Highlights from Sampson’s Thursday presser

by in Media | November 1st, 2007

ks.jpgIndiana coach Kelvin Sampson addressed the media today and touched on the team’s exhibition opener this Sunday against North Alabama, the progress of Jordan Crawford and Eli Holman and his outlook for the upcoming season.

We’re having our first live blog/game thread on Sunday for the exhibition opener, so be sure to stop by and drop some comments.

Here is some of what Sampson had to say, courtesy of IU Media Relations:

- On his gut feeling about this season’s team: “I like our team. As long as we keep getting better on defense, I think our team is going to be good. We are going to throw some freshmen out there that are going to make mistakes, but Armon and D.J. have played in the Big Ten. Lance has played in the Big Ten, Mike has played in the Big Ten and so has A.J. Those guys are with our young kids. It’s a really good freshman class. As long as we stay healthy, this team will continue to progress. D.J. and Armon, those two guys, we need them to play good every night. And Eric can score.”

- On Eli Holman, Jordan Crawford and Eric Gordon: “The guy that has really improved in many different areas since we started practice is Eli Holman. He is starting to do some things, instead of thinking about things, going slow and making sure he is doing them right. Eli is so raw, he just isn’t a finished product. But, boy he is going to be good. He has such a high ceiling. Jordan Crawford has such a high ceiling. They are freshman playing in one of the toughest leagues in America and they are going to get beat up at times, but that’s where D.J. (White) and Armon (Bassett) come in. It’s not fair to call Eric (Gordon) a freshman, he’s just a good player. He gets lost a little bit away from the ball, but that will come with experience. His talent can get him out of a lot of problems.”

- On the importance of the next 11 days leading up to the season opener: “Really important. I think our biggest improvement will come between Nov. 5th through Nov. 9th. Those days will be very important for this team. One of my former assistants is actually the coach for North Alabama. He will bring a good team in here. Our kids will be hungry to play.”

Dan Dakich officially joins IU coaching staff

by in Media | November 1st, 2007

Bloomington, Indiana – Indiana Men’s Basketball Coach Kelvin Sampson announced today Director of Basketball Operations Dan Dakich will return to the bench as an assistant coach for the Hoosiers.

“Dan is someone who can do a lot of things to help our program,” Sampson said. “He has been a tremendous asset to our staff and he offers a true sense of what it means to be a part of the Indiana basketball family.”

The Indiana native began a 16-year association with the IU program in the fall of 1981 after graduating from Andrean High School in Merrillville. He played for the Hoosiers from 1982-85 and was a team captain during his junior and senior seasons as the Hoosiers finished with an 84-39 record during his career. As a player, he helped Indiana win one Big Ten title, earn three NCAA Tournament berths and finish as the NIT runner-up his senior season. Dakich also spent 12 seasons on the IU coaching staff from 1985-97. Dakich helped the Indiana program win 73.7 percent (283-101) of its games over the 12 years he served as an assistant coach while the Hoosiers were winning over 70 percent of their Big Ten contests. He was a graduate assistant from 1985-87 before being named full-time prior to the 1987-88 campaign.

Prior to returning to IU, he spent 10 seasons as the head coach at Bowling Green State University and posted the third most wins in school history with 156. Along with fellow assistants Ray McCallum and Jeff Meyer, the Hoosiers have a combined 37 years of Division I head coaching experience among the group working with Sampson who is in his 25th year as a head coach.

From IU Media Relations:

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The Indiana University Department of Athletics today announced its release of all documents relating to its discovery and subsequent investigation, and self-disclosure of recruiting violations and issues with the sanctions involving the men’s basketball coaching staff.

Report: Rob Senderoff will resign

by in Media | October 29th, 2007

robsenderoff.jpgAccording to Jeff Goodman of Fox Sports, Indiana assistant coach Rob Senderoff will resign from his post as an assistant coach.

This would explain Senderoff’s absence from Friday’s open practice as well as Kelvin Sampson’s unwillingness to discuss Senderoff at Sunday’s Big Ten media day.

Indiana assistant coach Rob Senderoff will resign Monday in the wake of the recent phone scandal involving the Hoosiers, according to two sources close to the program.

Senderoff has become the “fall guy” for Indiana head coach Kelvin Sampson, who came to Bloomington and was immediately hit with NCAA sanctions back from his days at Oklahoma.

Before coaching at IU, Senderoff worked at Towson, Yale, Fordham, Miami (OH) and Kent State. He was generally recognized as one of the top upcoming names in coaching and was the main recruiter for Coach Sampson. He is believed to be a primary reason the Hoosiers landed New York area recruit Devin Ebanks.

No official word yet from Indiana on the resignation, but speculation has already begun that Dan Dakich will move from the Director of Basketball Operations post to Senderoff’s vacated spot.

Live report from IU’s open practice

by in Media | October 28th, 2007

thehall.jpgYesterday, Big A solicited a request for any details surrounding Friday’s open practice to those in attendance. Ask and you shall receive.

ITH reader Tim threw down a solid report in the comment section of the aforementioned post and we thought it would be a good idea to highlight it. So, here it is for each and every one of you out there.

I went to the the open practice on Friday, the drills were nothing interesting but the team scrimmaged for over a half hour. It confirmed some things we already knew, like DJ and EJ are awesome. The starting five for crimson was DJ, EJ, Armon, Lance, and JaMarcus so read whatever you want into that. They pulled out to a big lead before they switched the teams up and the DJ led white team made it closer.

I gathered that there is a quite clear first seven with the starting five and DeAndre and Jordan being the first two subs. Eric looked just amazing, his three pointers are frickin beautiful and he had some drives to the basket where he made it look like he was on an empty court. DJ’s play and especially energy was great, since he will probably take his energy level up a notch in real games, he might be unstoppable. In other good news, Lance hit some threes, Armon played well, and JaMarcus made some great plays.

Spartans picked to win Big Ten by media

by in Media | October 28th, 2007

Drew NeitzelBig Ten media day is this afternoon in Chicago and the Big Ten announced the following this morning:

Michigan State has been selected as the preseason Big Ten favorite for the 2007-08 men’s basketball season, as voted upon by a 22-member media panel. Indiana and defending Big Ten Champion Ohio State are ranked second and third, respectively. In addition, Michigan State guard Drew Neitzel was named the Preseason Player of the Year and was joined on the Preseason All-Big Ten Team by Illinois’ Shaun Pruitt, Indiana’s D.J. White, Ohio State’s Jamar Butler and Penn State’s Geary Claxton.

The preseason All-Big Ten team that I did over the summer was nearly identical to the one selected by the media. The only difference was that I had Raymar Morgan in place of Pruitt. I also had Neitzel as the player of the year with D.J. a close second.

As far as the order of finish in the conference, you can make a case for Michigan State or Indiana. Everyone else is playing for third.

Steve Grinczel, a Michigan State beat writer, gave us an excellent breakdown of the Spartans a few months back. If, and it’s a big if, Tom Izzo can find consistency in the frontcourt, I would also give the nod to Neitzel and Co. However, considering the options up front are Goran Suton, Marquise Gray, Drew Naymick, Idong Ibok and Tom Herzog, I would say consistency from that group is a longshot. Gray is an effective player when his head is in the game and the rest of the gang is relatively unproven (or not any good) sans Suton.

So, who do you have to win the conference? Player of the year? Surprise team? Coach of the year? Newcomer of the year? Let’s hear your thoughts.
