Inside the Hall | Indiana Hoosiers Basketball News, Recruiting and Analysis » Recruiting http://www.insidethehall.com Thu, 09 Feb 2012 16:42:46 +0000 en hourly 1 http://wordpress.org/?v=3.3.1 Fischer hopes to return early next week http://www.insidethehall.com/2012/02/08/fischer-hopes-to-return-early-next-week/ http://www.insidethehall.com/2012/02/08/fischer-hopes-to-return-early-next-week/#comments Thu, 09 Feb 2012 02:31:57 +0000 Alex Bozich http://www.insidethehall.com/?p=18815 It’s been just four weeks since Luke Fischer suffered a chipped bone in his right knuckle that required surgery, but the 6-foot-9 junior from Germantown, Wisconsin says he’s nearing a return.

“We know that I get my pins out next week on Monday [the 13th]. We have a game on the 14th, the next day,” Fischer told Inside the Hall. “If the doctor releases me, we’re hoping to get out there a little bit and see what it starts to be like. I don’t think I’ll be playing a lot, but it will just feel good to get back out there.”

Without Fischer in the lineup, Germantown (18-0) has continued to dominate the highest level competition in Wisconsin.

The Warhawks, ranked No. 1 in the latest Associated Press Division I top ten poll, have not played a game closer than 11 points all season. Watching his teammates succeed during his absence has only made Fischer more hungry to return.

“It’s terrible [being out],” he said. “Even during practice now I’m getting bored sitting out, I just want to get back in there. I never thought I’d ever say that but I just want to get out there and play again.”

Through 12 games prior to his injury, Fischer was averaging 16.8 points per game.

Fischer’s been unable to do much with his right hand since suffering the injury on Jan. 12. So he’s increased work on other parts of his game.

“A lot of running. We have our strength coach come in and do some like band work with me,” Fischer said. “Dribbling, speed and quickness stuff. A lot of left-handed hook shots and left-handed tips. I’m getting real good dunking with my left hand, too. It kind of feels weird, but it’s going to help my game a lot.”

One thing Fischer hasn’t had to worry about in recent weeks is recruiting. The 6-foot-9 junior made a verbal commitment to Indiana on Dec. 31 during an unofficial visit for the Ohio State game.

Still, Fischer found himself wearing a Wisconsin T-shirt recently thanks to his teammate Zak Showalter, who will walk-on for the Badgers next fall.

“We always mess around with each other,” he laughed. “When Wisconsin and Indiana played, we had a bet. Whoever lost had to wear the winning team’s stuff the next day. I actually ended up wearing a Wisconsin shirt the next day. I didn’t like it at all, but we have fun like that.”

Video, scouting notes: Hanner Mosquera-Perea http://www.insidethehall.com/2012/02/07/video-scouting-notes-hanner-mosquera-perea/ http://www.insidethehall.com/2012/02/07/video-scouting-notes-hanner-mosquera-perea/#comments Wed, 08 Feb 2012 03:16:09 +0000 Joe Eberhardt http://www.insidethehall.com/?p=18803 2012 LaPorte La Lumiere forward and IU signee Hanner Mosquera-Perea scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds in a 61-45 win over Detroit Country Day on Saturday at Lawrence Central.

Inside the Hall was there and we’ve compiled over a minute of highlights of the high-flying senior in the embedded media player below:

Read our scouting notes from Mosquera-Perea’s performance after the jump.

Notes: Mosquera-Perea spent some time on the bench with foul trouble, but the 225-pound forward was able to make an impact on a La Lumiere team stacked with Division I talent. He threw down two thunderous alley-oop dunks, which he’s become known for, that created a buzz in front of a nearly full house at Lawrence Central.

Mosquera-Perea also scored a couple baskets in the paint against contact and showed that he isn’t afraid to play with aggression around the basket. His fast-paced motor and ability to run the floor, which were on display last spring and summer, have continued to improve.

Mosquera-Perea struggled to score from further away from the basket, but he looked comfortable shooting the mid-range jump shot and going to the right-handed hook shot in the post. Mosquera-Perea said afterward that he continues to work on his perimeter shot and is trying to use his hook as his “go-to” move.

He’s solid when going after the ball as a rebounder, but Mosquera-Perea can struggle at times to catch the ball on offense. But at the end of the day, Hanner Mosquera-Perea showed why he has the potential to be an impact piece at Indiana. He has good size, unbelievable athleticism, is a capable defender and shot blocker and plays with a great amount of energy. He’ll need to continue to diversifying his ability to score, improve his hands overall and spend time in the weight room, but the tools are there for him to grow into a difference-maker.

