teague did not make it to the camp and all signs continue to point toward Louisville for Teague.

+ 2011 Gary Lew Wallace standout Branden Dawson opted to attend Marquette’s ‘specialty’ camp according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Significant here is that Dawson is considered a Purdue lean and the Boilermakers also held a camp of their own on Saturday. The Journal Sentinel report also claims that Michael Cobbins, Vander Blue, Reggie Smith, Jeremy Lamb and DeJuan Marrero attended the Marquette camp.
