Coaching carousel could put recruits back in play

by in Rumors | March 13th, 2011

As of Sunday afternoon, the list of Division I schools that have made a coaching change has reached, by our count, 12.

The list: Arkansas, Bradley, Eastern Washington, Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State, Manhattan, Oklahoma, Providence, Texas Tech, Texas A & M-CC, Towson and Utah.

More, like Sidney Lowe at N.C. State, are likely to follow in the coming days and weeks.

And in an effort to keep you up to date on which recruits could potentially re-open the process, here’s a list of the notable names that have signed with the above schools. (All ratings are from ESPN.)

- Arkansas: B.J. Young (No. 4 PG), Ky Madden (No. 10 SG), Hunter Mickelson (No. 8 PF), Aaron Ross (No. 23 SF), Devonte Abron (No. 28 PF)

- Bradley: Remy Abell (No. 67 PG)

- Georgia Tech: Julian Royal (No. 10 PF), Bobby Parks, Jr. (No. 31 SG)

- Providence: Markus Crider (No. 42 SF), Kyan Anderson (No. 39 PG)

Report: B.J. Young commits to Arkansas

by in Recruiting | September 5th, 2010

It only took one official visit for Florissant (MO) guard B.J. Young to make a decision.

The five-star guard has given a verbal commitment to John Pelphrey and the Arkansas Razorbacks, according to Dave Telep of Scout.com.

Young told Inside the Hall last weekend that he hoped to visit Indiana and also hoped to host the coaching staff for an in-home visit.

The 6-3, 175-pound combo guard is rated the No. 17 prospect nationally by Scout and No. 18 by Rivals.

Five minutes with McCluer North (MO) guard B.J. Young

by in Recruiting | August 29th, 2010

After a breakout summer on the AAU circuit, McCluer North (MO) guard B.J. Young shot up to five-star status in the recruiting rankings.

Fresh off being named the MVP of the Five-Star Super Session in New York, Inside the Hall caught up with the 6-3 combo guard for the latest on his recruitment:

On the schools currently involved in his recruitment:

“Indiana, Arkansas, Illinois State, I think Kansas and Memphis are starting to get into it, but I don’t really know yet. Baylor is one of them. Iowa, Iowa State, Marquette, Louisville, Providence, North Carolina State.”

On where he stands with his recruitment:

“I’m still really open.”

On his decision to take an official visit to Arkansas:

“I really like Arkansas. I got family from down in Arkansas. They wanted to set up a visit with me, so I got a date set up with them.”

On his recent contact with Indiana:

“I talk to Indiana regularly. They get two calls per week. I still talk to them regularly. I like them a lot. Me and Indiana are still really close.”

On potentially taking an official visit to Bloomington:

“I think they want me to take an official visit and they want to make an in-home visit too.”

On his timetable for making a decision:

“Probably after I take all of my visits and sit down with my family and talk. So probably in November sometime.”

For the first time since the conclusion of the July evaluation period, we’ve updated our 2011 Recruiting Board and as discussed frequently in the comments, the board is focused on Cody Zeller and B.J. Young. Both prospects are now rated in the top 20 of both Rivals and Scout.

We’ll be updating our 2012 Board in the coming weeks, but for now, check out the updated 2011 Board at the link below.

Austin Etherington lands in updated Scout.com Top 100

by in Recruiting | August 24th, 2010

After falling from Scout’s post-spring Top 100, Hamilton Heights (IN) guard and IU commit Austin Etherington is once again ranked by the national recruiting service led by Dave Telep.

Etherington missed time early in the AAU season with a stress fracture, but put together a solid July. He’s now rated the No. 98 prospect nationally by Scout.

Etherington told Inside the Hall earlier this month that he let his play in Las Vegas speak for itself: ”I felt like I proved myself in Vegas and other times in July, so we’ll just see what happens (with the rankings),” he said.

Two other prospects with heavy IU interest – Washington (IN) forward Cody Zeller and Florissant (MO) guard B.J. Young – are in Scout’s Top 20. Zeller checks in at No. 16 and Young is No. 17.

Other prospects of note in the rankings: Branden Dawson (15), Chane Behanan (29), Marshall Plumlee (40), Michael Chandler (67), Aaron Thomas (72) and Naadir Tharpe (94).

Indiana leading for B.J. Young?

by in Recruiting | July 19th, 2010

Matt Norlander, the editor of College Hoops Journal and a contributor to the Dagger at Yahoo Sports, reported earlier today via Twitter that Indiana is the top school for 2011 point guard B.J. Young.

Here are Norlander’s tweets:

PG BJ Young, the No. 21 Scout.com ’11 recruit, just told me his top five, in order, are: Indiana, Ark, Baylor, Marquette, Illinois State

He also said Prov, Purdue, Iowa have offered scholarships within the past 2 weeks, and Va. Tech has shown interest but not pulled trigger

This report by Norlander, coupled with our story last week on Young, support our decision to move him ahead of Jeremiah Davis into the second spot on the 2011 Recruiting Board heading into the second 10-day July evaluation period.

Young said last week that Indiana is “probably one of the top schools I would like to go to.”

Scout.com ranks Young, who has yet to play a full high school season, the No. 4 point guard nationally in the 2011 class.