Video Q & A, scouting notes: Devin Davis Jr. http://www.insidethehall.com/2012/02/07/video-q-a-scouting-notes-devin-davis-jr/ http://www.insidethehall.com/2012/02/07/video-q-a-scouting-notes-devin-davis-jr/#comments Tue, 07 Feb 2012 19:10:07 +0000 Joe Eberhardt http://www.insidethehall.com/?p=18793 2013 Warren Central forward and IU commitment Devin Davis Jr. scored 17 points in a 69-62 overtime win over Broad Ripple at Lawrence Central on Saturday afternoon. Inside the Hall was there and caught up with the junior as he met with the media following the win:

Watch a video Q & A with Warren Central coach Greg Graham and read our scouting notes from Davis’ performance after the jump.

Notes: The Indiana-bound junior knocked down eleven free throws and showed his knack for getting to the charity stripe and converting freebies at a reliable rate.

As usual, Davis played with a great motor and attacked opponents off the dribble to earn easy looks or trips to the line.

The 6-foot-6 forward also was outstanding on the glass and showed that he can be a factor as a rebounder on both sides of the ball. A bulk of Davis’ points can be attributed to his aggressiveness on the offensive glass and willingness to absorb contact in the paint.

Overall it was a solid showing for Davis, who flashed the ability to be productive and lead his team to a win despite not scoring a ton of points from the floor.

Knight calls state of recruiting a “cesspool beyond belief” http://www.insidethehall.com/2012/01/28/knight-calls-state-of-recruiting-a-cesspool-beyond-belief/ http://www.insidethehall.com/2012/01/28/knight-calls-state-of-recruiting-a-cesspool-beyond-belief/#comments Sat, 28 Jan 2012 16:52:32 +0000 Alex Bozich http://www.insidethehall.com/?p=18355

On Saturday morning’s edition of College Gameday from Tucson, Arizona, a conversation about the NCAA’s current graduate transfer rule yielded some interesting comments from former IU coach Bob Knight.

Knight was asked by host Rece Davis for his opinion on the current rule that allows student athletes that have graduated to transfer to another program without sitting out a season.

The caveat of that rule, of course, is that the school the athlete is transferring to must have a graduate program not available at his current school.

Here’s what Knight had to say on that rule as well as his broader comments on the overall state of recuiting:

“I think there are so many things wrong with recruiting in college basketball today. The summer people that are involved. The agents that are involved. The coaches that are involved with agents and summer people. Now, what’s going to happen when everybody starts recruiting that kid that has finished his degree? And what’s going to happen when people offer this kid A, B or C and somebody else offers a kid D. I don’t agree with it at all.”

“I don’t think you have anything wrong with it [the graduate transfer rule] until it comes down to the point where are a lot of people are recruiting that kid and then they’re bidding for that kid. That’s something that I think would come up very, very quickly in that whole situation.”

“I don’t have any problem with the kids transferring [and what Hubert Davis has talked about]. But I have a real problem with the way recruiting has gone in college today. I mean let’s face it, you’ve got college coaches that are paying summer coaches. You’ve got agents out there that have a deal with a college to send a kid to that particular school. That’s what I think has happened with college recruiting. I think it’s a cesspool beyond belief today. And I just wouldn’t want to see something else added to it.”

“I think you’ve got to give severe penalties. You they talk about they never want to give out the death penalty. But I think severe penalties for recruiting violations would be almost the only way that you could curb it.”

Q & A: Luke Fischer, father talk Indiana decision http://www.insidethehall.com/2012/01/01/q-a-luke-fischer-father-talk-indiana-decision/ http://www.insidethehall.com/2012/01/01/q-a-luke-fischer-father-talk-indiana-decision/#comments Sun, 01 Jan 2012 18:20:18 +0000 Alex Bozich http://www.insidethehall.com/?p=17479 Luke Fischer became the third verbal commitment in IU’s 2013 recruiting class on Saturday night when he gave a verbal pledge to the Hoosiers following their 74-70 win over No. 2 Ohio State.

Inside the Hall caught up with IU’s latest commitment and his father, Jim, on Sunday afternoon to talk about the big decision:

LUKE FISCHER

On why he decided to commit to Indiana on Saturday:

“Coming down here, we felt like it could happen, I could make my choice. I just wanted to see what the game atmosphere was like. When we talked with Coach Crean after the game, it just felt like the right thing to do.”

On if he came on the unofficial visit with the mindset that he might commit:

“Yeah, me and my family were talking about it about a week ago where we stand with everything. I kind of told them it might happen and they were behind me on it.”

