Bud Mackey is a free man (for now); Jordan Crawford down to five schools

by in Former Hoosiers | July 3rd, 2008

mackey12.jpgBud Mackey, who lost his opportunity to attend IU after being caught at school with crack, is a free man once again. WKYT in Lexington, Kentucky reports that Mackey was released at 12:01 a.m. on Thursday:

Former Scott County High School basketball star Bud Mackey is out jail, but not out of trouble. Workers at the Scott County Jail say Mackey was released at 12:01 a.m. Thursday.

He served 60 days for violating his bond. He’s been in trouble since being arrested on drug charges.

A judge says Mackey must now live with his grandfather in Lexington and get a full-time job or work toward his GED. His trial on drug charges begins in August.

The most unbelievable part of the whole story is that Mackey’s name still comes up as one of the “best available” players remaining on the board for 2008 by a couple different recruiting services. I put Mackey’s chances of ever suiting up at a legitimate DI school at less than 50 percent.

Switching gears a bit, Jordan Crawford has narrowed his list of schools to five and Kentucky isn’t among the finalists. Jerry Tipton of The Lexington Herald Leader has the details:

Jordan is considering Xavier, Cincinnati, Texas, Oklahoma and Central Michigan. He’s ”leaning more than heavily“ toward one of those schools, his mother Sylvia said.

The school that Mrs. Crawford is referring to is Xavier, reportedly the second choice for Crawford when he picked Indiana in November of 2006. He’s expected to make his decision sometime this weekend.

Robert Vaden arrested for disorderly conduct

by in Former Hoosiers | September 1st, 2007

Robert VadenIn case you were wondering how Indianapolis Pike product and former Hoosier Robert Vaden is doing these days, the Birmingham News has an update for you:

Five UAB Blazer basketball players were arrested and jailed early Friday morning by Birmingham police.

Edward Berrios, 23; Keenan Ellis, 18; Walter Sharpe, 21; Channing Toney, 21; and Robert Vaden, 22, were all booked into the Birmingham City Jail between 2:45 and 3:30 a.m.

The incident leading to the arrest of the players started inside Club Red, 2015 Highland Avenue, about 1:30 a.m. when some players began arguing and fighting among themselves, said Sgt. Paul Irwin of Birmingham’s South Precinct. Off-duty officers working at the club called for backup and several Birmingham police cars were dispatched, he said.

“It was out of hand,” Irwin said of the incident.

The arguing and yelling eventually spilled outside the club where the players refused to cooperate with police, Irwin said.

“There were several other basketball players there who were tying to calm their teammates as well,” he said.

The players continued to be loud and boisterous, and were even screaming profanities, Irwin said. Finally, police were forced to arrest the players who refused to cooperate and continued yelling at both police and people on the street.

Ellis tried fleeing but was captured by police. An officer was injured during the chase, Irwin said.

So yeah, things seem to be going well down at UAB for Vaden and Coach Mike Davis.  I’m not one to sit here and rip away at college kids, but there’s really no excuse for something like this. It’s just flat out unacceptable. It’ll be interesting to see how things turn out over the next two seasons for Vaden and how this arrest will effect him on the court, if at all.

Also, will Davis get control of his players before the season starts? If not, it could be a long year for Blazer nation.

Wilmont, Calloway land in NBA Summer League

by in Former Hoosiers | July 6th, 2007

earl.jpgThere weren’t two guys on last year’s Hoosier team with more charisma than Rod Wilmont and Earl Calloway. (Mike White was a close third. Wink.) They were flashy; they were fun to watch.

On a given night, Wilmont would transform into a can’t-miss-three-point assassin. Calloway, at his best, could break down a defense with ease. So, I’m glad they’ve both hooked on with NBA Summer League squads — Wilmont with the New York Knicks and Calloway with the Atlanta Hawks.

It’s hard enough making an NBA squad as a second round draft pick — they don’t get guaranteed contracts — so I doubt either of these guys will actually land on their respective team’s roster.

But hey, congrats are in order all the same.

Errek Suhr gets into coaching

by in Former Hoosiers | July 5th, 2007

Errek SuhrLess than four months removed from his playing days at Indiana, Errek Suhr is already back into basketball. Suhr has returned to Bloomington North, where he graduated in 2003, as an assistant coach.

Suhr talked to the Times Mail about the role coach Kelvin Sampson played in preparing Suhr to be a success in coaching:

“He’d just pull me aside during a practice and say, ‘Now this is what you should do when you are a coach,’ ” Suhr said. “He’d just talk to me about all the things you encounter as a coach.”

It’s no surprise to us that Suhr has landed this gig. When he was on the floor with the Hoosiers, he was an extension of the head coach and you could be sure good things were going to happen.

And we have no doubt that Suhr will make a successful coach. Why are we so confident in saying that? If the attitude he showed us over the past four years is any indication, nobody will outwork Errek Suhr.
