Crean: ‘It’s a big deal to have this day’

by in Media | March 11th, 2012

Verdell Jones had waited four years for this moment.

As Indiana was about to be selected to its first NCAA tournament in the Tom Crean era, Jones was all smiles. The senior guard sat in the front row of chairs surrounding the projection screen in the Memorial Stadium’s Henke Hall of Champions, celebrating with teammates that are about to experience something he never will.

Jones won’t get to play in the Big Dance because of a torn ACL injury he suffered against Penn State in last week’s Big Ten Tournament. If he’s feeling sorry for himself, though, he sure isn’t showing it. Jones knows what this moment means for the program and, even though he won’t get to play, he understands the role he’s played in getting Indiana back where it belongs.

“It’s definitely bittersweet,” Jones said. “I’m happy for our team and all we accomplished to get to this point, but at the same time my heart’s a little saddened because I won’t get to participate in it.”

Jones will be with the team when the 4-seeded Hoosiers travel to Portland to play No. 13 seed New Mexico State on Thursday at approximately 9:45 ET. Most prognosticators had the Hoosiers as a 4-seed, so Indiana coach Tom Crean and his players weren’t overly surprised by the announcement.

Before the season started, the announcement would have been much more surprising. Few projected the Hoosiers to even make the tournament, much less as a top 4 seed.

After a three-year hiatus, Crean said it’s special to get back to the postseason.

“It’s a big deal to have this day,” he said. “When you coach and when you come into Indiana, this day is a really important day but a day everybody got used to. My family got used to this day. And then this day goes away for different reasons, and you can’t ever lose belief that you’re gonna get back to it. We never did.”

IU can’t capture momentum in 10th straight loss to Badgers

by in Media | March 9th, 2012

Indiana rode the momentum of a five-game winning streak into Friday’s Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal meeting with Wisconsin.

But after claiming a 13-11 lead early in the first half, it was the Badgers (24-8) who captured momentum and rode unheralded senior guard Rob Wilson to a 79-71 win.

The Hoosiers, who trailed just 36-31 at halftime despite allowing Wisconsin to hit 7-of-15 from behind the 3-point line, trimmed the lead to one twice after the half.

Each time Wisconsin quickly extended the lead back out and took the pro-IU crowd out of the game.

“It’s a game we could have won and should have won, but we could never get over that hump,” Indiana forward Derek Elston said. “We were begging for the crowd to help us out. We had them on our side, we keep getting it down to three, two, one, and we just couldn’t get over the hump. It’s pretty frustrating.”

When the final buzzer sounded on IU’s brief run in the Big Ten Tournament, they’d given up a season-high 13 makes from behind the 3-point line.

Much of the damage was done by Wilson, who finished with a career-high 30 points which came on a mix of uncontested looks and tough shots after he established a rhythm.

“He was just feeling it tonight. He was hitting tough shots, he was hitting wide open shots,” Indiana guard Victor Oladipo said. “It just seemed like every time we would get it close, they would hit a big one.”

Sophomore Will Sheehey blamed many of the openings on the perimeter on poor weak side defense.

Jones has torn ACL, out for season

by in Media | March 9th, 2012

According to IU Media Relations, Tom Crean has announced Verdell Jones suffered a torn ACL in his right knee during Thursday’s win agains Penn State.

Via the release, here’s Crean:

“This is heartbreaking news. His contribution to our program over the course of his career, and especially this season, is immeasurable. He was playing his best basketball and really had embraced his role on this team as a player and as a leader. We are proud of the career he has had at Indiana University and he, as much as anyone, deserved the opportunity to enjoy everything we have worked so hard for and are experiencing as a team. We appreciate all the prayers that have been said on his behalf.”

Such news would seem to indicate Jones will be unable to play the rest of the way for Indiana.