On his emotions and excitement following his decision to commit:

“It feels great. I’m excited. I kind of want it to come quicker, but I have some business to finish at high school. It also feel like a lot of weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I can just focus on my high school team now. It feels great, it really does.”

On the atmosphere Saturday night in Assembly Hall:

“It’s unlike any other basketball game I’ve ever been to. It’s a great place to play and I can’t wait to play there.”

JIM FISCHER

On the atmosphere in Assembly Hall last night:

“The atmosphere was unbelievable. From the minute we walked in and the crowd wasn’t huge yet, you could just feel the intensity already. The fans are probably the best of the country. We just had a blast last night.”

On how long Luke has followed Tom Crean dating back to the Marquette days and his role in committing to Indiana:

“Obviously he played a huge role. Luke went to his camps in fifth or sixth grade. He’d go down to Marquette, spend a day or a couple days during a camp. Coach Crean remembers him from back then. Not that he’s been following him since then, but he knew who Luke was and when Luke got onto the scene, he started recruiting him. That’s pretty much the history with Crean.”

On how seeing Cody Zeller excel at Indiana played into Luke’s decision and potentially filling that role one day:

“It was a huge part of the decision. Whether or not Luke gets the opportunity to play with him, which I hope he does, that’s exciting. If he ends up, I don’t want to say replacing him because I don’t think he can replace a Cody Zeller, but if Cody decides to stay and Luke can fill in while he’s still there and help out and then Luke can take over, that would be great. I just think Luke is going into a great situation right now. Obviously Indiana’s on the rise and Coach Crean has the team where he wants them to be. We just feel like it’s a great situation.”

The 6-foot-7 Zeigler, a wing forward ranked among the top 40 prospects in his class by Scout.com, sat behind the bench and had a close look at Christian Watford’s game winner from the left wing.

“I was right behind the bench. I couldn’t believe he hit it,” Zeigler said. “I see buzzer beaters on TV, but I was right there and I was able to see it. It was unbelievable.”

After the shot went in, chaos ensued on Branch McCracken Court as students stormed the floor.

Zeigler described the postgame scene: “I almost got ran over, knocked down,” he laughed. “Fans everywhere, running, screaming, yelling.”

With a little less than a year until he can sign a National Letter of Intent, Zeigler is still considering several schools including Florida, Georgetown, Iowa State, Michigan, Michigan State, Providence and Xavier.

“I think my recruitment is still wide open. I don’t want to make a decision too fast,” he said. “I’m still going to think it through. But they [Indiana] made a tough argument with that game.”

Q & A: Trey Lyles after Tech-Pike scrimmage http://www.insidethehall.com/2011/11/18/q-a-trey-lyles-after-tech-pike-scrimmage/ http://www.insidethehall.com/2011/11/18/q-a-trey-lyles-after-tech-pike-scrimmage/#comments Fri, 18 Nov 2011 15:01:15 +0000 Joe Eberhardt http://www.insidethehall.com/?p=16168 Inside the Hall caught up with 2014 IU commitment and Arsenal Tech forward Trey Lyles on Thursday evening after the Titans’ scrimmage at Indianapolis Pike. Indiana coach Tom Crean was in attendance.

A transcript of our conversation with the five-star forward follows:

Inside the Hall: Talk about how it feels to get back out here on the court playing competitive basketball.

Trey Lyles: It’s good getting back out here with the guys. We’re going hard every day in practice, really getting ready for the games and everything leading into sectional. Hopefully we’ll get a sectional championship this year.

ITH: What did you see on the court tonight from yourself and from your team?

TL: Just everybody playing hard. Everybody playing clean basketball and everybody trying to understand what’s going on and getting to know everybody’s games.

ITH: What are some things that Tech as a team and you personally would like to improve on these next couple of days before the season starts?

TL: Everybody just getting more vocal on the court. All of us being able to talk and communicate.

ITH: What have you been doing personally from AAU until now to get ready for the season?

TL: Mainly lifting weights and hitting the gym. I’m getting a lot of shots up, trying to improve my whole game and get stronger.

ITH: What are you weighing in at now?

TL: 235.

ITH: How tall are you now?

TL: 6-10.

ITH: Coach Crean was here. What advice has he given you about improving your game as a player?

TL: Just to get low with the ball, get my shoulder down and explode when I have the ball.

ITH: What do you feel you know a year later as a sophomore that you didn’t know last year as a freshman?

