Hoosiers hit stride in 2nd half, hammer TCU

by in Recaps | December 10th, 2008

After leading by just four at halftime, Indiana played its best 20 minutes of the season Wednesday night en route to a 66-56 win over Texas Christian at Assembly Hall.

A 9-0 run, capped by a Nick Williams layup with 8:55 remaining, pushed the Hoosier lead to 51-33. Indiana (5-4) led by as many as 23 before TCU closed the game with a 12-0 run of its own.

Devan Dumes scored 20 points to lead IU and Tom Pritchard had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Nick Williams added 11 points and Daniel Moore dished out seven assists.

The Hoosiers forced 21 turnovers, had 11 steals, hit 16 of 20 free throws and out-rebounded TCU 31-25.

Zvonko Buljan paced the Horned Frogs (7-4) with 19 points. The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for TCU, its longest since the 1998-1999 season.

Unbeaten at home: The Hoosiers improved their home record to 4-0.

Still no Jones: Verdell Jones III missed his third consecutive game with concussion-like symptoms following a collision in the Cornell game. Jones is considered day-to-day.

Up next: The Hoosiers return to action Saturday at 4PM against Kentucky in Rupp Arena. The game will be televised by CBS.

Early second half run pushes Zags past IU

by in Recaps | December 6th, 2008

For a half, it appeared that Indiana just might have a shot to do the unthinkable — knock off a top 5 team in the first game ever played at Lucas Oil Stadium.

The Hoosiers came into Saturday a 23-point underdog to No. 5 Gonzaga and trailed by just five points at halftime. And that was after Tom Crean’s club committed 13 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes.

Unfortunately for Crean and IU, the second half started with much of the same as the Hoosiers committed six turnovers in the first five minutes and the Zags used a 9-2 run on their way to a 70-54 victory.

In all, Indiana committed 25 turnovers and it was the sixth time in eight games they’ve totaled more than 20.

Josh Heytvelt scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds for Gonzaga (6-0) and guards Jeremy Pargo and Matt Bouldin added 13 points each.

For the Hoosiers (4-4), it was much of the same when facing elite competition. IU managed just 30 percent shooting from the field and struggled to find their rhythm offensively against a physically superior team.

Devan Dumes led the way with 15 points, but shot just 4 of 15 from the field. Malik Story came off the bench to score 14 and Tom Pritchard chipped in 13.

Verdell Jones III missed his second consecutive game following a collision back on November 30 in the Cornell game. The freshman guard is listed as day-to-day.

Up next: The Hoosiers return to Assembly Hall to face TCU on Wednesday evening.

Hoosiers not up to the challenge at Wake

by in Recaps | December 3rd, 2008

James Johnson scored 21 points and No. 15 Wake Forest shot 62 percent in route to a 83-55 win over Indiana Wednesday night in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.

The Hoosiers (4-3) committed 20 or more turnovers for the fifth time this season and shot just 37 percent from the field and 54 percent from the foul line.

“I think 26 turnovers tells the story,” Tom Crean told reporters after the game.

Three other players besides Johnson scored in double figures for the Demon Deacons (7-0). L.D. Williams had 16, Indianapolis Pike product Jeff Teague had 14, all in the second half, and freshman sensation Al-Farouq Aminu chipped in 12.

Matt Roth was the lone bright spot for Indiana on offense. The freshman guard had 12 points on 4 of 5 shooting. Tom Pritchard struggled against the athletic frontcourt of Wake Forest and scored just four points in 29 minutes.

The win moved Wake Forest to 8-1 all-time in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge and dropped Indiana to 3-5 in the event.

Indiana will return to action on Saturday against Gonzaga at Lucas Oil Stadium. The game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network at 1:30 EST.

Pair of freshmen lead IU past Cornell, 72-57

by in Recaps | November 30th, 2008

Tom Pritchard scored a career-high 23 points and Nick Williams added 18 to lead Indiana past Cornell 72-57 Sunday afternoon in Assembly Hall.

The win was the second straight for the Hoosiers (4-2) and improved their home record to 3-0.

Indiana shot 55 percent from the field, 79 percent from the foul line and limited Cornell to 32 percent shooting.

After Cornell closed the IU lead to four at 49-45 on a layup by Jeff Foote, Indiana reeled off a 13-3 run to put the Big Red (3-3) away.

Ryan Wittman, the son of former IU standout and Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Randy Wittman, led Cornell with 28 points.

Scary moment: Indiana freshman guard Verdell Jones III left the game on a stretcher in the first half after running blindly into a screen set by Foote. According to a report by the Big Ten Network, Jones III’s injury is not believed to be serious.

Up next: Indiana will return to action Wednesday at Wake Forest in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. The game will be televised on ESPN at 7:15 EST.

Turnovers, Govens doom Hoosiers in 80-54 loss

by in Recaps | November 25th, 2008

After trailing by just five at halftime, Indiana couldn’t withstand a 19-0 run early in the second half and fell to St. Joseph’s 80-54 Tuesday afternoon in the Maui Invitational.

After IU got within one at 34-33 with 18:05 remaining on a Tom Pritchard dunk, the Hawks (2-2) reeled off 19 straight points fueled by seven Hoosier turnovers. In all, IU committed 23 turnovers.

Darrin Govins scored 23 points to lead St. Joseph’s. Govins hit his first six 3-point attempts and finished 7 of 9 from behind the arc.

Three other Hawks scored in double figures: Ahmad Nivins (18), Garrett Williamson (11) and Tasheed Carr (10).

The Hoosiers (2-2) shot just 37 percent from the field, 65 percent from the foul line and failed to have a scorer reach double figures for the first time this season.

Jackson and McAlarney lead ND past IU, 88-50

by in Recaps | November 24th, 2008

Indiana got its first taste of a nationally ranked opponent Monday night in the opening round of the Maui Invitational. The result? An 88-50 throttling at the hands of No. 9 Notre Dame.

The Fighting Irish (3-0) shot 51 percent, hit ten 3-pointers, out-rebounded IU 40-23 and forced 20 turnovers.

Tory Jackson paced the winners with 21 points and Kyle McAlarney scored 18. Reigning Big East Player of the Year Luke Harangody added 14.

Mike Brey’s club opened a 13-point lead on a 3-pointer by McAlarney with 6:02 remaining in the first half and the Hoosiers (2-1) could not recover after that point.

Tom Pritchard continued his stellar early season play with 14 points and six rebounds. Two other Hoosiers — Devan Dumes and Nick Williams — hit double figures with 10 points each.

Indiana will continue play in the Maui Invitational Tuesday afternoon against St. Joseph’s. That game will be televised at 1:30 EST on ESPNU.
