Signing day Q & A: Jody Demling

by in Recruiting | November 11th, 2008

cwatford3.jpgThe early signing period starts Wednesday and Inside the Hall caught up with Jody Demling of The Courier-Journal to get the scoop on Indiana’s class.

Jody’s radio show, “Sports Night,” will air a recruiting special Tuesday at 6PM that will feature interviews with Jordan Hulls, Bobby Capobianco, Christian Watford and Derek Elston. Fans in the Southern Indiana/Louisville area can hear the show on 93.9 FM and streaming is available here.

Inside the Hall: IU’s 2009 class is top five nationally by just about every recruiting service out there. Where do you rank Tom Crean’s first fall signing class and tell us what kind of impact fans can expect from this group.

Jody Demling: There might not be a top five or 10 guy in the class, but when you look at it as a whole this is a really, really good class and the Hoosier fans should be excited. I was talking with a couple of the guys this week and the theme that coach Crean must be preaching is “pieces to the puzzle” because several mentioned that phrase. But I think it’s so true, this group is six pieces to the Indiana puzzle that Crean is trying to put together and they all seem like perfect fits for the program.

ITH: Christian Watford is the big name in the class, but a lot of fans haven’t had a chance to see him play since he’s from Birmingham. What’s the scouting report on Watford and is he the best player in IU’s class?

JD: Christian is the highest ranked guy in the class and will be a solid addition to the Hoosier program. He has a body ready for the college game, is a solid shooter and can play a number of positions. But I personally think when it’s all said and done that Maurice Creek will be the best of the bunch. I love his game and his determination.

Bawa Muniru attends Oklahoma State’s midnight madness?

by in Recruiting | October 20th, 2008

According to a report on NewsOK.com, 2009 commitment Bawa Muniru attended midnight madness at Oklahoma State over the weekend:

The men’s basketball team will have six recruits in attendance. Three of them – Ray Penn, Roger Franklin and Fred Gulley – are already committed to the Cowboys.

The other three are former Arizona commitment Reger Dowell and 2010 recruit Jamison Sterns, both from Duncanville, Texas. The Cowboys are also expecting 7-foot center Bawa Muniru, who is reportedly committed to Indiana.

No word on how this affects Muniru’s commitment to Indiana, but it’s not often that a committed recruit attends Midnight Madness at another school. Perhaps the allure of the Briscoe girls has already worn off for Bawa.

Bawa Muniru now a Hoosier, so sayeth Scout.com

Rejoice, Hoosier fans. According to Scout.com (via the Hoosier Scoop), this man is now an Indiana Hoosier:

Despite what he told Jody Demling about wanting to go on other visits and that his mind was far from made up, looks like Tom Crean and company (as well as four lovely coeds) wooed this young man from Ghana.

Sound the trumpets, we’ve got a big man with some upside.

Is Bawa Muniru the final piece to the 2009 puzzle?

So, I think if there’s anything we’ve asked for, it’s a legit big man in the 2009 class. Or any class, really. (Perhaps it’s just me that’s asking for that. But outside of D.J., we’ve struggled up front in recent years.)

Well, with 6-11 center Bawa Muniru (far left) on campus this weekend for a visit (a visit it appears he had fun on from the looks of this picture sent via a tipster), perhaps we’ve found our man — though he does have the “project” tag labeled on him. He’s only been playing ball a few years, but is ranked in the Rivals Top 150. And then there’s this little nugget:

He played last season in Alabama, but enrolled this fall in Charis Prep in North Carolina. Charis is not certified by the NCAA, but if his academics are in order for the previous three years, he could do enough work on his own to be eligible in 2009 or he could spend a year in prep school.

A bit curious, but hopefully his grades are in order if he agrees to come play for IU.

And really from this picture, how can you not like this dude already?