TL: Just going out there and playing hard every play. You can’t take a play off. It’s 4A basketball, the highest basketball in the state. Everybody is good so you have to play every play.

ITH: Are there any games you’ve circled on the calendar that you’re looking forward to?

TL: Broad Ripple (Feb. 17) and Bishop Luers (Feb. 4).

ITH: What is it about those games that excites you?

TL: Broad Ripple because it’s kind of our rivalry game and we’re going up against Ron Patterson. And Luers, that’s James Blackmon.

Tom Crean comments on 2012 recruiting class http://www.insidethehall.com/2011/11/10/tom-crean-comments-on-2012-recruiting-class/ http://www.insidethehall.com/2011/11/10/tom-crean-comments-on-2012-recruiting-class/#comments Thu, 10 Nov 2011 19:59:01 +0000 Staff http://www.insidethehall.com/?p=15924 We’ll have more on this later, but here’s a comment from Tom Crean on the 2012 recruiting class as a whole and each of the signees via IUHoosiers.com:

IU Coach Tom Crean on the class

“We believe this is a class that has an opportunity to develop into a very special group. They are dynamic competitors who bring explosiveness and energy immediately to the program. It will be exciting to help them develop and mesh over time.

“These young men are being coached and raised the right way. They have outstanding people helping them grow and when they get here, we will surround them with a group of coaches, staff and players that will hold them accountable to their respective talents.

“Even though our teams haven’t been where we want them to be yet, this shows again, our program is in a great place.”

Crean on Yogi Ferrell

“Yogi is a great floor leader who has the ability to make others better and get his own shot. He has outstanding quickness, court vision and has great range and can drive with the best of them. More than anything, he is a proven year-round winner. His change of speed and his change of direction are unique for his age. ”

Crean on Jeremy Hollowell

“Jeremy is an extremely versatile player who can score in a variety of ways. He can catch and shoot, take you off the dribble or post you up. He can matchup up defensively with a multitude of players and will give us a number of options when he is on the floor. He loves to be in the gym and his feel for the game is special.”

Crean on Peter Jurkin

“Peter can be a game-changer with his length defensively and he has great timing which is essential for someone who blocks shots. His offense is continuing to evolve and he can play with his back to the basket and is getting more and more comfortable stepping out on the floor to shoot the ball. His progress has been somewhat stalled due to injury, but the potential is there for him to take a big jump this year.”

Crean on Hanner Mosquera-Perea

“Hanner is one of the premiere athletes in the nation and his explosiveness is off the charts. His offensive game is continuing to develop and he is a strong rebounder who also can intimidate with his length on the defensive end. His work ethic is allowing him to become an effective inside/outside player. He plays with an edge that will be very welcome to the program.”

Crean on Ron Patterson

“Ron is a high-energy, defensive-minded player who also can really score. He can stretch the defense and beat you off the dribble. He has a +12 wingspan which gives him a tremendous advantage when it comes to his ability to defense a number of positions. He is working hard to build his range and we feel he will be a very good shooter as well as scorer.”

Gary Harris headed to Michigan State http://www.insidethehall.com/2011/11/09/report-gary-harris-headed-to-michigan-state/ http://www.insidethehall.com/2011/11/09/report-gary-harris-headed-to-michigan-state/#comments Thu, 10 Nov 2011 00:41:55 +0000 Alex Bozich http://www.insidethehall.com/?p=15888 Both Brian Snow of Scout.com and Dave Telep of ESPN.com are reporting that Gary Harris of Hamilton Southeastern has committed to Michigan State.

Harris told Telep that the family atmosphere at Michigan State was the difference:

“Me and my family, we just decided tonight,” Harris said. “All the schools had the same thing but it came down to the school I was most comfortable with. The family atmosphere (at Michigan State) was like no other. The way they treat each other and act and get along — it’s a great feeling.”

A third source — Kyle Neddenriep of The Indianapolis Star — confirmed the news with Gary Harris Sr.

“I absolutely think he did it the right way,” Harris Sr. said. “I’m really happy for him. There’s a range of emotions you go through after going through it for three-and-a-half years. It wasn’t an easy decision.”

Harris, the No. 10 player in the country according to ESPN, took official visits to Indiana, Kentucky, Purdue and Michigan State before ultimately deciding on the Spartans.

He averaged 18.6 points per game as a junior.

Harris’ decision means that Indiana’s 2012 class, ranked as high as No. 2 nationally, will remain at five players.

All five recruits — Hanner Perea, Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell, Jeremy Hollowell, Peter Jurkin and Ron Patterson — signed National Letters of Intent on Wednesday with the Hoosiers.
