Around the Hall: More on IU-BC, ACC-Big Ten Challenge

by in Media | December 2nd, 2010

Around the Hall is recommended reading from the Inside the Hall crew. So go ahead, get your read on.

+ The Big Ten Geeks over at the Big Ten Network go into a little detail on IU’s defense in the BC game and well, it’s not good:

Indiana had a historically bad night on the defensive end in their 88-76 loss at Boston College. Since at least 2002 (the furthest back I can find efficiency data), no Hoosier team had allowed an opponent to score 1.45 points per possession, and this season’s version just did it. Boston College turned it over on just 10 percent of their possessions, rebounded over half their misses, shot 58 percent from two, and nailed 42 percent from three. The Eagles basically got anything they wanted, and some pretty good offense from Indiana (with a genuinely low turnover rate!) wasn’t enough to keep up.

+ Our old friend Eamonn (you remember him, right?) weigh-ins in briefly on the loss in his ACC-Big Ten Challenge recap on ESPN’s College Basketball Nation:

This wasn’t the greatest game in the world — it contained shades of Wake Forest-Iowa from Tuesday night, and yes, I probably just made a bunch of Wake fans angry again — but there were good takeaways for both teams. The Hoosiers proved they can score and compete with decent teams on the road, even if their defense needs serious work. Boston College proved it can play a more intelligent and composed brand of basketball under new coach Steve Donahue. Neither team looks tourney-bound, but neither team looked truly horrible either, and given where both of these programs are, those count as steps in the right direction.

+ Jeff Eisenberg at the Dagger on Yahoo has four winners and four losers from the ACC-Big Ten Challenge and a point guard from Duke tops the list:

How scary is it that Duke returns last year’s Final Four MVP in Kyle Singler and a guard who made numerous preseason all-American teams in Nolan Smith and yet it’s readily apparent that neither of them are the Blue Devils’ best player? Irving became a freshman star on Wednesday night in the mold of Derrick Rose or John Wall, scoring 31 points on 8-of-12 shooting and showing an ability to get to the rim at will.

Complete ACC-Big Ten Challenge schedule released

by in Schedule | May 12th, 2010

Cornell v Wisconsin

Per IU Media Relations:

Indiana will travel to Boston College to face the Eagles in the 12th annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge Presented by Dick’s Sporting Goods on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN3.com. This will be the fourth meeting between the two teams, and first since the 1996 NCAA Tournament.  BC won that game, 64-51, and in the 1994 NCAA Tournament, 77-68.  IU won the first meeting in 1983 in Indianapolis, 72-66.

“Boston College has one of the most experienced teams and they are battle tested and our players will have the opportunity very early in the season to compete against a nationally prominent program away from home, much like the Pitt game last year,” said IU Head Coach Tom Crean. “I have a lot of respect for their new coach Steve Donahue, who brought his Cornell team to Assembly Hall two years ago.  It will be an exciting matchup for the players and fans.”

IU will return all five starters from last season and 12 lettermen, while BC could return 11 seniors or juniors to their roster.

The Big Ten is the defending Challenge champion, defeating the ACC by a 6- 5 margin a year ago. Road teams won six of the 11 games in 2009, and seven of the contests were decided by seven points or less, including four games won by four points or fewer.

IU will meet Wake Forest in ACC/Big Ten Challenge

by in Media | April 15th, 2008

The pairings for the tenth annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge were announced today and Indiana will play at Wake Forest on December 3. You can read the complete release from the Big Ten here.

Here is the complete schedule:

  • December 1: Wisconsin at Virginia Tech
  • December 2: Duke at Purdue; Clemson at Illinois; Ohio State at Miami (FL); Virginia at Minnesota; Iowa @ Boston College
  • December 3: North Carolina vs. Michigan State (at Ford Field); Indiana at Wake Forest; Michigan at Maryland; Florida State at Northwestern; Penn State at Georgia Tech

The Demon Deacons are going to be stacked in the paint with their incoming freshmen Al-Farouq Aminu, Tony Woods and Ty Walker. They’re also returning their two leading scorers, James Johnson and Indianapolis Pike product Jeff Teague, who were both freshmen this past season. IU is 3-4 all-time in the challenge and Wake Forest is 7-1. Also, Duke at Purdue will be tough for me to pick a rooting interest. Can both teams somehow lose?
