Chris Braswell picks Charlotte; Crean speaks to IU students

by Alex Bozich in Media | October 7th, 2008

– Chris Braswell, teammate of Maurice Creek at Hargrave Military Academy, made a visit to Charlotte last weekend and committed to the 49ers on Monday afternoon. Although Braswell did hold an offer from IU, the scholarship situation after Bawa Maniru’s commitment drastically hampered IU’s shot of landing him.

– Tom Crean spoke to the Indiana students yesterday and both Zach Osterman and Matt Dollinger of The Indiana Daily Student were there to recap the festivities. According to Dollinger, one of the common themes during the Q & A portion with Crean was the possibility of a revamped student section in Assembly Hall:

After discussing the student section for awhile, Crean told a story about how at Marquette he helped unify the student section and all of the students eventually wore gold shirts or gold sweater vests. When he asked the audience if they would like the student section to be unified the crowd erupted.

“I would like that too. Is that something you all would like to do? Wear the same t-shirt or something like that? Well then, that’s something that has to be looked at,” he said.

“Give me time. Give me time to look at that. And we’ll go from there. We have to pack Hoosier Hysteria first, no matter if we have shirts on or not.”

I think we all agree that the student seating at Assembly Hall is not ideal, but is it really as bad as some make it out to be? I’ve been to plenty of games at the Hall and it’s one of the best experiences in the country hands down. It’ll be interesting to see how Crean gets involved in the discussions about student seating and ultimately, if any changes are made to the current situation.

Who will fill the last scholarship for 2009?

by Alex Bozich in Recruiting | July 24th, 2008

Tom Crean, Bennie Seltzer and Tim Buckley (and perhaps the third assistant) are in Las Vegas this week watching parts of three different AAU events. The burning question that IU fans are still pondering: Who will fill the last available spot for the 2009 recruiting class?

The most likely candidates: Roger Franklin, Chris Braswell, Christian Watford and Stephan Van Treese. IU appears to be in solid standing with Franklin and Watford. The staff is looking hard at Braswell, who is playing AAU with Maurice Creek. Braswell has reclassified from 2008 to 2009 and will play alongside Creek next season at Hargrave Military Academy. And the latest we’ve heard on Van Treese is that it’s a long shot he’ll end up in Bloomington.

Based on what we know about all four players, the two most likely to end up in candy stripes seem to be Franklin and Braswell. Watford does have an unofficial trip planned to Bloomington, but the recruiting machine known as Memphis is reportedly out in front for his services. (And wherever there’s Memphis, there’s usually Worldwide Wes.) Perhaps his visit can swing momentum towards Indiana.

Put yourself in the staff’s position: Of these four guys, who is your main target and why? Do you want the guy who flat out goes after it every time he takes the floor in Franklin? Is Braswell, a 6-8 bruiser, your guy? Or maybe it’s Christian Watford, an athletic wing who can score in variety of ways? Or does the fact that Van Treese is from Indiana still lead you to believe that he should get an offer? Thoughts in the comments, por favor.
