Know Thy Opponent: Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

by in Opponents | November 27th, 2007

gatech.jpgThe Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets will make their first trip to Assembly Hall tonight to take on the No. 15 Hoosiers in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

Tech is 3-2 on the season and is coming off a third place finish in the Paradise Jam in the Virgin Islands. Tech’s losses came at home to UNC Greensboro and to Winthrop in the Paradise Jam.

The meeting will be the second all-time between the schools. Indiana beat Georgia Tech 87-65 on December 29, 1969 in the Bruin Classic at UCLA. Georgia Tech is 4-4 all-time in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge and IU is 2-4.

Georgia Tech is expected to be a middle of the pack team in the ACC this season, evident by the media’s selection of the Yellow Jackets to finish seventh in the conference in a preseason poll.

They finished 20-12 a season ago and lost their two best players, Thaddeus Young (Philadelphia 76ers, 12th pick) and Javaris Crittenton (Los Angeles Lakers, 19th pick), to the NBA.

6-5 guard Anthony Morrow is the go-to-guy for Paul Hewitt’s team. The senior guard from Charlotte, NC is averaging 19.0 ppg and has hit a three-pointer in fourteen straight games dating back to last season.

Alade Aminu anchors the frontcourt for the Yellow Jackets. The 6-10 junior from Stone Mountain, GA is averaging 14.0 ppg and 6.8 rpg. Tech has two other players averaging in double figures: forward Jeremis Smith (12.2) and guard Lewis Clinch (11.0).

Two players will return from injury for Hewitt’s club: 6-8 sophomore Zack Peacock will see his first action of the season after missing the first five games with a stress reaction in his right foot and 6-1 freshman Moe Miller will also return. Miller started the first two games at point guard, but missed the Paradise Jam after bruising a bone in his lower back.

Know Thy Opponent: Xavier Musketeers

by in Opponents | November 24th, 2007

th_23666_knowthyopponent_122_866lo.jpgThe Hoosiers will wrap up the Chicago Invitational Challenge tonight against Xavier of the Atlantic 10 Conference.

The Musketeers are 3-1 on the season with their only loss coming at Miami (OH) 59-57 back on Nov. 13. The Hoosiers lead the all-time series 8-0.

Xavier advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament a season ago and lost three seniors, but many publications thought highly enough of the Musketeers to include them in their preseason rankings.

Jeff Goodman of Fox Sports had them at No. 20, Andy Katz of ESPN ranked them No. 22 and the Sporting News pegged them at No. 25.

Head coach Sean Miller will rely heavily on his senior backcourt of Drew Lavender and Stanley Burrell. The 5-7 Lavender is a first team preseason All-Atlantic 10 selection. Burrell, a 6-3 guard, entered the season 25th on Xavier’s all-time scoring list and was a third team All-Atlantic 10 preseason selection.

Up front, 6-9 senior Josh Duncan returns from an injury that forced him out of starting lineup late last season. Duncan is leading the Musketeers in scoring at 13.0 ppg. 6-8 sophomore Derrick Brown joins Duncan in the paint and is the leading rebounder (7.0 rpg) and second leading scorer (12.5 ppg).

C.J. Anderson and B.J. Raymond (both 12.3 ppg) are also keys to the Xavier attack. In all, six Musketeers are scoring in double figures.

th_23666_knowthyopponent_122_866lo.jpgThe Hoosiers will continue play in the Chicago Invitational Challenge tonight against the UNC Wilmington Seahawks. Indiana is 2-0 all-time against UNC-Wilmington and beat the Seahawks 76-67 on the road to the Final Four back in 2002.

Know Thy Opponent: Chattanooga Mocs

by in Opponents | November 11th, 2007

th_23666_knowthyopponent_122_866lo.jpgThe Hoosiers open the season Monday evening at Assembly Hall against the Chattanooga Mocs. Led by fourth-year coach John Shulman, the Mocs return two starters from last season’s 15-18 team.

Chattanooga is a member of the Southern Conference and they’re picked to finish fourth in the North division of that conference. Western Carolina, another IU non-conference opponent, was picked as the third place team in the North division.

Nicchaeus Doaks averaged 10.2 points per game a season ago and figures to be the go-to-guy for Chattanooga. Their other returning starter is Khalil Hartwell, a 6-8 forward who averaged 4.8 points and 4.5 rebounds last season.

Stephen McDowell, a 5-11 point guard transfer from South Carolina, is their top newcomer. McDowell is an Indianapolis native who started his prep career at Lawrence North before transferring to Cedar Grove in Georgia for his final two seasons. McDowell then attended the IMG Basketball Academy prep school before attending South Carolina.

Other notable newcomers to keep an eye on: swingman Kevin Goffney, point guard Keyron Sheard and center Qavotstaraj Waddell.

Chattanooga’s last NCAA Tournament appearance was in 2005. The 15th-seeded Mocs fell 70-54 to Wake Forest in the first round. Chattanooga is 3-9 all-time in the Big Dance.
